Title: Dr. Schechter? (vs. Garramone)
Post by: smearedblackink on October 28, 2011, 07:34:34 PM
Has anyone heard of or had experience with Dr. Loren Schechter in Chicago? I'm planning on getting top surgery next summer and am split between Dr. Garramone and finding someone more local. I was directed to Dr. Schechter through networking with some colleagues, and I trust their judgment almost more than I trust my own, but I'm interested to hear if anyone has any experiences. Thank you!

Hello,

I am also thinking of using Dr. Schechter for my Vaginoplasty. Does anyone have any detailed information about his techniques?

Happy Holidays,

Joanna

I can't find much other than the website for Dr. Schechter, but I've always thought Paul Steinwald in Lake Forest does really good work. If you read his reviews on transbucket, he sounds like a dick, but his results might still make him worth considering.

Having personally had experience with both Dr. Steinwald and Dr. Schechter I definitely preferred Dr. Schechter. In 2013 I had a consult with Steinwald and needless to say his staff was rude, impatient and he didn't really care about the personalization of your care, just get in, get out and don't ask many questions. That's how it was for me at least. With Schechter on the other hand he sat down, spent ten to fifteen minutes answering my mom and I's questions and while I've been getting the financing ready for surgery, his staff has always been ready to answer all questions when I call. Although the price of Schechter is significantly higher than Garramone, at least for my quote it was $9800 as compared to Garramone's rate of $6000, I feel that Schechter is a much better choice for me personally. His wait list is about eight weeks out, and if you're like me and a few hours out from the Chicago area, he'll have you do an overnight stay at the hospital. Which that also attributes to the costs as well. But he'll have you do an overnight, then you can go back home, then in five-six days he'll have you come back for drain removal and whatnot. But if you're closer than I, you more than likely won't have to do an overnight. I'll be getting top surgery from his this summer/fall and I'll be posting my results of double incision. I hope the best of luck to you!

Hi,

Joanna, think you might do better with this question if you ask the gals (MTF forum). There's a surgery forum. I know a lady who went to him and was very happy though. Did NOT ask for details.

Back to comparing Garramone with Schechter, going to be very hard. Schechter has been around a long time, but not really for whatever reason very visible. Where Garramone's name is everywhere. I suppose they both like it that way.

Schechter takes insurance and has always taken insurance, kind of been on the forefront of doing this (also takes Medicare).

BTW, my surgery was about 8 weeks out, so it depends on when you schedule for Garramone. I am pretty sure Schechter is a MUCH nicer guy. I think Garramone is more like $7000 including the day surgery center. I don't think an otherwise healthy person is in any danger getting this done in a day surgery center. Obviously if you have health limitations this would change.

For me, choosing my surgeon was a simple process.

1) decide which surgeon's work you like the best (use transbucket, other social media pictures)
2) determine what percentage of the time these beautiful results occur with this surgeon.  determine how many top surguries the surgeon has actually done (and no, natal male's gynecomastia surgeries don't count!)

Consider another surgeon if you don't feel good about the answers.  Go through the same routine with that surgeon.  Take your time picking the best surgeon for you.
Then:
3) Price taking travel, lodging, food, etc, to determine if your "first pick" surgeon is an option for you.

Time constraints/time frame may be on the list for some folks as well.

You only get to do this once guys.  There is no "do overs"....well, there is, but that is more surgeries!

Make decision based on the above.
