Some audience members cheered last night as the Columbia City Council unanimously approved a measure that added gender identity to the city's nondiscrimination rules.
The changes make gender identity a protected category and prohibit discrimination against transgendered individuals in housing, employment and public accommodations. Other protected categories in the city include race, sex, national origin and handicap.
