Title: Genitalia!! [your preferred terms: affirming and/or gender neutral]
Post by: Mika on November 19, 2011, 07:28:01 PM
I know how much you like talking about genitalia, so I was wondering what terms you all use for yourselves or any terms you know others prefer.

[Actually, my partner is working on a zine about non-binary identities and bodies, and wants to include more terms than ze already knows]

I'll start to break the ice:

I call it my little guy, dick, dicklit, and microcock.

Genitalia! Go!

The downstairs neighbour. And his two kids.

The accursed thing. That which must not be named. The tentacle monster...

Yay names!

I use terms that are affirming for me, but I don't know any good gender neutral ones. When I want to avoid gendering my genitalia, I tend to get either really medical, roundabout, or silly.

I just call it my dick, or when I am joking around, my wiener lol

and I call the other thing my vag, or pussy, or if I am directing someone to "go in" I just say something like "inside"

Best one I've heard a woman use to describe hers...."cooter".

As in, "My cooter is kinda feisty tonight."

Funny as all get-out to me and my wife.

I refer to my part as "the thing."

As in, "What are we going to do with my thing tonight?"

i usually just call it genitals. i don't have the need to call it anything else usually. i coined the term "clitorenis" though. i like calling mine that, but if i'm trying to be descriptive of my condition to someone else, i say i'm a female born with male genitalia. that comes off as an oxymoron to many, but it's too bad.

Not exactly gender neutral, but I prefer the simple term 'pussy' for my genitalia. My clit is well, my clit. Plain and simple. Everybody knows what I mean and I don't have to explain anything. I'd rather call it what it is. But to each his own.

I tend to be very vague (like "that stuff down there") or use medical terminology if I need to be exact.  I'm hoping I'll be more comfortable with male terms after starting T.

I use pussy too, but more often than not, I use nether region. Sometimes nether lips, but rarely. If they want/need more specific terminology, I usually use medical lingo.

I would think "pussy" comes from the fact that a woman's "muff" area feels the same as a cat's body, in terms of softness and fluffiness. That, and both purr when petted right...

Have no idea about "dick" though...(eta: although my thinking is that it's probably Old English or maybe German verb for "to poke something"...as I said, I do not know, but like to guess. )

i think it has something to do with the penis being like a gun. "cock" sounds to me like it's in reference to a gun. if you look at the side of a penis while erect with the hanging scrotum, it looks alot like a gun. it shoots out, well you know...

For me:
Penis
Weiner
Cock
Dick
Banana Cannon
Etc.

Jay tells me to call his junk the same as a male would(dick)
And I'm completely fine with that.
The other thing is called his "other hole"

Yeah...we dont really have a more sexy name for it just yet xD

For us, "pene" or "pequeño pene" (little penis).
Never use "clitoris", never mention other parts.

My dad refers to a penis as "family jewels" which I always thought was hilarious.

I don't really call it anything though, as I never feel the need to describe it. and when I do I'm as vague as you possibly can be, like "down there" or "in my pants" or something like that.

Sorry and I hope I'm not interrupting, even though I am.

Where do the terms, pussy and dick come from? Balls are pretty obvious. I'm not interested in the offensive terms.

I noticed, when I was in my teens, that other boys tended to think of their parts in reaction to almost any word. Especially a word that was abrupt or a little unusual. When the subject was being discussed and the conversation needed a reference to be made, almost any term for male or female genitals or the sex act itself was understood.

I assume, but I may be wrong, that many of the more popular terms come from that tendency. Khyber pass is an example.

Personally, I like to try to be as matter of fact as I can be, so if I ever do have to make a reference to what is there, I call it the ugly bit. Simply because it is.

But another point here is that this may be a reflection of our obscession with any references. Hence the social disdain for so called swear words.

There are a number of prominant thinkers here in the UK, who want to reintroduce traditional terms into common usage, ->-bleeped-<- for the sex act for example. Others include ->-bleeped-<-, fart, piss and so on.

Steven Fry is perhaps the most significant, though I confess I haven't read his thinking first hand as he seems mostly occupied on tacky game shows and Twitter these days.

They argue that our obscession with these terms comes from the 19th century neurosis. Essentially working people, aquiring huge wealth and seeking to adopt the mannerisms and customs of the upper classes. Since these people rarely ever came into contact with the upper classes, their only significant experiences were very formal and to the point. Such as being sentenced in court.

Stephen Fry is pretty universally disliked by linguists. He kinda rambles and makes stuff up.

For pussy, wikipedia has about as much as we're going to get - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy#Etymology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy#Etymology)

And here, this may not solve anything, but it's fun to read - http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=penis (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=penis)

I tend to say 'penis' when talking about my downstairs. And words like boner if the situation calls for it. But I'm not afraid to say vagina when it's necessary either, doesn't really bug me.

You may be right. It's a sad reality that many who set themselves up as any sort of experts, tend to disdain anyhting that they feel might undermine the attention they think they should enjoy. Hence the attitudes of many in education and medicine toward the internet, for example.

Never the less, whilst Steven Fry is a very populist type, principally known for his somewhat intellectually insulting TV game shows, his attitudes are quite widely listened to.

I find refreshing that someone, in a position, such as his, has come out in support of liberating language.

The beauty of English and the principal reason it is almost universally accepted as lingua franka, is its tolerance of innovation. Other languages, French for example, invariably end up as arguments over pronounciation.

Personally, I take it as ominous that some words are effectively forbidden. Granted, we may not wish to discuss the subject. I cringe when people talk about football, David Beckham, the Olympic Games and so on. But that would seem to be a lame excuse for these words to be forbidden.

I haven't had a television since 99, so I don't honestly have a real grasp of who Fry actually is. I do know that you can be a popularizer for any subject without going on game shows or rubbing all the other experts in your field the wrong way.

I'm not a prescriptivist. The idea of forbidden words sounds silly to me.

Back to the thread topic, a friend of mine refers to the vaginal area as "The Pearl District."

For the most part I use fairly derrogatory names for everything below my collarbone. The garbage in my pants is usually referred to as that (trash, sh*t, f***hole, junk). Occasionally though, in keeping with the Old Gregg references, I'll break out "mangina" 'cause it makes me laugh.

And once or twice, after a healthy dose of Venture Brothers, "The Tingling Nethers".

I usually refer to mine as ''my girl'' or my pussy, hubby refers or prefers pussy, I remember an ex boyfriend many years ago use to call my pussy a ''fanny'' which I didn't like, I think its a derogatory term for a woman's genitalia, when he use to call my pussy a ''fanny'' I founded it very belittling and a little insulting and disrepectful, hubby's anatomy is just a cock, he doesn't like to be called a ''prick'' same as I don't like mine to be called a fanny, just my 2cents.

Not in the UK, over here it's a colloquialism for a vagina. Which may explain some strange looks that US tourists get in the back of taxi cabs.

I don't have any dysphoria surrounding my bits, so I'm not really in need of affirming or gender-neutral language to describe them. That said, I really enjoy calling it my ->-bleeped-<-, or my junk. ->-bleeped-<- especially. Both of those describe the whole area, though, so I use 'clit' or 'vagina' or 'lips' where appropriate.

Oh gosh, Sephirah thats hilarious, thats the best laugh Iv had in a long time, ''strange looks that US tourists get in the back of taxi cabs'' now a person who makes me laugh is super sweet lol.
But back on topic, when my exboyfriend penetrated me with his cock, he use to say, ''sweety you'v a tight fanny'' it wasn't my backside, but my tight pussy, maybe thats why ''fanny'' is offensive and derogatory, getting confused between a vagina and a backside, never like the word or ->-bleeped-<-, its my girl or my pussy.

Interesting.. As far as I knew, fanny was another word for vagina - although I was aware of the different meaning in the US, my peers have always used to refer to a vagina..

I grew up in Melbourne and then moved to Adelaide - I wonder if that makes any difference?

Down below I call my boy parts.   But then I do everything i can to make them insignficant and try and ignore them.   Above I would call boobs if I had any.

Somebody here used the term "giblets" recently and I almost choked. :)

hehe I use that one too  :D

When I was little my mum would refer to it as "tuppence" - I laughed SO HARD the first time I watched Mary Poppins ... "feed the birds, tuppence a bag!"

I was like, what kind of sick exchange is that?!

I tend to be kinda shy about stuff like this and usually say schmekie or if I'm being more serious schmekel.  If it's a medical issue I use medical terms.
