Title: Our finest sense?

On the way home I heard an ad for a one hour eyeglass place. One line said vision is our finest sense. It got me thinking. For me, vision is probably the most important sense, but I think the sense of smell gives me the most enjoyment. Fresh cut grass, flowers, the smell of the ocean are all things that have an ability to make me feel good. What are your feelings? Hugs, Devlyn

I think they all work in synergy and you only realise the value of one when it's missing. :)
That being said, I think the most important sense is The Sixth Sense. I mean... he sees dead people!! They're dead and... and... like... people. But dead. And covered in breath mist! How can that not be important somehow? :o

Devlyn, good one.
Hearing...the sound of the world, the roar of the ocean, lapping of a wave on a lake, whistle of the wind, music & the music of nature, voice, the purr of my loving wife. Or was that my cat?!
Cheers
Jamie

Their all pretty great... Hearing and sight are my top two but I would go for hearing. I would need to hear something! I'd be really depressed if I couldn't listen music anymore. Besides I'd always be terrified without it, I wouldn't be able to hear if someone was sneaking up on me. Heh, I'm a little paranoid...

Don't underestimate the feeling of touch! The nerves in your fingers are so sensitive you can feel things you can't even see!
And you can remember exactly how something felt your whole life time...no matter how long that may be, it could be the feel of the satin around your baby blanket, The feel of touching cotton candy, your first splinter, touching a hot stove the first time...our memory banks store these all up so we can either enjoy or avoid "touching" as we go thru life.

Scent and touch for me. They're tied up. My eyesight is horrendous so that can go and hearing...hearing's important, but I'd hate it if I was no longer able to smell things. I have partial sensation loss in areas due to nerve damage so I love to touch things with my fingers to make it more real since I can't feel on the sides of my legs.

Touch, sight, and hearing for me. Touch because it's probably my strongest sense (my eyes suck) and I would feel lost without it. Sight so I can see and learn and experience. Hearing so I can hear music.

Interesting topic. I have synesthesia, so my hearing and sight are connected. Sounds produce different visible colors based on pitch, and patterns based on the movement of music. I don't know if I am explaining that very well. I have had it since as long as I can remember, and it makes hearing certain music this amazing light show. I see the colors very brightly when my eyes are closed, when they are open there are little flashes of lights and patterns in my peripheral vision. Seeing color produces a memory of the sound. Since for they are connected, I can't imagine losing either sense.
I still remember how surprised I was to learn that people don't normally see/hear things that way.

I thought for a minute that you were talking about that "fine sense" often displayed by the most intelligent muscle on your body.

From a biological view, it goes this way:
Hands/feet
Lips/tongue
Look up sensory homunculous - a person drawn with the body proportionate to the amount of sensory innervation.
What touches me most though is hearing - I could be brought close to tears with some musical performances and that was pre HRT.

Interesting as ever Devlyn.
For me I think sight. But touch is very important as you tend to cut off bits limb if you cannot feel things.

For me I say hearing and eye sight even though they aren't perfect. I would like to hear and see the video games I play. For the most part I don't care about sense of smell (unless in warning situations). That just means that I'll be less tempted to want to eat.
I also like touch. I'd like to feel the vibrations my video game controller gives off at times. Plus I would also like to experience the touch of a woman one day.
Lets not forget the sense of humor.

I dunno, sight is pretty essential in most functions related to jobs... it's tough, but I think sight is a little more meaningful to me than hearing.
My other senses don't work very well, so while I would miss them if they were gone... if I had to sacrifice them to retain my sight and/or hearing, then I would do so.
My sense of touch is useless... aside from intimate situations, where it might approach average.
My sense of taste is so numb - food doesn't strongly taste like anything, at least not like it used to. It tastes enough for me to have likes and dislikes, but has been deteriorating ... so I have fewer dislikes as it's all the same.
My sense of smell is the worst of them all. I can smell things if they are strong enough, but not like the people in my life can - they can smell a flower a foot away, while I have to put it up to my face. I can't smell a whole lot unless I go right to the source.
So, yeah. :\

I have all my senses but they are all slowly failing equally which kinda sucks but at least they are all still there... The ringing in my ears is constant and the eyes need reading glasses 24/7 just to see.. the nose seems dull with regards to smell which must be from all the surgeries over the yrs.. my touch is desensitized due to the simple life i live in the country and well my taste is about the one thing that is the strongest but then i can deal with any taste and not everyone likes my food :D

When you grow under constant threat at an early age your sense become very keen. While as a child this was a curse, it become a life saver when in combat.
I am very aware of all inputs, but relay mostly in my vision, which for my advance age :o is superb. My sense of smell was better than many humans, e.g. being able to recognize a person's specific scent left in a room or piece of clothing; now however after several months on E, it has become even more acute, which has its draw back in congested places
