Kia Ora Members and lurkers,

::) In roughly 3 hours time it will be 2012[well for us Kiwis it will be] so...HAPPY NEW YEAR ! From one of the first countries in the world to experience it...

I'm off to bed, I need my beauty sleep so I won't be welcoming it in...Mind you it will still be there tomorrow when I wake up....

I play Kingdom of Loathing (though I take months long breaks), and all the New Zealanders there seem to be trashed at the moment. I was confused until I realized how provincial I am, and how many time zones there are. XD

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

To all you Kiwis and Aussies and Happy Birthday Cindy!

Instead of the giant lighted ball drop like they do in New York City there is a town in Wisconsin where they celebrate that magical moment by lowering a giant lighted piece of cheese. ;D No wonder they call us cheeseheads.

Kia Ora,[to those still living in the past]

::) Your future's looking bright !

::) For those of you who are into making 'New Year Resolutions', one important thing to remember: You have to stick with it for at least 21 days for it to become part of the norm !

::) It takes 21 days to make or break a habit ![So I've been told]

HAPPY UPCOMING NEW YEAR ! to all my North American cousins...

Well, technically, due to the standardisation of lines of longitude and their relationship with time, the Prime Meridian in Greenwich is the proper time and everyone else is just forward or behind.

However, it being 3 o'clock in London, and we had the fun of Big Ben's Bongs and I saw the sky change colours down by the eye there - I can officially declare 2012 open.

I hope we all enjoy it.

Being called a rotter makes me feel tough and cosmopolitan.

Cindy I had to look up pom, thinking it was a word for gunshots, and lol do we really need more words for british people?

Here's wikipedia's take on it:
QuotePommy

The term pommy, pom or pomme,[1] in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, commonly denotes a person of British (usually of English heritage) origin. A derogatory term, it was controversially ruled no longer offensive in 2006 by the Australian Advertising Standards Board and in 2010 by the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority.[2] Despite these changing views, many British people or those of British origin consider the expression offensive or racist when used by people not of British origin to describe English or British people, yet acceptable when used within that community: for example, the community group British People Against Racial Discrimination was among those who complained to the Advertising Standards Board about five advertisements poking fun at "Poms", prompting the 2006 decision.[3]

The origin of this term is not confirmed and there are several persistent false etymologies. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) strongly supports the theory that pommy originated as a contraction of "pomegranate".[4] The OED also suggests that the reason for this is that pomegranate is extinct Australian rhyming slang for immigrant; it cites an article from 14 November 1912, in a once-prominent Australian weekly magazine The Bulletin: "The other day a Pummy Grant (assisted immigrant) was handed a bridle and told to catch a horse." A popular alternative explanation for the theory that pommy is a contraction of "pomegranate", relates to the purported frequency of sunburn among British people in Australia, turning their fair skin the colour of pomegranates.[5] However, there is no hard evidence for the theory regarding sunburn. Another unofficial explanation is that P.O.M. stands for 'Prisoner of Millbank ' or that P.O.H.M.E. stands for 'Prisoner of Her Majesty's Exile'. However, the OED states that there is no evidence for these terms or abbreviations being used and that they are an unlikely source. Historian Richard Holt maintains the origin of the term comes from English cricket tours of Australia where the English gentlemen amateurs would drink Pommery Champagne in preference to Australian beer.[6]
