I had a rottie for a while, and I
They're very active dogs and go stir crazy if they don't get enough exercise.  Very loyal and defensive about their home.  Reasonably intelligent and trainable as well.

They do have a reputation of being an aggressive breed, and they can become so if the owner doesn't take responsibility and socialise the dog properly.

Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Pit Bulls and Malamutes are the most aggressive breeds.  They have to be socialized with people and other breeds.  Early obedience training is a must.

All of these breeds, when socialized and trained, are some of the most loyal and loving animals.  Even adopting an adult can be a joy.  Observe their temperament.  They should not be afraid of loud noises, sudden movements or aggressive with food.

If you are getting a puppy, go with a registered breeder.  Avoid puppy mills.  You need to see how the puppy is with its litter mates.

If you are adopting an adult dog, it should not be aggressive towards strangers.

And as always, spay or neuter.

this is really what i want in a dog. i want a dog that will be my best buddy and have enough energy to go for bike rides, rollerblading, and all sorts of adventures with me.

i'd never buy from a puppy mill! i could never support a place that treats animals with such cruelty

A great set of training manuals and DVD are available from Dr. Sophia Yin (http://drsophiayin.com/).  She is an animal behaviorist and can train any dog.
