I've been reading an article on the Daily Mail site in Britain about the young FtM man who gave birth recently and is thought to be the country's first "male mother." It's an objective profile — balanced and fair. They don't reveal his identity because, as the article says, "He requested anonymity because his history as a woman is not known to many of his friends, and he is reluctant to be labelled a transsexual parent because he identifies with being male." So, they call him Bob throughout the story.

Bob says: "I would certainly want to help people in an anonymous capacity, but I wouldn't want to become famous for that."

Well and good . . . until you get to the readers' comments, so many of them judgmental and ignorant, ie. they don't seem to be written by medical experts. I have to wonder if Bob now regrets giving the interview because the paper hasn't protected him from them.

My friend Autumn Sandeen comments on my preceding post, about trans people and the media:

Hi Jill,

I take a different POV than the POV you put forward in your piece "Transgender Issues: Media Undermined by Some Readers," in which you wrote:

[...]

At PHB I wrote the piece It's Time For Trans People To Be Out Of The Closet, and a more abbreviated posting on the same thought at LGBT Weekly entitled Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are.

As a trans woman, my ultimate goal isn't to blend in with society, but instead to challenge society — to create tension for the purpose of creating social change.
