Democrats' Platform Draft Gets Specific On LGBT Workplace Nondiscrimination Bill
The platform draft addresses both sexual orientation and gender identity in its support for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. It does not, as the ACLU had hoped, endorse a specific LGBT nondiscrimination bill focused on students. posted Aug 9, 2012 6:51pm EDT

In addition to the Democratic Party's draft platform language supporting marriage equality, reported earlier at BuzzFeed, BuzzFeed has obtained the draft language relating to workplace protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and other LGBT issues:
We know that putting America back to work is job one, and we are committed to ensuring Americans do not face employment discrimination. We support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act because people should not be fired based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
President Obama and the Democratic Party are committed to ensuring all Americans are treated fairly.

The Democratic Platform Drafting Committee agreed to add language supporting marriage equality to this year's party platform, the language of which has not previously been released but which BuzzFeed has obtained.
The draft language, shared today with committee members, is:
We support the right of all families to have equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law. We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.
We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.
