Title: Altering Clothes... Just Starting...
Post by: Maya Zimmerman on November 09, 2011, 03:18:20 PM
So, I sewed up a men's button down shirt of mine the other day to give it a more feminine shape.  Since the buttons are on the wrong side, it still doesn't count as a women's blouse and the angles are sharp, not like the patterns I've seen for women's clothing like this.  So, I guess it's kind of an androgynous cut?  I was blatantly inspired by King of Fighters, as I was considering dressing as King for Halloween (if that seems like too many genders within genders, imagine if I went as Ash Crimson... which I would totally do).  I guess my brain going into cosplay mode just registered that I used to change aspects of my existent clothes to fit very different looks.

Anyway, I messed up terribly, pulling it in 8 inches too tight in the waist, which other measurements were based on (not that it matters when the waist is 8 inches too tight 0_0), so I had to remove the stitching for the whole thing.  Luckily, I'm pretty terrible at hand-sewing and was just getting an idea of how it looked before running it through the sewing machine, so lacking a seam ripper was a bit of a nonissue; just pulled the seam apart a little slowly after cutting it in a couple of spots.

For the most part, I really like the way it was turning out and I wonder if anyone would be interested in my making a tutorial when I get it down.  Like I said initially, this isn't for making "women's" clothing, so I don't know how many people would be into it...  It's still a lot more feminine than a traditional men's button-down and might be a good thing for people who can't afford new clothes (here) or people who might be shy about going shopping early in transition.
