Title: Anyone else find the GBLT acronym annoying?

Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Transgender.
which of these things is not like the other?
give up?
Well if you guessed Transgender, you're right.
Being Gay, Bisexual, or Lesbian (while being completely fine) has to do with your identity as a sexual being in this world.
Being transsexual is bigger than just sexuality, it refers to anything in our society that is determined by the gender binary. This includes so many things which are not sexual in nature.
Why do people classify GBLT like this? Trans is not a determination of sexuality, but a determination of gender identity.
I think that by continuing to group these four together folks will continue to to group transgendered people as sexual deviants (from what is considered the heterosex norm) rather than people born with a birth defect.

Trans needs the work done on equality and anti-discrimination laws more than the GBL part needs us.
Lots of rights battles were lost because of the "T" inclusion. some laws were passed only after the the "T" parts were taken out.
some laws had to be refought (successfully) to add the "T" back in once the wedge had been driven.
One group makes more progress. don't bite the hand protecting your rights.

Heh, I thought this was going to be about how the initials keep getting longer and longer. GLBTQQIAAP+ or some such.
In which case I was going to tout the much more concise GSM: gender and sexual minorities.
But this thread isn't about that...
so...

"T" was placed in LGBT not because of their similarities with sexuality, rather, they were placed into the family because of their similarities with the struggling of equality from those who view us with disdain, confused, perverted, etc.
We were placed into the group under the banner and spirit of unity. Not sexual related unity but under a banner of unity in which everyone should be respected regardless of who we are.
For me, personally, I am perfectly content with the T in LGB

I don't have a problem at all. First I am trans gender. I am bi sexual. As a biological male it makes me in some sense gay and in my soul I would say I'm a lesbian...I like women the most and in a perfect world I would be one and be with one. Maybe we could share a boy toy when we got bored >:-)
I agree with that
And that

Homosexuality is not deviant sexual behaivior.
We need to get that message across.
Not the message that T people need to separate from LGBT due to being seen as deviants like those 'other people'.
So long as T people like myself are willing to volunteer time and money at the local LGBT centers then the T stays firmly attached the the LGB.

I agree! Except i really don't like seeing the word "homosexual" because it is a word used by non-lgbtqia folks to medicalize gay people. Ofcourse, we've done the same by using the term heterosexual for them but either way we still lack of the privilege of being heterosexual so they can suck it.
QuoteGay, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Transgender.More on topic, yes, those are all sexual orientations but they are intricately bound by gender.

Well if you guessed Transgender, you're right.
Also, alot of gays and lesbians don't agree with eachother or disagree with the existence of bisexuality, alot of trans people are homophobic alot of conflict in general, in my opinion.. that makes us even more of a community.
And nowadays, i don't just see being gay as a sexual identity because they are also a community of people who have been oppressed in similar ways we are oppressed. That becomes apart of their language, their behavior, their lifestyles. That type of oppression creates a community(LGBTQIA) that I believe we as marginalized people ourselves should stand by.
Personally, I associate transition in many ways and find myself understanding it for gay people as well. Such as closeted gay people finally having the ability to come out and then making that transition themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically.

The thing is also, that a lot of us are in fact seen as LGB by the outside world even if we don't consider ourselves to be.
For example a MTF that is attracted to men would (as far as I'm concerned) be a straight woman. To the outside world however, you'd basically just be a gay man who dresses like a woman. That's why it's important for us to be with the LGB community. We often need the same rights as they do.

This 100%
Plus, many trans people identify as gay, lesbian, or bi before coming to the decision to transition (I was one of them).
There may be some arguments for division but I think the similarities and common goals for equality far outweigh them.

actually the local GLB community specifically excludes Ts of all varieties. which seems to show they know that GLB are just about sexual orientation and stereotyping.

There are just so many letters, and for the life of me I can never remember the order in which they fall.
Also, I just think the 'B's and 'T's of it all get lost in translation. Transgender's are excluded from things and Bisexuals are just along for the ride.

I think the most awesome one I've actually seen used is Toronto Pride's LGBTTIQQ2SA.

The local LGBT center where I am at is contastantly looking for ways to get the T involved.
Problem is that once folks transition they leave the comunity.

I totally agree with you, Ellen! However, labels can be somewhat beneficial for a couple of reasons, only IMHO...
1) It is good to know that we are not alone in the process of identifying ourselves.
2) Easier to use label when you are trying to search for something, instead of trying to Google, "I am a biological female but I feel like I'm more aligned towards the masculine and I identify more like a man, but I am not sure if I want to change my biological sex."
