CHENNAI: In yet another move to help transgenders and bring them into the social mainstream, chief minister J
Jayalalithaa
on Wednesday announced a monthly
pension
of 1,000 for those above 40 years and living in abject poverty. The state government has allotted 1.17 crore for the scheme.
According to the proposed "Pension Scheme for
Destitute
Transgender", impoverished members of the community aged over 40 will be eligible for a monthly dole of 1,000. She said the scheme was aimed improve their social and financial status.

There are about 20,000 transgenders in Tamil Nadu and their numbers in the state electoral rolls stands at 2,175. Recently, the AIADMK government announced yet another scheme for economic empowerment of transgenders wherein bank loans up to 15 lakh with 25% subsidy are provided for income generation activities by transgender self-help groups.

But how to decide who comes under 'abject poverty'? But with just 20,000 in the state, may be it won't be a difficult task. This is a great deed from TM government. This is one good pension plan from them.
