Roy Applewood (Tom Wilkinson), after fainting on the night of his 25th anniversary, shocks his wife Irma (Jessica Lange) and his pastor by revealing that he suffers from gender identity disorder and plans to transition into a woman and be renamed Ruth. Roy's decision to pursue a sex-change operation is greeted with intolerance and disgust by some of his co-workers and members of his church. While Ruth tries to keep the family together, Irma's initial reaction is to separate from her. Patty Ann (Hayden Panettiere), their daughter, is more accepting, but Wayne (Joe Sikora), their son, struggles with the transition. Ruth faces ostracism at church and at work. She finds understanding from her boss but not from her minister. In the end, Irma discovers that love transcends gender and the family survives.

This is an awesomely well done, and well acted movie. It is a very realistic portrayal.

This has been recommended by Phoenix as she has watched her daughter be reborn and helped her understand what was happening.
I'm going to find it and watch it.

Susan, Cindy, Jamie & Kelly,
If you haven't already seen this film, I hope you do. This was on one of our tv movie channels in the past year. My wife and I watched this film. It is so real, the whole cast are wonderful to make their characters so believable. Especially Tom Wilkinson, who I had never heard of before this role. The film is a gem. We loved it.

Oh, I found a copy somewhere, it's amazing what you find on the web if you only know what to search for. It was a great movie! The title of the movie reminds me of a story.
I was visiting with a friend whose mother was in the hospital, once their mother was asleep in bed, my friend decided she wanted to get a drink to settle her nerves. Well right behind the hospital was a VFW post which had its own little bar. My friend and myself headed over there.
We were sitting at the bar she was drinking a glass of wine, and I was drinking a Coke or ice water because I had to drive, and I noticed that this please pardon the expression "redneck," was eyeing us from across the room.
He starts coming our way, and I tense up figuring that this was it, and I'm about to get into a fight. When he gets over to us he eyes is both up and down, and asks in a serious but slightly drunken tone, "Are you two lesbians," he asked? Having expected to be in a bar fight I was a little bit stunned by the question, as my friend roared with laughter. "I'm normal," was the only thing that I could think of to reply. Thinking it over the redneck turned and walked away, as my friend continue laughing very loudly!
I hope you all enjoyed this little tale out of Susan's life.
Remember that story Emerald?
Just to clarify it for the record, it wasn't my intention with my response to imply that lesbians or gays are abnormal
