I blame it on global warming.
Its a little known fact that solar and wind both generate more transition naming options, while recycling merely adds "ie" to the end of existing names with little hearts over the "i"... More recent explorations of cheesecake porn driven energy sources have only concluded that cheesecake is awesome in or out of a porn context. Further investigation is obviously called for.
My work here is done.

10 Catherine/Cathys

7 Erins
23 Michelles

Those names are very common in society, that's all, especially names like Sara, or Sarah. Oh, and EVEN Catherine, Kathy, Cathy and so on. I chose my name Catherine, for various reasons, I originally did make a list in my mind, so it was either Maria or Catherine. I chose Catherine, and at the time I wasn't sure why it was, I just felt more attracted to that name. My Mother's best friend was called Catherine, and she died of Cancer a long time ago. So that was a little bit of an 'Ouch' moment there. THEN, the day I told my mother, when I 'Came out' as it were, I later find out, from my sister, that I 'was' supposed to of been a girl, my mother, was planning to call her first born, 'Catherine'. So fact was she intended to originally call me Catherine all along, I never knew about it until many years later. So that really is 'spooky' to say the least. Who knew ? All I can say is some things are meant to happen.

I liked the name Jessica way before knowing anyone in the trans community. I originally used the name Staci when I signed up here because there seemed to be too many "Jessica's" around. Then I thought that it really didn't matter because most people that I know wont relate to it as a common trans name so what does it matter...

This seems to be common among guys too, I see a lot of Kaidens, Aiden...Hayden lol anything with 'den' at the end really.

Every transguy I have encountered in person has been a hayden, ayden, or similar.
About 70%ish of the transgirls i encountered in person has been Zoey, Chloe, some derivitive of Megan. I have been seeing a lot of Teagans........i have never seen a Teagan (Teagen) is my entire life until I became transgender and now I personally know of 7.

Very similar to me then ! ;D lol, it is actually very weird when this happens,. My mother was supposed to call me "Catherine", but I inadvertently chose it anyway, with out knowing about that. When I found out, I think we were both a little stunned, to say the least.

I had talked about this topic with a couple of friends. Really about you having the opportunity to choose your own name now. I mentioned like why not choose something different like Pickle (random thought ). They laughed and started to call me pickle.lol... But I see your point. I noticed it too.
I almost went with the name Jamie bc it was was similar to my boy name. However I decided to stick with Harleen (Harley). I liked it because it refers to Harley Quinn which explains my personality a lot. Hahaha. :)
I also asked my mom what would she had named me if I was a girl and she said Clementine. I was like hellz no. lol.

lol looking on that website, I see the meaning of "Catherine" is:
I was 'Never' pure :P haha.
QuoteFrench and English: from the medieval female personal name Catherine, Latin Caterina. This is of uncertain origin, being first attested in Greek in the form Aikaterinē but later affected by folk etymological associations with Greek katharos 'pure'. It was borne by various early Christian saints, and was popular throughout the Middle Ages.

I dunno why..
I named myself after someone I knew growing up... during my teenage years she was the only one who knew about my love for womans pantyhose..... she even helped me shave my legs for the first time.. sadly she is no longer with us :(
she would have been proud of me coming forward with this transition... so I have her name = Noleen.

Am I the only one who chose their new name specifically because they've never met anyone else with that name? I've literally never met anyone outside my family with my male name. I don't think I'd know how to handle someone else having my name.
Back in the bad old days when everybody went stealth, "common sense" was that you always picked a common name so you wouldn't "stand out". I've seen it repeated on more than one well-known TG site. That could at least explain some of the older women.

As Mr Shakespeare said: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
As long as the individual is happy with it, that's what matters, whether they share their name with ten, a hundred, or a thousand other people. :) Besides, "Oi, you over there!" just doesn't have that personal touch. ;D

Thank you Dad, haha!! I picked Luke (well, Lucas), and I don't know any other ftm's named Lucas... At least, not personally. Can't wait till I can get my name changed permanently!

I knew twin girls named Hope and Faith in Jr High. Later I heard a story from a professor about during Roman times at a checkpoint near Alexandria that a customs official asked a traveler "Do you have anything to declare?" The answer from the christian traveler was "Just hope, faith, chastity, charity and myself!" He was levied a customs tax for transporting four prostitutes! How some things never change. Chastity and Charity are two more bad names for the girls I knew in the past. I don't know how Hope and Faith fared, Charity is fine, but Chastity did the strip joint thing. It is unknown about Chastity now, it has been a while. I still pray for her, for she is my distant kin.
I thought that my chosen name had the unusual spelling for that name until I came on Susan's and one of the responses that one of my sister transwomen has a daughter by that same spelling.

I love 'Amanda'. It's a beautiful name.
Here are a triplet of three names I'll bet no one has used for girls/women: Ellandra, Aryl, Kiris
Someone, scoop one up before someone else takes it!

She wanted to call me Crystal, but my best (guy) friend's girlfriend was named that, so for obvious reasons I'm not exactly comfortable with that. :)

Probably from movies, books and TV shows of the day.
I bet Jessica comes, at least in part, from Jessica Rabbit, from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988.

Pop culture definitely lays a part, of course, but considering that film came out when I was seven, and there were already at least ten "Jessicas" in my school by then, it's clearly not the biggest contributing factor.

Could also be down to the meanings of names. Jessica is derived from hebrew and means "one who looks forth" or "foresighted". Seems preferable to giving someone a name which means "chocolate-covered toilet seat" or something like that.

Hey, I found the following info on the TS Roadmap site:
This information is interesting, and some of you might find it useful! -- Cybele :)
Names sometimes associated with ->-bleeped-<-
There are not a ton of names that have seeped into the popular psyche as connected with transgender issues, but there are a few which some people might connect to our community. Use these with that in mind.
•Bree (name of Felicity Huffman character in Transamerica)
•Buffy (name of Tom Hanks character on sitcom Bosom Buddies)
•Canary (once-famous popular singer Canary Conn)
•Candy (Andy Warhol companion Candy Darling)
•Christine (first publicized U.S. Christine Jorgensen)
•Dil (heroine from The Crying Game)
•Divine (drag queen actress appearing in numerous John Waters films)
•Geraldine (comedian Flip Wilson's drag persona)
•Glenda (heroine of Ed Wood camp film Glen or Glenda)
•Hildegarde (name of Peter Scolari character on sitcom Bosom Buddies)
•Jan (famous travel writer and author Jan Morris)
•Jaye (Jaye Davidson starred as Dil in The Crying Game)
•Lola (from the Kinks' song about a woman by that name)
•Myra (character in Gore Vidal's Myra Breckenridge)
•Pat (androgynous character from Saturday Night Live)
•Priscilla (name of the bus in the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert)
•Renee (well-known ophthalmologist and tennis player Renee Richards)
•Roberta (name of the ex-linebacker in John Irving's The World According to Garp)
•RuPaul (Self-explanatory)
•Shannon (porn star)
•Stasha (porn star)
•Tootsie (as in the film)
•Tula (professional name of model/actress Caroline Cossey)
•Victoria (film Victor/Victoria and crossdresser store fave Victoria's
Secret) •Wendy (well-known synthesizer pioneer and composer Wendy Carlos)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Types of names which are more common among transgender women
I've noticed that TGs and strippers often gravitate toward similar naming patterns... I'm not exactly sure of the significance of that generalization. They often seem to do with notions of hyperfeminine glamor and skew toward certain socioeconomic groups.
Puns: Anita Drink, Amber Waves, Amanda B. Reckonedwith, you get the idea. Divas: Bette, Whitney, Barbra, Liza, etc. Minerals and gems: Jade, Sapphire, Amber, Crystal, etc. Generally more popular with strippers than trans women, I think. French-sounding names: -ique, -ette, La- etc. which seems linked to... Fashion and luxury names: CoCo, Chloe, Chanel, Tiffany, Lexus, etc. Pet names: Sasha, Ginger, Fifi, etc. In fact, there's a TG game where you can come up with your drag name by taking a family pet name and either your street name or mother's maiden name. Soap-opera names: Lexie, Reena, Drucilla, the sorts of names you've probably never heard used for real people. Alliterative: Repeating beginning letters in a name. For instance, two famous Chicago

I do get a bit annoyed by the "just born" aspect of transgender female names.. It becomes overblown and cliche to read on social networking sites names like, "Louise May". Names should be simple, first and last name.
Of course I took my father's last name. Thank god he didn't name me, the names of his culture are soooo long! I'm so proud to be an American.

Its not just the trans community that want to pick unusual names. Here in merry old Scotland, my generation (nominally 20-25s) have picked the most unusual and cringeworthy names for their children - theres nothing as embarrassing as hearing a mother in the local supermarket call out in broad Glaswegian "Chardonnay McGlinchy, come here at once!"
At least we get the advantage of common sense and experience to choose something suitable to be known by hehe!

I don't know, a lot of FTMs pick the same names too, notably Aiden (or variations of), Skylar and I've been seeing a lot of Jacks around too. I think it's because before people get involved in a community they like the names, and then when they do it's sort of a name they're already attached to regardless of popularity.
Space sounds really cool. o.o

I did go back and research names that were being used in 1969 when I was born.... That's one thing I think is important. Not too many "Brandii's" (Note the two "I"'s) back in 69! LOL. It should be age relevant. But of course, I didn't like a lot of those names, so I kept researching until I saw that Aubrey was starting to be used in the late 50's and 60's as a girls name.. (It's roots are of male descent.. go figure). It was an offshoot of Audrey. But there was something with that that just clicked.... And it flows with my last name.
I slept on it for a while, and I still liked it, so here I am! Aubrey!
