DENVER — The Denver Sheriff Department in January will roll out new policies regarding transgender inmates, The GLBT Community Center of Colorado announced Friday.

The new 360-degree policies will include new practices from transport to booking and housing, said The Center's Transgender Programs Coordinator Courtney Gray.

The policies, which have been in development for almost two years, could be the most progressive in the nation, she said, and aim to keep all inmates safe.

DENVER - The Denver Sheriff's Department just implemented a new policy that deals with transgender inmates. Denver is one of only a handful of cities to implement such a policy.

"In the State of Colorado, I would say it's very unique," Denver Undersheriff Gary Wilson said. "We believe it was important for us to not just protect the persons from physical harm but also from psychological harm while they're with us inside the jail."
Wilson says the new transgender policy will save the City and County of Denver money.

"Prior to this policy going in place, the most likely place for housing transgender [inmates] was to be locked down for 23 hours a day," Wilson said.

This is better than the 23 hour a day lockup policy they had before.  Still, you don't want to go to jail.
