Title: Pros and Cons of changing gender marker on Drivers License
Post by: Rebecca Perez on August 26, 2012, 08:17:08 PM
I have to renew my driver's license. I am currently in transition from M2F, but due to the conservative little town my wife and I live in, I am currently presenting as male.

Since I have to compromise my identity, at least for a while longer, I really would like at least my license to say F. I have had FFS (including an orchiectomy so I can change my gender in CA legally) recently and pretty soon (3-6 months) it will be pretty obvious that I am not a male as the surgery results start to really settle in.

We would like to adopt in the future.

What are the pros and cons of changing my gender marker from M to F on my license and even my social security card?

Unless you want to keep your "male" identity I can not think of any reason to not change the gender marker on your DL.  For your SSN card you will need a letter from your doctor saying that you have had SRS.

There are no cons, it's all rainbows and lollipops. Life is really good when you don't have to lie anymore.

Not necessarily.  What it has to say is 'Irreversible genitalia surgery".  Mine was changed after my orchidectomy.  It all depends on the clerk you get.
