Police Sgt. Lynne Benton married beautician Deborah Lee Higbee Benton seven months before the Gladstone shop owner was found dead in her salon, according to court documents obtained Thursday.

Benton presented herself to colleagues, neighbors and others as a woman but legally changed her middle name last year to "Edward" and listed her gender as male on the couple's marriage license application, filed Oct. 28 with the Clackamas County clerk's office. The couple were married the same day in a civil ceremony performed by Gladstone Municipal Judge Pro Tem Linda G. Beloof.
