Title: Foster Folks
Post by: alexharmon on March 13, 2012, 07:47:40 PM
My foster folks don't even want me thinking about transitioning. I'm not even a minor. I should be able to make my own choices as far as how short I want my hair to be or how baggy my clothes are or my choice to not wear makeup like the other girls. I don't want her to find out that I am thinking of transitioning, she already suspects me, and she already has enough issue with me being pansexual and indirectly discourages me from going to GSA meetings and such in the community.

One time she told me, "If you dress like a man, the other foster girls' case workers will figure out you're a lesbian and then ask you to get removed." I know that that's a lie, there are anti-discrimination laws in my state.

I feel very confused and unsafe here.

Thats a really difficult situationt to be in and I wish I could give you some advise but I have no idea about foster care. Im presuming you can't ask to have new foster carers?

If you are not a minor then theres really nothing she can do to stop you dressing how you wish. It is  your life and you can make your own decisions, she is only supposed to advise you.

Unfortunately, it does not matter how old I am, they are still my legal gaurdians and can tell me what and what not to do. If I disobey I can risk taking longer to get out of this terrible system!

Thats a bummer of a situation. I think I would grit my teeth, get away with as much as I could without really disobeying them and then I could get out of the system sooner and start living how I wanted too.

It sounds strange to me....im pretty sure in the UK were i live, once you are an adult you can pretty much do what you like really. How do you get out of the system?

I'd explain it, but... it's sort of personal. Sorry.
