An American citizen born to Danish parents, George Jorgensen Jr would return to Denmark to transform into the woman he had always dreamed of being. On 20 May 1926, Jorgensen was born in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. He reported a fairly happy childhood, but hiding just below the surface, he always knew something was different.
