Metalhead reporting in. I dress in black, I'm sick and twisted, I eat children, I rob graveyards, I sacrifice animals, I-... oh sorry, got a bit carried away there. I do dress in black though :P Admittedly am a bit twisted too..
Grew up during the most glorious era of Black Metal in Sweden, what can I say ;)

I spent a lot of time around the goths in high school and college, but metal will always be something that is deeply a part of me. The more extreme, the better; we live in a great time for the stuff I like :)

I like metal, but most metalheads I've met and I don't see eye to eye. I've been told I'm goth because I like halloweeny stuff, The Addams Family, Creature Feature, etc, but the goths I've met and I don't get along either.
Although it does make me laugh that I have been told by a goth that it isn't halloween.
I am a nerd. Like everyone else. lol

You don't always have to look the part, just the attitude and the lifestyle in someone else is what attracts me.
I feel sorta bad saying this since my boyfriend isn't typically punk or grundge, he listens to some forms of rock though.
Love him to death, but there's plenty of stuff we dont see eye to eye on :P

I would say I'm "alternative". I don't much care for labels either but at one time I was really heavy into several music scenes and worked in that industry. I still do work with a lot of musicians in a round about way. I never did the tattoo, piercing thing but I have had my hair every style and color before. I did have a goth phase back when that was peaking in the late 80's (I tried really, really hard to look like Peter Murphy!). So basically I'd say that I never really wanted to be "normal" and fit in with the majority and to me, that's pretty much what "alternative" is all about.

What area are you from? My town never had any real scene as far as metal bands are concerned
My experience is from about 12 years ago though, I have no idea what the scene is like now. Some bands never made it out of here, my brother being one example (his was a one-man project though), he was very good at the time, with a very unique sound I haven't heard again. And two bands that got big are Naglfar and Ancient Wisdom. Bewitched too, but that's satanic trash metal.
There used to be a small studio/cafe/club where bands like this came to play. In fact, there were several cafes and pubs and even metal shops where alternative people specifically used to hang out, but now? They've pretty much all shut down. I've no idea where people go, or if the alternative scene even exists anymore. I never see goths and punkers nowadays. Well I haven't done a lot of digging though, admittedly.

Some black metal bands I like:
Dissection (http://youtu.be/FgNuecoIVEU) (one of the first very influential swedish black metal bands, anyone who hasn't heard them but likes black metal, should listen to the albums The Somberlain, and Storm of The Light's Bane, just saying this for all in here)
Thulcandra (http://youtu.be/9wmcUMSCsKA) (very heavily influenced by Dissection)
Naglfar (http://youtu.be/jixsazChvIg)
Sear Bliss (http://youtu.be/KCIsj5qiCJo) (they use trumpets and make it work really well)
Ceremonial Castings (http://youtu.be/2yk-hpcLR24) (Americans! yay, it happens sometimes! ;P)
Imperium Dekadenz (http://youtu.be/UlNEhYC7k_o)
Gehenna (http://youtu.be/Gz0UWbgsX6c)
Sargeist (http://youtu.be/iWsZcp2B76k)
Bornholm (http://youtu.be/rV1BeKmP9bs)
But my one all time favourite band is Summoning (http://youtu.be/YFbBKiSC2MY), and I CRIED when I heard they will get together and make new music again. Words cannot describe that band.

Had this forum not had the auto embed feature, I would have linked a specific song to each band, but as it is, that would get messy :P
Code Select
[ noembed]Song Title [ /noembed]
That will stop it being auto embedded. :) (remove the spaces in the tags - they're only there so they show up in the code)

I prefer to think of myself as someone who takes what I like and makes it suit me. I'm usually a blend of scene, office, and steampunk. It is kind of amazing how much our clothes can say about us though. Our personalities, financial status, and our work.
Music wise I love my metal, folk, indie-pop and classical.
Speaking of which, I must go shopping soon, both for music and clothes, not to mention make-up.

Actually, my given fashion history and music tastes actually sort of justify that I belong in this mix, but oh well.
I also have larger sized plugs and my cartilage gauged - and back in high school, I used to dye my hair strange colors.

I'm into the same. Joy Division has been my favorite band for about 20 years now. In the past couple of years I've gotten to see Peter Hook's band The Light perform Unknown Pleasures and Closer in their entirety. I've also seen Bauhaus a few times, Peter Murphy solo a few times and Siouxie too. I've seen her in a small club when she was doing The Creatures, it was amazing. I'm lucky enough to have seen Christian Death when Rozz was still alive, that is probably one of the best shows that I've ever been to. I found a video of it a few years ago, it made my girlfriend start asking questions, I was sitting on one of the speakers and you can see me clearly in some shots, I was wearing a dress and makeup.

I saw Bauhuas around that time, they weren't with NIN though. I would have loved to see that show. Sometime around 1990, NIN was supposed to open for Peter Murphy but they canceled the show for some reason. I did get to see them not too long before that opening for The Jesus And Mary Chain in 1989 in club that held about 300 people.

Hi. This is a pretty funny conversation; I totally relate. I'm probably older than most of you. I grew up in the dawn of the Los Angeles punk scene back in the late 70's and early 80's. I was a regular at the shows that included The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, DOA, Agent Orange, MDC, Suicidal Tendencies among many others. For a couple of years I played steel drums in a harsh punk band called Zendik Farm Band. It was a wild, crazy, exciting time to be alive!
These days I'm more of a human Barbie Doll than hardcore punker. Though my waist length dark hair is loaded with bright streaks and highlights of electric pink, bubblegum pink, electric blue, raspberry blue, purple, burgundy, caramel, chocolate cherry, lavender and jet black. My hair gets a lot of attention whenever I step out of the house.
I still get my yayas off most every day, rocking my house off the foundation with my 300 watt-per-channel sound system, rocking the neighborhood to the sounds of Suicidal Tendencies, The Queers, NOFX, NIN, Fugazi, and Limp Bizkit, among others. I may be a human Barbie Doll by image, but my heart will always belong to hardcore punk.
Thanks for letting me share. What a fun conversation!
Peace,
Miharu

Bauhaus, Joy Division, and now NOFX, Circle Jerks, Fugazi...
This thread is bringing back a lot of memories and making me dig through Spotify for some good nostalgia

I am Goth, though not a scenester. I have never been in with the cool people, here or IRL - I have eclectic musical tastes. That is all.

I got called anternertive but I am not of any special type.
I got called "emo" a couple of times, cause of my hair, but I dont see myself as emo.
Maybe I would be punk if I had more money, and wasnt so lazy. haha.. :D
to be frank, I dont like the word "alternative" that much.
I feel its too much based on only clothing and music and not really on people,
at least where im from. and I dont feel like getting jugded just for whatever music I like or for what clothes I wear.
