Title: being androgynous and HRT
Post by: beyondlabels on November 12, 2011, 02:09:06 AM
Is it possible to be androgynous and transition because you prefer the body of the opposite gender? How many of you have done/planned to do so? Are therapists willing to give HRT in that cases?

There was a thread about this awhile back...

Found it. https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,107997.0.html (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,107997.0.html)

That said, there are a bunch of androgyns around here who take hormones. I'm not one of them, yet. First I need to finance top surgery, which might require selling eggs and thus being on female hormones. But as soon as surgery's paid for, I'll probably be going on T.

Yes androgynes can get HRT.
It might not be easy though to find a psyrink willing to write the letter.

My spouse and I know such a therapist, but if you are not in the Spokane Washington area ....

Aww, I was just thinking of a place in Chicago that prescribes hormones on informed consent.  :(

Some doctors and psychiatrists are open to the reality that physical gender expression and gender identity are not the same thing - you may just have to prepared for more in-depth questioning (I have had to make a clear case for myself, as someone who should have a female body but is more androgynous in gender identity).

This is definitely a possibility. There have been several people who have done it. More than several, I'm sure.

I've known a great deal of people who've done so.
I myself ID as a genderqueer guy, and plan to go on T and get top surgery. The one gender therapist near me said she was very open to nonbinary trans* who're looking to transition, so there are doctors open to it.

I'm a genderqueer guy and only feel comfortable with a more masculine body. In terms of presentation, I'm more flexible. It took me a while to stop cringing when I was immediately perceived as female, though if it took people a while, it was pretty fun to watch them panic because they didn't know what box I fit in. I think I'm just about at the point where I could enjoy the ambiguity again. My therapist was fine with it, but I think it depends on who you see.

There are doc's who will perscribe hormones to people like us and some who won't.  If this is what you need to be true to yourself then keep looking until you find someone who will.  I consider myslf lucky to have found a doc who was willing to perscribe what I needed to move forward fairly quickly I have seen shrinks who have said that Hormones would not be good for me because I'm not binary I don't see those shrinks anymore.  and I'm hapilly changing my body but It is very slow I have some F2M friends who are changing rather quickly but it is slower in the other direction :'(
