Title: got a fun "comment" the other day
Post by: Michelle G on May 27, 2012, 06:51:30 PM
I own an art based business in a very male dominated industry, and because of that I have to present as very male for now  (ugh) and my male name is always used of course!

The other day I was going over design concepts with a customer who is a great guy but also quite the jokester and enjoys doing plays on words, etc.

I can get a bit "animated" over my art presentations and my "male voice" slips away some (oops)

customer looks at me at me and sez "yer such a girl!...I should call you Michelle instead of Michael" I just smiled and in my best girly voice said "gee Matt...OK!!" then went back to tough guy mode ;)

He has NO clue at all...but it was quite fun for me, lol

I love it when stuff like that happens.  I still present male and no one at work knows about me.  The other day while working I broke a nail and before I could think, I commented on it.  One of the ladies at work heard me and said "sometimes you act like such a girl, you should just start hormones and go full time".  She then laughed, and so did I since I do plan to start hormones (hopefully the end of next month if all goes well).

That is freaking awesome.  The things people say sometimes hits dead on and they don't even know it yet.

I'm still presenting as female for the time being since I live with my mom who wouldn't approve. I was talking to my sister about a hair show she went to and her 4 year old nephew was beside her.  She asked me if I was going to the hair show with her and the other women and I said no.  The little nephew said, "you have to go because you are a girl but you are almost a boy now."  I laughed and asked him what made him say that and he said because my face is round.  There was another time where he told me that he thinks I'm a boy now.  I don't have too much of an idea where he would get that notion from other than hinting that I wanted a flat chest but hey I will take it!

Children will "out" us way before adults even have a clue...its so funny to see the parents reactions and hurried apologies ;)

I had an instance a couple days ago where my friend texted me "damn, gurl... blah blah blah."  He knows I want to be female, but I couldn't tell if it was him joking around (since we joke around ALL the time), or if he was validating me.  I chose to take it as the latter, especially since he's totally okay with my identity.

Several months before I began transistioning, a coworker (who's always talking just to hear himself talk) walked past my cube and said, "You the man, Dave."

I replied simply, "For now."

Before I came out to everyone, three of us were joking at work, and the female, who already knew, said something along the lines of, 'Well I'm the only girl here so what I say goes'. She then came over to me and said yes I know he is the only guy here, but it slipped out.

It was in no way meant offensively.

Years ago I remember getting a letter from the Christian Brother school that I miserably attended, saying they were going co-ed. I wrote back and told them they had been co-ed since when I was a student. Never got a reply.

A close friend is always coming out with  "you're such a girl!"  I just smile, until she realises what she has said. We both laugh.

About a year before I went full time, I was having a bad hair day. I'd used the body spray instead of the hairspray while getting ready that morning. Since my home was close to my office, I simply went home on a break, fixed my hair, and went back.

Later that day when I told my (then) wife about this, she asked, "You came home to fix your hair?"

"Yes."

She just looked at me and said, "You are such a girl."

My mother often used to say to me: "If you were a woman, you'd be a bitch" and "You'll make someone a good wife one day."

I never got the chance to tell her before she died, but I suspect she kinda knew.

Fantastic story!

Long before I even looked into being TG or IS, people commented on how animated I get when I'm excited. Just jokingly though. But, the past few years because of the people I work around now, whenever I got excited and slipped into girl mode (sometimes giggling, like seriously giggling), I got really strange looks and some nasty comments on how feminine I was acting. So, I started to try really hard to not get excited anymore... but it still slipped out too often. ;)

So I don't even care now lol. And I find it absolutely hilarious the crazy looks I get.

Got another fun comment today,

I took Marybeth to the doctor for a follow up on an injured knee, as I was standing there holding her purse over my shoulder while she did paperwork one of the office girls teased and said "that purse goes good with your shoes" I was in total guy mode there today but again in my best girl voice I easily said "why thank you" with a big cute smile.... I know she was just having fun but it was still nice to hear :)

*laughs* I cannot remember how many times I was told that I was such a girl/bitch/etc. Something about the way our personalities come across to the world lets them know. When I told my brother, his only response was, "Yeah... and? I already knew that."

Good stuff Michelle....  ;)

When I told my primary care physician, he told me "I'm very perceptive, but I would have never guessed this.  You were such a man's man.  Guess you got good at hiding."  and then went on to say "This is really awesome, I am so excited to be a part of this!".  We talked for about 40 minutes, and he was just thrilled.  Finally, he and the nurse said, "You are just going to be gorgeous!".... which was nice to hear.

I have such a great doctor... it's funny just how excited he is about all this.  He told me to come in the same week I get back from my FFS, because he can't wait to see me.

Fun stuff....

yep...there have been so many times I have not even tried to hide it, lol  after 50 years of the male charade its time to just be "me" in appearance as well, I have been changing some of my "boy clothes" to more unisex type wear, and since I live in the country, girls out here dress in practical jeans and t-shirt anyway.

put away most all of my black Harley shirts from around the country and now wear colors I like ;)

Aubrey, I am SO excited to follow you as well....in short time a gorgeous butterfly will appear from the cocoon in all her splendor and beauty :)

A little advise from up the road from where you're at: take it slow with yourself when you start going out. The worst memories from when I started transition are the ones where I remember what I was wearing and wince or when I did something overly femme (you'll be a little bit of a pendulum for a while) and look back with a "what the hell was I thinking/doing?!?"

Thank you Victoria, I will do that for sure...and remember it as good advice from someone who cares :)
