Title: Music making!!!
Post by: Sweet Blue Girl on December 01, 2011, 06:46:19 AM
I want to open this discussion because i am a music maker, not a pro yet, and i play guitar. I would like to meet here people who share the same interest and have will and a little free time to start a collab project, in wich sharing compositions, talents, esecutions...
Obviously the only required thing is time and the ability to record and send music.
Then we could start after some talking on working on pieces togheter adding tracks and so on...
I compose and play guitar but dont sing, these are my skills. I like bpop, lues and grunge and electro music, but i am open also to classical and jazz, and you.?

---
I play piano, keybord, alittle guitar and sing.

I hope one day to play a keytar as well..

I make electronic music on my home pc, i dont have any classical music training though. soundcloud.com/gracie-e if you wanna listen. I would be interested in some sort of collab work but i dunno how usefull i could be. In the past ive also been pretty insistant that anything i release is done so under a non-commercial creative commons agreement but i may be persuaded to waive that insistance if working on a collaboration.

I love to make music! Right now I just do solo stuff (I sing and play piano). I would say I'm inspired mostly by 90s female singer songwriters like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Ani DiFranco, Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morrissette.

If you'd like to check out my stuff feel free: joannaransdell.bandcamp.com

I guess we could need a producer!
I really like your rythmic parts. Wich software you use?

I think that if we put togheter 2 guitars 1 bass 1 or more piano 1 drums 1 music fx ( as you ) 1 lead voice at least 1 back voice and start to share the song we are more proud of, we can do  something really nice.

Step by step anyway, first we talk here then i 'll create a little newsletter where we can share the files needed, I did this before fora song i wrote: it was fun and the result was nice, i'll make you hear it soon.

You have time for a cooperation, and can you make us listen how you play? And what you like.

Heard your youtube sessions.
I confess the songs were too much sad for me :( but I guess it's normal for piano solo. I like the same music U like, so i guess it's the lack of a drum and production, and maybe some more innovative approach.
I don't want to be rough anyway, I guess when i'll make you hear my music you'll think and say even worse, criticism is the way to find solutions and improve I guess.
Basically i wish you take part of this discussion and when we'll be ready we'll start working o the same choosen pieces.
I make you congrats for the look!!! Big congrats !!!

I love making music, however its been a while for me. I would do this with you all, but I've been trying to get back on some music I started a while ago. If you watched my TransByDef vid I made, the beginning had a small snippet I made. It was very rough. I actually do darker toned music then that. I think that piece became lighter toned because I was starting my transition and my mood changed lol.

But if you all continue to do this for a while,i wouldnt mind working on something later. It will be much much later for me.lol.

I wish you all the best.

Rock'n hugs ;)

Yeah I have heard that my songs are sad for the most part, but I would love to add some production to them eventually! Thanks for your honest critique. I am not necessarily set on collaborating I just like getting feedback :)

Playing guitar is one of my hobbies and while I'm not awesome, or even great at it, I consider myself 'okayish' at best. I can play a couple of AC/DC songs, Guns'n'Roses, Boston (More than a feeling), Canon Rock intro, Bohemian Rhapsody solo, and some newer songs as well from various artists.

But basically I'm into (old-school) rock and alternative rock and some metal. ;D

I want to share one of my songs but I don't want to put it under creative commons loosing all the rights, I guess I need help!
Somoeone knows a way. Is media fire a proper way or is there something better, or maybe sound cloud is the proper way?

soundcloud is the best way to share.  when you upload it you can change the creative commons licence to "all rights reserved" and disable the download if you want :)

I do make some music, although it is in the wrong genre I think :P. If you are not into Aggrotech and similar that is :).

I did some ambient tracks in the past but unfortunately my computer which I use for music making crashed 2 months ago so I need to retrieve the files from it before I can share any tracks =/. I mostly keep them on a CD or in the comp and then play them at clubs.

I am a perfectionist and therefore I havent tried to sell my musik (I never fell completely finished with a song) something that I need to get better at.

I will however start to play violin the next year (a life long dream) so lets see how that goes :).

Please everyone, give links to your music, in some time we'll be enough to make one, or even more separated collab projects

But in days, we could share opinions on chat or with mail and share music as well.

But yeah I was planning on listening to your music, as well as everyone elses, but my phone wouldn't let me at that time. I think it had something to do with the browser on my phone. So now I'm home and about to get rolling with them. :)

So I just listened to your music and really dig it! I am in awe of it since I would love to make electronic music but have no experience with anything but a piano and some old analog recording equipment. Please teach me your ways!!! :)

Also, I feel ignored/looked-over much of the time on this forum too, so I feel your frustration. But you seem cool and I really like your music!

Ok, Just finished listening to everything. All I want to say is WOW. Ok thank you.

Just kidding. I was pretty entertained.

rylieLove<< I enjoyed your mixes pretty well. So bare with me a sec, because it could just be me listening on laptop speakers. However, In ant autopilot I noticed the reverb from music to the movie clips are a little mismatched. I was able to tell that it was switching from one to the other from that. But everything else I liked a lot. the Jim Croce had a dream felt really good to me. Pretty cool mix.

Sweet Blue Girl<< The Fortress took me back in time. I felt like I needed to smoke some weed or something. It was really cool. It also seemed like it needed to be in a James Bond Intro. I kudos it.

AndromedaVox<< Holy wow. I enjoyed the album like a lot. At certain moments in my life I love to listen to just Piano and Vocals, and this was one of those moments. Yes adding drums and other instruments will plump it up to the popular music section pretty easy. But I still like the Piano and Vocal combo. My favorite was definitely the free one("Dance of the Yellow Flower")lol. Some how it reminded me of "Mad World", don't ask me why. lol I would be very interested into seeing what rileyLove could do with the "Dance of the Yellow Flower".

I enjoyed it all.

AndromedaVox<< yo your "Dance on the Yellow Flower" is freakn addicting. lol. IDK if your still messing with it or not. But this might be a small change if you are. When you hit the first chorus there is a backup singer in there. I would suggest taking it out only for the first time. So when the second time the chorus hits it adds another jolt to it.

I guess the youtube sessions were not the best compositions... The site ones are better. You could use some production on them, to emphatize melodies and so on, violins and cellos ( my secret passion by the way ) could do the work but also drum and bass on moore rythmic songs as the free one.
I don. 't like the way your voice sounds, it is too much house recording, your voice should come out stronger, and it is a problem of production ( any voice can come out stronger with proper tools ) and maybe recording ( you recorded the voice with a wrong mic maybe ). These are just general thoughts
Of course every song has his problems to solve, just like mine, as I said before. Solving them is the best way to Transmit emotions directly to the listener heart...

Thank you so much for the compliments on the songs! Yeah Dance of The Yellow Flower is a song I wrote when I was in the middle of the recording process and put it on the album last minute. I think the idea of background vocals coming in later could really work, though I just really love the combination of our voices on the track. But good suggestion! Thank you :)

No the youtube songs are really old, the ones on bandcamp are the ones I'm most proud of. The aim of this album was to really just be a stripped down recording of my work, without much production. I wanted there to be a really raw element to the album, so what you are hearing is my voice and piano with very little manipulation (a little reverb and mastering but that's it). A couple of friends of mine recorded the album and mastered it as a favor to me so I didn't have much of a role in the mastering process, but there are definitely a few tracks in which my voice could come out stronger. But overall, I'm happy with my voice on most of it (especially Dance of the Yellow Flower and Clean Enough, which came out the best quality.

Maybe OP can make a plan (song layout) and then we can all chime in something, like a short section, doesn't have to be a whole instrument track. For example I could do a little guitar part or bass (though I haven't picked it up in a while lol).

First we need to pick a key... either B, E or A minor? Those are the simplist.

My idea of creative sharing is this

We share our songs, vote the first ones we want to work on.

So the author of the first song, put it down on mp3 and send it to the collab group.

Then everyone makes hints and criticize.

The author updates the files and says i need a guitar, a bass and a piano can you record it? i need a solo there a voice a drum some fx and so on. Obviously the hints of the previous part are integrated by the first author.

The author gives proper basis to each one with enough music to play the instrument on.

The player make his hints and plays basically what she and the author agree.

The player sends back the file with same time length with just her part.

So the first author collects all parts togheter and sends them to mixing to the mixer.
The two make a first mixing

The group listens and criticizes again.

Then the final mixing is done

The copyright of the song is to the author but the arrangeaments are of the group, all credits are listed.

The song is put aside, for the next one.

Finally an album is made.

I've been in music for quite some time now, to include managing several bands and even running a few venues. I even was a professional DJ for a number of years, doing live mixes on vinyl for trance and hip-hop shows. Production is what I've spent most of my time doing though, and is my professional career currently.

Live production stopped years ago when all of my equipment and albums perished in a fire. :( So, I mostly use Logic Studio, Soundtrack Pro/ Audition now. I'm actually thinking about getting back into live music though since I miss it so much! Actually, I should be receiving a Misa Kitara any moment now. :D

But, I haven't transitioned yet, and so I haven't posted any of my work on my youtube page (omg paranoia). I'm also quite a perfectionist. :embarrassed:

I'd love to help produce some tracks though (under my hopefully to one day be permanent name). Please pm me if you would like to hear what I've done. :)

Wow I've seen the misa kitara!!! It is definitively a must buy!!! i wanted to buy a midi guitar but that thing is the future!

By now I play my Fend strat using the ipad for demoand midi  recording and mac with garageband for a step further, then i mix on logic
But i used cubase before, I don't miss it!

Fabulous! My first guitar was a Strat. :) I used to use Sonar, Cubase, and Ableton, but I absolutely love Logic now. It's so versatile! :D

Finally an album is made.

any different ideas about the process, are you okay with that?
I think this is both democratic and preserves the creativity of the first author of each song, but you can share your idea about it!

after some time passed on this post I guess we have a lot of composers, piano and guitar players, a producer, some singers, at least one drummer, some digital music makers (that of course have fx capabilities ), still lacking a full-time bass player, and some violin or cello ( although synths can do nice things with strings :( )

To clarify the situation, give us your music girls ( and boys), and show your competence!!! Don't be shy ( for me, for example it's hard to share my ugly and dissonant voice, but I'll do it i don't want to sing, so my voice will be just like a broken instrument in the musical ideas i will suggest )

I guess I will have to make a collab mailing list, so when we'll be enough ready I will ask you to give me your mail.

I think it's a fabulous idea. Each part could be in mp3.

I think your idea is a bit too restrictive... if the author does most of the work, and the guest musicians just add small parts, the author has almost full control over where the song goes.

I was thinking more along the lines of:

* Devise a plan
* Drummer/Producer uses plan to lay out a drum track
* Everyone reviews drum track to make sure they're happy
* Each person picks a time slot for example 0:40-1:20 where they will add their piece - you can pick more than one time and layer more than one track, but don't too too much. OP should update first post to remind everyone of their section.
* Each person uploads their version for others to hear, remember there will be lots of gaps this time round. Others can decide whether to expand on someone else's section (for example add a piano part etc).
* Once everyone finishes upload the MASTER TRACKS along with the blended track for the mixer to download, align together and mix.

Also we can have different plans for different songs (for example use your plan for one), and see how they all come out.

Well my plan , as yours, is a compromise between control and musical anarchysm. Of course there Are different degrees of freedom that can be' choosen, even your one, if the original author of the Sony requires it!!

Well if the basis can be' sent trough mp3 i dont know if the quality is empiti for the final mixing tracks! But your opinion as a producer is more important than mine.

I make music a lot, it'll probably end up being my career. I make hip hop and a few other genres. I'm actually working on my first album right now. =D But I don't post anything publicly on Susans because I as an artist just want to be identified as a woman, not a trans person.

I hear you all mentioning mp3 format. Just to help you all out. fyi That's a lossy compression codec. So if your going to just listen to it, then that's fine. However, don't use that format when your doing your edits and mastering. You want them raw, so use .wav when you get there.

Good Luck on everything. I can't wait to listen to some of the creations that will be made.

Rockn' Hugs ;)

U will be in it with your compositions, right?

At the end every composer should have at last one of his own works performed and arranged togheter, that is the idea...

You seem kind!
You have time for a cooperation, and can you make us listen how you play? And what you like.

it would be hard for the moment because I am living on the school and not at home, which mean I dont have recorder, camerars or anything like that, trapped at home,

if you asked me about a half yeah I might say yes, but right now it would be messy..

This is what happens with threads like this. You get 3 or more pages of "I play teh guitar!!!" but when it comes to actually doing something ... ... ...

I hope not!
Anyway I will try to not make it happen.

I did some pms to keep the project alive.

I  guess everyone makes music or likes to play could be interested in having a part in this, it's just a start, accepting doesn't mean you have to work on every song, it's called collab for this... A way to put energies togheter and talk of music, sharing our music fighting the shyness, and even asking help, or giving help.

I just want to say that the first part of this little thing ( called love... Uhmm Queens rule ) was a success, we can start with yet 8 people wanting to play the game ( Queens again uhmm ).
From the ones I contacted  still 2 components are missing but in few days I'll send the first mailgroup letter, if someone reads this post and find the whole thing interesting, pleas pm me and we can start to ride the wild wind!

I make electronic music, generally "experimental" with elements of ambient, glitch, powernoise and other things.   You can find some of my stuff at fallsastar.com, but none of it is less than a couple years old.

I took a break from it until recently and joined a semi-pro taiko drumming group.  However, our rehearsal studio does not have adequate acoustics for recording, and borrowing and transporting equipment elsewhere for recording isn't feasible.

I do play hand drums, mostly frame drums.  I'm not an expert but can keep a beat, or sample and manipulate.  I have a few other instruments I do the same with (alto and tenor recorders, guitar, theremin, etc.)

As far as collaborations go, I can provide some rhythm tracks, pads and ambiences and noises, etc., or take your tracks and go nuts with them.  One of the albums I did used vocal samples from friends in every track, heavily manipulated, though they were entirely my compositions and not really collaboration per se.  Could be fun though.

Nice!
Welcome! You should just pm me your mail and I ll add you to the mailing list!
As you see the collaboration will come out very freely with just the original author of each song choosen, each time making the integration of the work of the persons avaiable and involved, we can have fun just playing on basis made by others till adding our help and see it included in the song...
Drum parts are always welcome! As much as fx or even more manipulated track!!!

Hi.  I play bass, guitar, and keyboard.  I'd love to help out, but it's going to have to wait for a bit because I'm rather busy with life in general at the moment and I'm trying to work on my own collaborative project.  If everyone's itching to work on something right this minute, I'd love extra help on my project, which is all ready for people to join in.  You can download the work files at http://www.mediafire.com/?0dcak9mudwaps9l (http://www.mediafire.com/?0dcak9mudwaps9l) if you'd like.  As far as my recent work, you can hear it at http://soundcloud.com/mayazimmerman (http://soundcloud.com/mayazimmerman)

I have been checking out everyone's music today.  There's clearly a lot of talent here and in my experience, getting people with varied styles like this together can result in some amazing music, if done right.  I'm excited by the prospect, if we can get it all going...

As far as .wav vs. .mp3, I go with .wav all the way.  Back when I had a good interface, I recorded at 96 kHz and 32 bit.  Aside from having masters that will sound better as audio technology improves in the future, your filters applied at that rate sound better when the master is mixed down to 44.1 kHz and 16 bit.

As far as minor vs. Major keys, music theory is a tool, not a set of rules or commandments.  The keys exist in their forms for structural simplicity.  There is a valid harmonic basis for just about any combination of notes and a lot of open guitar chords use both a Major third and a minor seventh, because they're "good".  :P

I'd go with 44khz and 16 bit wavs maybe 24 bit not more, just because i would have to convert them to open them in Logic 9.

Glad to have you here!

If you pm me i can add you to the mailing list! We're completing the team in all the required fields... We have more than one mind and a lot of creative potential, with a bit of introduction we could start to share and add to our music the thing we always missed, the collaboration no synth can give, the human touch we search in every composition!

Yeah, keeping it at that rate will make it pretty accessible across everyone who would be working on it. Not to mention it will avoid massive file sizes.

Yeah, I don't expect anyone to do 96 kHz and 32 bit for collaboration over the internet.  That would be ridiculous.  I just mean that we should go with .wavs over .mp3s.  44.1 and 16 will be perfectly fine.
