Like, in my avatar. My hair right now is like, way longer than most short haired guys, but still way too short to be considered long, and my head was shaved 11 months ago.

Okay to go from a shaved bald head to mid back took 3 years with many many trims and hairstyles.

Got 6 or 7 inches in 11 months from shaved as well.

I started growing mine in February 2011 and it's down to my neck now. It's about 7 inches long, and I'm hoping to at least double that by next year.

I think it took at least 3 years for me to grow my hair that long, my head wasn't shaved, but I didn't have very long hair before I started to grow it out.

Have you actually been getting trims in between? That makes a huge difference.

Actually nvm I forgot, it's been a bit more than 5 months.

Are you aiming for a hairstyle or just "metal head" hair? Long one length hair is boring and rarely flatters masculine features.

Actually try to grow it into a style. You'll thank me later.

I need to get busy in the style department. My hair is several inches past my shoulders. I think it's taken a little less than a 1.5 years.

At this point I'm still telling people that "I'm growing it out for "locks of love"".

I considered doing that... But men love long hair. I'd love to get a pixie though...just because I can.

Yeah, every 2 months. I have no idea what style I want it in though, I'm just letting it grow out first before I fix it up.

In this image I was 17 soon to turn 18 I WISH my hair was that long now. It's a good 6-7 inches shorter now I can't seem to get it much longer than this now.
I might cut my hair shorter because of that fact :/ As my body dosen't want me to enjoy long hair anymore :(

Shaved my head last I can remember around new years last year, give or take a month. It's just getting to my neck now. **C'mon haairrrrr, gwooow fasssserr**

About a year including trims and hairstyles.

Hair usually grows about half an inch a month. It will enter a stage where it will stop growing and fall out, and another strand will take its place after 2-3 years (however every follicle is different). It's taken me about 14 months to grow my hair out 7-8 inches without cuts or trims. If you're going to grow your hair out, you really want to avoid trimming it. Contrary to popular belief, cutting the ends will not cause your hair to grow faster (but it will make your hair look healthier). I was told yesterday by classmates and my teacher in my cosmetology class that I have a girls haircut. It's shoulder length and in layers.

I've had long hair for a while now (way before I came out) and I believe it's been growing for ~2-2.5 years now. It reaches to the middle of my back right now.
It's still a very plain "heavy metal" hairstyle though, but I'll get it styled and whatnot after New Year when I go raid clothing stores and stuff (because of sales in January :P).

So yeah, it can take a while to grow out your hair long, but short hairstyles in the meantime can work well too. Just need to make sure the style fits your face shape etc.

I'm still growing my hair out.  It has been about 6 months.  I also used to shave my hair to around 1/4 inch long, but that is when I was trying to hide what I am to myself.

I've been growing my hair out since late 2005. It's about mid-back length right now when straightened but I've had a few cuts so I guess that doesn't really count.

I've never shaved my head, I've never had less than an inch of hair. I don't think I'd like the feel of it, especially in winter.

I love the warm feeling my hair gives me on the back of my neck and sides of my head, it's like being enveloped in a blanket. Short hair feels so unnatural to me.

My hair is really thick and looks a lot like the middle photo and its been about2 months from a the cut your currently sporting and might actually be longer if I take some product to it I can make it look like the photo to the left a bit ^^
Though it's not bad I want it to be longer and almost was thinking about getting a pixie cut XD

mine has been growing since august and its 3 1/2 inches maybe 4? and i had it shaved off before i started growing out. i think i want extensions though

It is nearly to the waist but had been cutting it myself keeping any split ends snipped and bangs styled, did cut 6" off early this year. Started growing it out in 2008. Usually have it under a cap and wear it in either an updo or ponytail to keep the neck cool.

  About 2 1/2 years for slightly below mid back length hair.

i need a trim, but grows long enough to donate to locks of love in about 2 years and still have enough to pull back into a tail.

Which was ideal for me since I cannot stand long hair. I go by the addage that long hair doesn't make all trans girls look feminine....some end up looking like a band member from Guns N Roses...I didn't want to chance that.

right now, my hair is an asymmetrical bob that touches my shoulders. i had hair about as short as emma watsons more than a year ago. with lots of trims and even an inch cut off before, i have a neck length haircut. my mom basically quit cutting it a couple months before i graduated hs which was early in 2010. my hair grows fast for the record.

As for me...Just doing side parted bangs with long and short layers. The idea is to look like an extra from the TV show, "Las Vegas"

Hmm... it went from chin length to just past shoulder length over the last 6 months? Feels kinda slow I think but it's probably normal so whatever. Can't remember the last time my hair was short short so that's all I can say  :)

Btw the rule of thumb is 1/2" per month.

do you think all women should get their haircut the same as you? personally, i like my bob with bangs. it's retro, but i'm getting kind of bored and wanna grow it past my shoulders so i could do a side ponytail over a shoulder. i'm keeping the straight bangs though, they work for me.

I've been growing my hair out and cutting it my entire life. It really epitomizes my inner struggle between who I am, and who I needed to pretend I was. I went through a hyper masculine sprint right before I finally broke down and came to terms that I would never outrun this. Also, if you've never showered with a shaved/military cut head, well you're missing out. The convenience of not needing to spend ten minutes rinsing it off, then half an hour drying it with a hair-heat-death-ray-blaster-gun. It really puts long hair into perspective. Then again, 'mones have greatly reduced the oiliness of my hair, so I can get away with only washing it once or twice a week. Lots of conditioning though.

umm I shaved my head down reaaaally short around march and its grown out to the the length you see in my avatar since then
I only got it cut once since then and that was recently.

i think you misunderstood her :)  She was talking about layering long hair and how one she doesn't like the one length long hair that can make you end up looking like a rock band singer.

I agree, my stylist told me to layer my hair too, cause one length hair is not a good way to go. I'm wearing extension now but it comes off a lot. I wish my bangs are longer you know, or at least cover my ears then I don't mind going out with short hair. I don't know, like you said men love girls with long hair, and it's very true in my opinion. That's why I'm not that confident at all to go out with short hair. To me, I think long hair just make you look more feminine and helps hide masculine jawline if you have one, I know I do lol

You do whatever it is you do...

So no, you shouldn't have the same hairstyle as me. People should wear what flatters their face and body and depreciates the masculine features. Hair is not one size fits all.... Especially when you account for different lifestyles.

oh, i see. i flat iron my waves, so i don't have that problem.

   Biotin helps to grow your hair out faster plus it keeps it looking healthy. I should add that drinking lots of water helps your hair big time and not to mention a healthy diet.  ;)

Ah! Never gave much thought to this and, Go Figure, i think you'll find *hair everywhere else* will become much easier to deal with too!

Now, after over six years of meds & hair growth, I think you'll *hopefully* also find that you barely need to shave anywhere at all as well!

I have always had a typical law enforcement/military style flat top with razor fade. I just started growing out my hair in July and its taking forever! Its actually long enough to comb it over now though, but that's still not long enough to style it.  :(  The biggest bummer is I can only grow it up to the top of my shirt collar, per my departments rules and regulations! :( oh well! Guess I'll just have to find a cute feminine short hairstyle. To OP just be patient, it will come soon enough.

I am finally having some luck with my ear canals  ;D

I started growing my hair out at about the age of 19....10 years (OMG)... it was always more along the lines of the metalhead type mop with an undercut. I have given it several big trims over the years and it now comes to the base of my spine, unfortunately with only a few months undercut re-growth. I am psyching myself up for a femenine hairstyle which can be tied back in day to day mode and not give me away until i go full full-time. My first step was dyeing it a very VERY red which has been enough to get me mistaken for a woman even in guy mode... albeit from behind... and at a distance... but it's a start at least. I also use clip in extensions to add layers and bangs when I am out without the male disguise.

any advice on styles?

Last Dec I had about 1" hair. I usually got a "buzz" cut every 6 months or so to keep it short. (It's a "guy" thing for me). Haven't been near a home-cut kit for almost a year...it's about 6" long now.

I'm thinking by spring 2013 (15 months or so) I'll have the length I want. Will be going to a stylist soon, will ask about a "feminine" style/look, including layering.

Wife tells me the "Farrah Fawcett" look is *sooo* outdated...curled bangs, "wings", etc. I have no idea, so will be asking the stylist about what looks good on me (re: as a woman, height, face shape, etc)

unfortunatly it doesn't make me look feminine or like a hot lez!  Just makes me look masculine :(
