A private member's bill that aims to protect transgender people from discrimination is inching its way through Parliament as the controversy over the transgender Miss Universe contestant, Jenna Talackova, plays out in the media.
Bill C-279 received a second reading last week. It proposes to recognize gender identity and gender expression as identifiable groups in a section of the Criminal Code on hate crimes and to offer protection in the Canadian Human Rights Act.
