A BAHRAIN resident who set up an online portal to support lesbians, gays, people who are bi-sexual and transsexuals has vowed to carry on despite threats to have it closed down.

The website, Ahwaa.org, was launched in the summer to give people across the Middle East a platform to anonymously share their experiences.

Hundreds of people have signed up for the service, but the site developer, who did not wish to be identified, said it had also sparked anger and homophobia from some sections of society.

"One of the many challenges is the fact that this topic is still a taboo that is often met with censorship and that widespread homophobia is the norm in our societies," she said.
