When I first went out to buy some girl jeans I think I got to excited and ended up getting a couple pairs that fit really nice (for the first time in my life I'm not in a potato sack) but in reality, I think the rise is a bit to low - especially since I have such a long torso.  It seems like the jeans that I try on are either so low that they barely cover up my backside, or that the rise is so high that its only when I pull them up past my navel that they fit perfect in the but and thighs.

Any suggestions?  I like L.E.I. jeans except they rise is to low, LEE Riders seem to be to high, and others I've tried start to get baggy.  I don't want skin tight (have that with the low rise) but just something decent but not expensive.  Also trying to find some nice black pants for when I work, but that is difficult to find as well (for me). 

hmm, if you got the time, or know how, I recommend just making your own, I got sick of looking for jeans that fit right and had long enough legs, so I make my own.           Or do what my friend does, go on a trying everything on spree X_x

GAP has an awesome variety of jeans, as well as Lip Service. I also 2nd the making your own idea, if you can of course. I went to school for fashion so I sew garments all the time & I just ultimately decided to make my own or alter the ones I have to fit me as most of my jeans I bought look so weird in the hip & crotch area. Finding the perfect jean is a pain for most women though, all brands have different cuts so you have to keep trying until you find one that works.

I would suggest going to a good thrift store and trying on jeans there.

Try on a lot of jeans.

I'd love to make my own, but not sure I'm up to that, plus no sewing machine.  I have a little Singer hand stitch thing that I am trying to use to make a sarong, and thought about trying to take up some pants, but would not work on jeans.  The lady at Walmart told me that L.E.I. makes some jeans that aren't such low riders, but you have to order online.  I love the way L.E.I. feels, except they expose just a little to much on the back side.  I have no behind, so snug fitting jeans in the butt and thigh help maximize what little I have!

If I would take up the rise, I would rather do it from the crotch seems than taking off the waist.  Any thoughts or ideas on that for a newbie?  Might try it on a pair of pants.

The problem you are having is that high rise is almost exclusively paired with curvier fits. While straight fits are almost exclusively paired with low rise. A high rise with a straight fit is a hard ask, but they do exist.

You might also be able to compromise and go for a mid-rise with a straight fit. The "Perfect Boot" line at the GAP is that. I'd suggest going to a specialty jean store and telling them you need a high/mid rise with a straight fit and see what they come up with. Even if it's outside of what you want to spend, it will give you an idea of the kind of thing that will fit you.

If I remember right my hips felt too small and my belly too big for high rise pants.

If I were you, I would go shopping around a few thrift stores/goodwills. I buy all of my pants from goodwill and there are normally multiple pairs that are in my size (and practically new.. and cost $5!!). My favorite brand I've worn is levi... just don't get the low rise kind. Curvy jean 529 is on the label of the ones that I own that are higher than low rise but they don't go over my belly button either  ;)

I usually get the high-rise jeans and just trim them down with a pair of scissors. Obviously you can't cut through the zipper so that needs to be left intact and flipped down on the inside  :eusa_dance:

But seriously, I think it is hard to find good jeans these days. Seems what I like and what fits me well is out of fashion or something. Just a few years ago I could go into any store and find awesome jeans. Nowadays they are all tight at the knees, loose around the waist and otherwise fell like they're on backwards.

I guess it depends what you think of as high rise? Rises in general have shifted a lot from the original designations. The difference between high rise and low rise is like... 2 inches now. Generally high is 9 inches and up, mid is about 8-9 inches, and low is below 8 inches. In fashion jeans anyways.

Outside of retro stuff, vintage or lines marketed to older folks, you won't really find anything above a 9 1/2 inch rise in jeans. Which is why (for the folks who are pulling them up to their belly buttons)... it's probably a problem with the fit and not the rise.

Originally high rise meant over 12 inches. Which is like... crazy. And highly unflattering for anyone.

Maybe I ran into some bad ol' Goodwill highrise jeans that my momma bought for me.

The L.E.I.'s that I took back had a rise of around 8 - 8 1/2 I think, but I need about a 10.  I'll keep looking around.  Another thing, they have to be soft for me.  The Levi's I checked out didn't seem soft enough, but maybe I need to go to another store.  Money is a big problem though, which is why I usually stick to Walmart or thrift stores. 

Really interesting discussion and I'm enjoying your comments.  What about flare at the leg?  Will bell bottoms ever come back?  What about length?  The girls I see, though much younger than me, have their jeans about dragging the floor.

Just goes to show, low-rise never seem to fit - ME.

They seem even too small over my thighs, AND calves when slim-line cut. I.e. a size 36 (RE brand...) normal rise... fit me 100%, than I try low rise, boot cut (bell bottom!) are back in... are just a no-no - being far too tight IN MY HIPS... hello!
My impression is they are all cut for young school-girls with thin legs (thighs AND calves) and narrower hips than mine.
Now someone say I've no hips!? Another styling enigma?

As far as Levies go... 'full-curve' are for HUGH mama bottoms like... size 101 (is ther such?) than 'demi/medium-curve' still no good fit really, 'slight-curve' is a fit --- but a size 36 now would be a 31 with 30 too tight and 32 too loose. I have Levies size 28 hot pants fitting just fine also, meaning there sizes are totally different for what I can tell – and also changing from 'made in Mexico' ... to 'made in Israel' etc. etc. with one size waist size difference between the blue denim and the black... you can tell I'm not buying any.
I still have 501 32/30 and 508 32/32 and THAT... will have to do (being men's sizes ARE TOO SMALL by one size at present!)

I like Levi's 515's they fit pretty good. sits between the belly button and hips.  But I find the 515 lights out color pretty darn soft for a jean. Honestly they fit pretty good on me and they don't loose their shape after a few hours.
