Ok, I'm not really showing it because I don't like the picture but I got my first real guy haircut yesterday. I went in and told the gal that cuts my hair I was trans. I said I wanted a male haircut. Even did that thing they do around the ears. So awesome! (This is a unisex place. She knew several trans people so we had an interesting conversation.)

I've had a couple times where I think that people weren't sure enough whether I was male or female to "ma'am" me-- one guy who has ma'amed me in the past.

Awesome!  I'm going in for my new one on Wednesday (hopefully) -- I got a recommendation for a trans-friendly hairstylist (no mean feat in rural Florida),and I'm hoping he's working Wed.  I'm calling tomorrow to make the appointment.

I used to always have guy hair even when identifying as female, but I let it grow out about ten years ago.  Now that I've realized my true gender I want a haircut to match!

I think I've had many haircuts that guys could wear (including some kinds of moppy type things). But where they actually use a clipper around the ears-- if you look here you'll see they call this an "arch (http://www.ftmguide.org/haircuts.html (http://www.ftmguide.org/haircuts.html))-- never had anything like that before.

Forget stylists, go see a barber and get the hot lather/ straight razor treatment on the back of your neck!

Well I might when my current stylist leaves. I really like her and we have great discussions. I came out to her as trans which worked really well. She does a lot of guy's hair. OTOH I don't know if i would feel comfortable going to a barber unless s/he was trans friendly for such a thing since I don't pass.

She may do a lot of guys hair, but they're guys that go to a stylist, not a barber. A barber will get that wolf fur off the back of your neck. Much better! Hugs, Devlyn

It's true! The barber I went to was awesome and man does it feel weird to have your neck shaved!  :laugh:

I'm not on T (yet). I have no wolf hair. My male relatives were not really hairy, but this might still be useful should I start T.

I agree go to a real barber for the best guy hair cut.  That is what I did and simply ask for a relatively short cut and that is what I got. It was winter the first time so with my binder and long sleeve shirt I passed fairly well.  My voice is probably still too high. Back of the neck was cleaned up nicely.   In chatting with him, I told him a guy at the university cut it last time his comment was"it wasn't too bad of a job a little uneven".

I have heard many raves for a real barber cut. OTOH, I pass for seconds. Doesn't even matter if I talk or not. I think I'd feel very strange going to a barber at this point, unless it were a known trans friendly barber. There would be nothing at all to shave. I think she did a good job and I am very happy with it. Kind of helps my confidence.

Liking the cut you get is the most important part. I'll tell you, though, some of the things you hear in an old fashioned  barber shop can't be repeated here! Hugs, Devlyn

For some reason, the idea of shaving my neck hair makes me really squeamish.  I can't imagine that being an appealing sensation.

Me neither. Got the willies. But then I don't have long neck or body hair.

Anyway I have an autism thing about the buzzer, but she buzzed around my ears and I handled it. I have decided at some point I am going to have her buzz the sides of my hair (I've decided sort of...).  (I sound like a very young autistic boy right now. :))
