Title: Questions for Dr. McGinn SRS Patients
Post by: Butterflyhugs on January 04, 2012, 11:28:47 PM
Did you follow her advice and have electrolysis prior to the surgery? How important do you think it is?

I'm not a McGinn patient but I do have common sense -
1) It's her advice and there's no money in it for her
2) Do you REALLY want to risk messing up your one and only chance with this multi-thousand dollar surgery for the sake of a few hundred $ ????

Hair deep in the neo-vagina is untreatable and can be a real big problem.

There's no need to be rude.

And actually there is money in it for her because it's offered at her clinic.

Sorry hun ...... I genuinely didn't mean to be offensive at all.
You asked for McGinn patients and I'm not one so I was just explaining why I was answering anyway, then kept my post brief (for once) by just listing my points.

When I was in for my op, there was a girl in with a problem and I could overhear the surgeons quiet conversation with her after her op.  Her problem was internal hair.  Dilating and sex pull some of the hairs out and they get tangled with other rooted hairs and gunked up.  They compact and become a tight wad like a wire pan-scrubber, build up and build up leading to discomfort, loss of depth, inflamation and infection.
My electrologist has been treating MTF's for 30 years and has been approached many times by girls with internal hair problems but has been unable to help.  Sometimes the surgeons themselves have been a bit blase about genital hair removal and said Oh don't worry about that, but if it does become a problem then it is recurrent and practically impossible to treat by any current means.
I had very little money, even though the NHS were doing my op (simple inversion) at no cost to me.  There was no way that I was going to take that risk as when I looked at my situation critically, I had hair fully halfway down the shaft.  The clitoral area also needs some clearing.
If your op involves a scrotal flap then scrotal hair is a big problem as it will be right at the deepest part of the vagina.

Don't chance it, it just ain't worth it.
Again, sorry if my short reply seemed snappy, that was not my intention.   :)

I'm not trying to derail your thread but I was thinking the same thing about Dr. Suporn. I've heard he doesn't require electrolysis because he removes the follicles or something along those lines. I wonder if any Suporn girls had issues with hair growing inside the vagina afterwards.

I am a Mcginn girl, i did not want to take a chance of having hair grow inside. i had 6 genital laser treatments prior to my surgery, my electrologist is not comfortable doing genital electrolysis or laser on men or women, i was unable to find any local electrologist that would do it  so i contacted the women that did my laser facial hair removal, she was an OBGYYN and agreed to give it a go.

I do know people that had no genital hair removal and Dr. Mcginn still went ahead with the surgery, she recommends it but it is not a show stopper, she does scrape any visible hair follicles during surgery,

Thank you Steffi and Paula for your responses.

@paulault55: Did any of the people who didn't have genital hair removal that you know have complications because of it later on?

I'm asking this question because if I choose a doctor in the U.S., it will probably be Dr. McGinn. But I'm currently completely unable to visit her clinic once every month for 6 months prior to surgery for the electrolysis they offer there.

Hey butterfly ;) , I am a Mcginn girl and yes I did follow her rules and you dont necesarily have to have your electrolocis with her ,so no she doesnt benefit you do . I would reccommend that you ask her if yoj are going to use her.she is very adamant about what she requires and as a Mcginn post op I am Ohhhh soooo glad.that I gollowed her every desire and I am.quite delighted well ecstatic with my results .

Thanks Suigeniris, I guess I will start the uncomfortable process of looking for an alternate electrologist to do it  :P

Butterfly,  I came across a posting by a couple of people who had problems post-SRS with hair growiing in her neo-vaginas. At least one of the two had the hair follicles scraped during SRS surgery, so apparently the scraping wasn't sufficient. I don't recall which surgeon did the work, but I don't think it was Dr. McGinn. Personally, I wouldn't take the chance, and I would be sure that electrolysis had done the job, completely, well before SRS. That's just my opinion, but it's an opinion about a vagina that has to last a lifetime (and I just can't think of anything more gross than hair growing inside a vagina - it's like it's growing outside in!).

Hi Butterflyhugs

I just posted some points in regards to genital electrolysis here (https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,112569.msg868939.html#msg868939)

In this post I mention that Dr Brassard states that "At this time we do not feel that hair removal is indicated." (http://srsmontreal.com/2009/08/31/male-to-female-mtf-srs-info-for-patient-in-usa/)

Ultimately it will be up to you to decide whether having this type of electrolysis will be of any benefit to you in the long run.

Take care and all the best for the future.

Kind regards
Sarah B

I did not have to do any form of electrolysis with Dr Suporn and i have no hair anywhere near the opening of my vagina.
