Title: Always save the bacon grease.
Post by: Devlyn on July 07, 2012, 07:45:13 PM
I think it's in the kitchen Bible. If you get ahold of some schmaltz, hang onto that, too. Hugs, Devlyn

I do when I can, especially camping.  However, I bought a pound of Hormel bacon for the summer garden tomato BLTs and it didn't rend much fat, sticks to the non-stick pan, and tasted more like smoked ham than bacon.  No wonder it was cheaper than the Kroger brand!  I went back to the store, Tyson was on sale, much better!

OMG you're totally from Alabama too, aren't you?

Jk. God I miss bacon. I've been veggie for more than half my life.

Watch out Felix, the smell of bacon frying has brought more vegetarians undone than anything else.
Also what the hell is Schmaltz?  Apart from bad music.

Right on, Felix!  You rock, dude!  I've been a strict vegetarian for 26 years!

(Not that I'm opposed to eating flesh; that's what animals get for being made out of tasty meat!)

I have over 5 gallons of the stuff from animal fat rendered down. I do not use it to cook with but to potentially keep the fire buring in my tiny oil lamp if times get hard.

I'm one of those paleo kooks who believes we evolved eating salty meats like pork and that they're actually good for us. I eat bacon almost every day and cook with the grease. Meanwhile, grains mess me up something fierce and I've had to cut them out.

I have a lot of mixed-up reasons for not eating meat, and it's not primarily a health thing. Before getting pregnant I was one of those vegetarians that pretty much lived off of cheese and potatoes. Now I'm mostly vegan but I'll eat any meat if it's something I've never tried before (still waiting on iguana and quail). I have less a problem with flesh than milk but free food always tastes best.

I won't use evolution as reasoning for my diet, primarily because I really dig the laptop I'm sitting at, among other lovely modern weirdnesses that are as unnatural as all getout. I especially love germ theory and living past childbirth. ;D
