I'm 59. I've been FT for about three months but I've been 'out' for many years. I told my parents that I was female when was 13. Many years ago in a different word. I didn't know what I was and to be sure they didn't have a clue.

A lot has changed and I'm very grateful that I can help young men and young woman to accept themselves and to not have the torture that many of us oldies have had to deal with.

I say that with sorrow not with disrespect.

I have been delighted in how I have been accepted. Obviously at my age many people know me at a professional level and to 'suddenly' be female is a shock to them.
How have you found acceptance at a young age?

Started therapy and hormones at 24. Though, if I had kept things up as they were going, I would have been much older before I did anything. It's been just about 10 months since I started transitioning.

Acceptance was practically a non issue. Yes, I lost a few friends, but ive gained so many more. and I guess 19-20 is young, but believe me, I wish I did it even younger! I could have had a female high school experience. Oh well.

It is funny on how perspectives change, I once thought that being able to leave the house 'in drag' was an aim - I was about 19 at that time. Now I do not even own any male clothes, I have no perspective or even feeling (I'm searching for an adjective) in describing how normal I feel. I think until you accept yourself that you have no brain/self/body/ID communication.

I'm sorry if this takes the thread else where but I think it is pertinent. I'm on holidays at the moment and just catching up on daily stuff that gets out of hand.  So I booked myself in for some waxing, got my nails topped up, booked a hairdresser appointment: it wasn't until this afternoon that it dawned on me. I was living my life as me. All of my life I have been living in shadow.

I felt normal.

What a great realization that mustve been :) Thats nice!

For me, I started transition at 15, going to my GP to get the ball rolling etc, but with the hurdles in the NHS and my family struggling alot with it the first few years, I wasnt able to fully live "full time" as me untill I moved out at 18. Though this is still young, I too wish I could have started younger. I used to pester and pester my Mum at age 5,6,7 ish, to let me live as a boy. I had my hair at at age 8, and only wore boys clothes anyway. Oh, if only that had lead to beginning transition that early :p

And Ill be 22 in a couple months, if that makes any difference.

Some things just ARE - if you live long enough you'll get there no doubt.
Just wait and see - like it or not.

Note: Nobody wants to get old - yet nobody wants to die... hum.

Axx

I was watching an awful movie the overnight called 'Highlander' the premise was that some people could live for ever, not a new story line as we know.

I was in two minds.  I came down to no. Even if I was healthy and had all of my functions.

Sorry for getting off topic.

From my ticker you can see I've been on T a week, however I transitioned legally and socially around 4 years ago when I was 19. I wasn't going to let the gatekeepers stop me from living as a the man I should have been in the first place, I cannot fathom how miserable I would be now if I had continued living as a woman the whole time I'd been waiting for hormones.

and FT means "full time"  :)

No unfortunately. My family wouldnt allow any medical treatment aslong as I was living with them (but they are great and supportive now :) )
Also, I hit that dreaded wrong puberty early (age 9), so alot of the damage was done, so I was more focussed on just getting T. In the end, all the fighting and waiting was worth it :p

I'm pre-everything. My wife made me promise I wouldn't go full-time until my son graduates high school (he's a senior at the school where I work). That will put off my transition until 52 at the earliest.

Started hrt just before my 41st birthday and changed my name legally at 43 and I guess that is when I count it as being fulltime for me.

I was misgendered at birth, as a consequence I was forced to transition to a Male role at the tender age of 4 or 5 years old. The pressure (serious beatings) to keep the male role continued unabated until I turned 14 years old. What you know, by age 15 I had turned economically independent, and at 5:11 with a second degree black belt few people could intimidate. Nevertheless I continued to play the male role while maintaining an androgynous appearance until a few years ago when I DE-TRANSITION to my gender matching role :)

26 (therapy/HRT) or 27 (full time/SRS) depending how you're counting.

Kind of scared I waited too long to ever really be okay. Was pretty self-destructive pre-transition. Lots of scars and bad memories.

Better now, happier now. But still wish a lot of the things in my head weren't there.

Id say its all in the mind! I once worked at a pharmacy. An older man came in one day to pick up his prescription. Yes he looked "older" as in late 50's. He was in great shape. He was talking well, walking properly. He was in a tracksuit cause he went for a run at the gym. I looked at his file. He was 93!

My cousin's husband's sister... wtv the hell that is to me honestly looks like shes in her early 20s. She drinks. She smokes. Shes a size 0 (or 2 depends). She goes out. Shes parties HARD. Shes 37. I heard that I was like wtf?!?!?!

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER. I was also shocked to read ms Obrien is 58 (54 + 4 right?). No offence, you dont exactly look like a teen... but 58? I would never have guessed you look good!

Peky... your wtv age your mind says you are. Or if you wanna really get technical take the age on your license, your mind, your body. Add them all up and divide by 3. If you still dont like it divide by 2 :)

divided by 3 = 35 :) I can live with that.

I was 18/19 when I started officially, and had my GRS at 21. :)

Before that I had of course been sort of in hiding, dressing up secretly and actually travelling a few times to other countries to be myself. So I guess I started alot sooner that 18/19, unofficially.

Apparently I am not my chronological age, otherwise I probably wouldn't have been able to do the things I have done and am doing.  I attribute it to having no life prior to transition, being in que and abusing steroids for a short time, long enough to cause my own hormone production to shut down.  Also sun avoidance.  Sometimes I suspect I am a type of vampire.

I'm not going to say how old I am or when I transitioned, I think age is one of the popular dreams that many people believe in and belief causes compliance to that dream.  Refer to 'The Four Agreements'  Don Miguel Ruiz

What a timeline;
I was 30 when I got married, 32 when I started more fully to dress, 34 when I started HRT, 35 when I told my wife I was TS, 36 when I transitioned to full time, 37 when I de-transitioned, 38 when I went back onto HRT, 44 when I remarried and stopped HRT. 56 when I contemplated re-transitioning.
What a crazy life

42 realization that perhaps I can not go on in status quo. Start of Soy based HRT regimen and diet of calorie deprevation to get closer to the female body, mind you at this time I am 227lbs and semi-pro body builder at 6'1"
43 suicide attempt and immediate embrace of what shall come next.
44 whole wide world learns that I am in fact Not who I appear to be. Start of pharmaceutical HRT.
45 after 6 months of HRT I am fortunate to have ability to undergo FFS, my body now at 157lbs and height at 5'103/4", yep, I was amazed too, lol
presently 46, agency Model, still morphing into the perfection I have envisioned, perhaps asking a lot of my self, but as I have found out,

Lived my life as a boy since about 7 years old (although my mom would still sometimes buy me girl clothes, she let me pick out my own boy clothes too). Of course at that point I didn't care a lot about being a specific gender, I just lived how I felt it was right to. I played mainly with boys, all my toys were soldiers, toy guns, and video games.

15 realized no use in continuing to try being a real guy, so grew out my hair and lived as a girl. Hated it. Very uncomfortable in my body.

18 years old, cut my hair very short again, took my male name back. 8 days on T now. Enough of BSing myself with trying to be a girl. Feels great.

Full time since 17.

Androgen producing tumor led to "natural" transitioning (I naturally have a T level in the 300 range) until 31.

Now 31 years old getting a complete hysto and oophorectomy mid next month and starting T (surgical pain, manopause, and newly on a cismale dose of T. God bless my poor girlfriend, lol.)

Came out at 28, started HRT at 32 and went full time when it was thrust on me after a year or so. I say thrust on me because I was oblivious to how far I had come, and when I asked for the bathroom key at a local cafe, and I was handed the key to the woman's bathroom, I had a panic attack. Stupid, right? But I was so unprepared for it. I suppose my internal body-recognition software was failing to keep pace with the reality of my physical appearance.

Nothing was the same after that.

I'm completing my journey (at least this part of it) early next year.

I started low dose HRT while still in the navy at 27.  I had come out to a family member with still one year to serve at 26.  Yikes that was a hard year!

I joined the navy to sail the sea and see what I could see and ended up seeing me .... oh, also joined to suppress my feelings which worked for a few years.

But I went full time, name change, drivers license change etc just before 28.  SRS at 30.  46 now.  Time flys.

Came out to everyone about a week after I turned 25, and went full time (or as close to it as I could manage) pretty much instantaneously. Due to the gender clinic screwing up my information, though, I unfortunately didn't start hormones until I was halfway to 27. Ah well. All in the past now. ^^

I am from sri lanka and I knew about hormones when I was 15 but couldn't get it by my self and I knew if I came out to my parents by that time I would ended up in a mental institution. 90s' in sri lanka was like 60s' in west. So had to wait till I finish my studies and tried hormone by my self when I was 25 and after 8 months my mother found out and took me to a psychiatrist to cure me. Luckily for me the psychiatrist told my family there is nothing to cure but had to sopped the hormones with the all the negative reaction from my family and  the inquiries about my changing looks from my friends. After finishing my Master's went abroad and worked for another two more years and after returning home announced my family I will transition.  So finally I was able to start HRT properly when I am 28 and year after full time.  For my surprise once I started the transition I had the support of my family and all my friends. I never lost a single friend.

I know I had the support of everyone and I am having everything because I have completed my studies and built my career first, but not a single day goes by without thinking How would I have been looked if I started hormones when I was 15 or 16, specially when I hear about girls who transitioned in their teens.

Not quite sure at what point I would consider my transitioning starting. About 8 months ago I went FT, legal name change and all, and then a couple of weeks later HRT, but I lived open as mtf trans for over a year and a half before that. My sense of time is abysmal, but these estimates should be about right. To me it's very difficult to find a special time where I would consider I started transitioning, as to me, transitioning did not start with a singular event.

I officially came out, without bottling it back up again, when I was sixteen. I started hormones right after my eighteenth birthday though (not due to choosing to wait, but state laws).

Wow envy those ladies who get SRS so quickly after transitioning. The NHS is so bad I've had to do everything myself. ¬.¬

Started hormones age 21 went full time at age 22  9months later. Currently 26 Still no SRS on the cards, (Well not from the NHS I've got enough now tho I WILL have it by the end of next year.)

I'm kinda having difficulties to comprehend the whole "transitioning" term because we don't really have anything equivalent of it in Finnish. Not even a literal translation (and it would sound plain idiotic anyway).
But I'll try anyhow.

2011 (age 21) - Came out to friends and family, started using male name and started the examination process required to get a diagnosis.
2012 (age 22) - Diagnosed with F64.0, legal name change, HRT started in December 10th.
2013 (age 23) - Top surgery

Still to come is changing my social security number (nitpicking, the end of it) and hysterectomy.
I've been thinking about bottom surgery but it's such a huge operation that I don't want to have it unless I'm at least 99,999999...% sure about it. And currently, I'm not. Besides, I don't need a "traditional" cockles to be a man. :P

I'll save you the boring details, but also it's super unlikely that I'll start HRT before age 22.

Oh well.

Realized at age 4 that I wanted to be a girl, but out of fear started repressing it.

Started to seriously consider that I fell under the transgender umbrella at 29.

Started HRT at 32 (17 months ago) while still convincing myself that I was non-binary to avoid transition.  4 months later I was finally honest with myself and accepted that I did need to transition.

Started hair removal in December.

Started living part time in January (age 33). I'm now living as a female at all times outside of work.

Transitioning at work 12 days from now. :)

I've made the conscious decision to live as myself almost a year ago, and if you're nonbinary, that's about half of transition right there (for better and for worse). I wish I could say that there are more than two things I need to do to live as myself, but until society is willing to acknowledge that I exist, that to-do list will be short and somewhat superficial.

Anyways, the rest should come along in the next 2-4 years I'm sure.

I realized that I was trans when I was 32... was in therapy two months later, on HRT six months after that, and fully transitioned by 11 months after I figured it out. (I had GRS almost exactly 3 years after my instant of revelation.) So far I'm very happy I did it. :)

This is always an interesting question. The answer should be 19 (18, just barely), but a few weeks shy of my 21st I put it all on hold. Maybe only for six months but it didn't work out like that. So then it turned out to be about 29. But then... 26 when I decided it wouldn't stay on hold and I wanted to get a place far away from my home-town - something that caused major problems when I was transitioning originally - and that dragged it on a couple years or so... and the irony is, for the most part I had to suffer being stuck in that town anyway. All that messing around was for NOTHING. :(

I think better support when I was late teens would have made a MASSIVE difference. I can't imagine. I had alleged support from one person but actually they either were or were not utterly dishonest to me (depending on how you interpret it) - but it knocked my head in regardless. So much that I didn't tell anyone else for another eight years, roughly*. And that person dumped on me too eventually, but, whatever.

(*That isn't quite true. I told someone in London in 1994. I got blind drunk at some event and found myself wondering the streets aimlessly in the early hours [DON'T ASK!!]. This nice gay fella rescued me - took me for a coffee - and grilled me a bit. He kinda figured it out somehow - he eyed me squarely and said, what's the deal, you're not gay, but you sure aren't straight - so I admitted it. I said, well, I was getting a sex-change a while back but I sort-of stopped. But I had no idea who he was so it didn't seem to matter... just a random thing. BTW, he said no way would I be 'stopped' forever and gave me a wink. LOL. So if the guy with greenish hair from London, Sept '94, ever improbably happens to read this - never caught your name - hi! Never told that story in public before.)

Anyhow it was 15 years ago. I can't believe how old I am now. But that's a whole other can or worms for elsewhere, maybe. ;)

I "officially" came out around the age of 15-16 and started T a few months after I turned 18, then had top surgery shortly after. I'm a year on T right now, and October will be when I'm a year post op. Looking into a full hysterectomy and bottom surgery right now. I don't think I have a terribly complicated transition time line, but then again my memory is shoddy.

Sometimes it feels ridiculous to me when I consider how long I felt there was something different about me, that it took me so long to start dealing with the issue. I came out to myself at 32 and started therapy. I'm currently 33, still in therapy, and delaying HRT for the purpose of dealing with an underlying cardiac issue as well as preserving sperm for a "fruitful" marriage.

At the present, it looks like starting HRT will be my 34th birthday present to myself.

I came out to myself at about age 22, started self administered HRT with about 23 and finally had surgery with 26, that was 13 years ago, so @Janine - I think we are close to each other in respect of timeframe - didnt find a subforum or thread here with others in that timeframe. Would be cool to talk to others that transitioned that long ago at that age and how it feels like to now heading towards getting 40 - an age I never though I would reach when I was much younger. ;)

BTW, this should have been a poll, would be interesting to see the transition age spectrum here.

I started asking psychologists, doctors, etc. to transition when I was almost 18. I got to see the psychiatrist a bit before I turned 20, and he finally recommended me for HRT right before I turned 21. I've been on HRT ever since, and sadly my chest is still pretty male except for the sensitivity. Now I'm 22, and my time on HRT is below.

Edit: I think I forgot the most important detail. I transitioned (that is, applied my name change everywhere [still need to do my health insurance card], started dressing female, etc.) this summer, things solidifying with school starting again and coming out to my classmates two weeks ago.

Mine number was 43 :(
Should have been 16 :'(

So finally came out to myself 14 months ago, after years of knowing and denial.
Have had 13 months of laser with good results and started electro.

Started seeing a therapist 2 weeks ago, came out to her in the first session. It was very hard.
Saw my GP yesterday for blood work and a gender therapist referral next week again another hard step.
What next, blood work results and hrt, finally after all these years of pain.

I am amazed with the support so far from the therapist and GP.

Felt a bit anxious about the pace but what the heck.

I hate if that happens. Being age 16 and just not really getting the info. Eventhough it is out there, even though there are so many transpeople in the media (though not always examples one wants to follow). But 1996 when you were 16 - yes that was the time I transitioned. Indeed the information was limited online at that time, that is true. And I remember when I was in that time, the only real life place I knew some people who are in some way weird in a similar way than me was a drag queen dance club. Luckily I knew how to use online information at that time. With 16, that was harder - I think AOL and Compuserve and USENET were about the only internet thing back then ;) . So you became the girl that waited, Amelia - indeed - long did you wait but finally the doctor came, right :D - Love that theme ;)

Yep - I think EVERYONE here knows that feeling. I certainly do even though 23 was only 7 years after 16 when I really wanted that info as well. But drag queens and other "entertainers" - total turnoff.

Of course. Double meaning :) - I like that really - because basically this is what most or all of us are - girls (or boys) that waited - waited for the time that all other girls became young women. And waited and waited...

Out of curiousity - did Amelie Pond have an influence of your choice of real life name? Or is that a neat coincidence?

I never "came out" - didn't have to - everybody knew.

At 13 (1962) I started 'playing with hormone and started living part time at 14. At 15 a shrink was going to institutionalize me but I dodged the bullet and at 16 (1966) I was diagnosed Type VI by Dr. Benjamin. At 17 (1968) I officially started hormones but there was no 'legal' way to officially transition without SRS. That came in 1974 at the age of 24.

Geez that was a LONG time ago  ::)

I came out when I was 22, and was able to start hormones through informed consent and bypass the standard ~3 months of councilling. By this point I was quite sure I needed to transition and I wanted to start hormones asap. I'm 24 now, it's almost exactally 2 years after I initially started to come out. And while I'm quite passable now, I'm still in transition, I still need to get my laser done (money and planning issues FML, though most people don't know cause I have good makeup skills, and I'm currently stealth to my roomies) And I have the first part of my approval for SRS though I still could be waiting quite a while before I can actually get the surgery done. It's covered by my province here, ideally I'll win the lottery or something and be able to get it done in Thailand, though I'm not sure how realistic it is to hope for that.

I'm 47, I started my journey when I was 47, I transitioned HRT at 47, I am full time Female at 47, I will be 47 on my next birthday, I will be 47 when I pass. Most people mistake me for 41. Thanks for asking.

Great answer... I intend to hang around here at 39 for a *while*  ;)  HRT improves the skin, right?  RIGHT?!!  ;)

Every time I go to my endo he reckons I look younger, not seeing it myself but I'll take what I can get!

First time I was 23... this time 47... sheesh, where did the years go????

Interesting the effects of E Grace_C as it will make you look younger. :D

While I start now at 44, my age even as a male is always assumed as much younger, mid 30's by my team as I have kept myself very fit.
I wonder how much E will make me look even younger. From what I can tell I will do just fine.

Still I do wish I did this 20 years ago. :'(

I was mis-aged by others before the HRT and now people tell me that I am looking even younger than I used to. Before the HRT, people were usually giving me ~ 31, now some said that they would give me 28-29 years. I dunno if they are correct or not, but my skin definitely contributes to that. whereas "salt" in my rich hair does not :P.

I am starting in my late 20's. I feel like the day I first began being open with myself and and a very close friend of mine was when my transition began. I'm now out to the people who matter most to me in my life (all three of them, one of which is family, lol).
I'm pre-everything. I've started face laser, as well as epilating all of my body hair (and trying an at home IPL device for my chest/inner thighs, armpits, seems to work very well so far, but I have no idea if there's any permanence to the hair loss), and experimented with make up, and that's all so far. I've met other people in the local trans community by attending a conference, and a local support group. I've let go of my anxiety about presenting to be more male than I feel, and let myself just be who I am (if that makes any sense! lol).
I want to start hormones soon, and have a doctor and therapist who are both wholly supportive of my transition. It feels great to finally be myself. I feel like have a lot coming up in the future, not of it will be easy, but so far all of the little changes I've made have felt wonderful.

I am super nervous about changing how I present. So far, my nails have gotten a bit longer, and I've let my hair grow (though not styled at all), I plan on getting my ears pierced soon ^_^. I've also gone back to more of how I spoke/gestured/walked before I was gender policed by bullies during my childhood.

Lol, yeah, I stole some from my mom as well when I was a teen, but rare occasions.
So you are on HRT as long as I am - 1998 - I legally changed everything after SRS in 2000. What is it that you still need to do?

GRS and breast augmentation. I had been trying to get a referral since 2007 and at that time I was 5 years FT. Just starting to get referrals now (12 years FT).

Wow - what took them so long? For BA I guess they take time, I did not get a full insurance cover for it, but of course if I had paid myself in full I could have done it whenever I wanted, I assume. At least after GRS and legal change. But for GRS 12 years of FT until a refferal letter is steep - did you have bad luck with therapists? I was a bit on the fast side and was like 2 years out and about 15 months in therapy before I got my letters, but I think regular timeline here was 1 year therapy to hrt and then another to the SRS letters, if things went "normal".

Yes, I had a couple of nasty psychiatrists in London. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm now 13 years down the line and only just getting GRS referrals this year (not from London).

I expected it to be a 2 year transition, not a 13 year transition.

I guess I started my transition when I was probably 18. I can't quite remember. I had some set-backs in the beginning, but I finally went full-time when I was 22. I'm 28 now and loving life!

Yes. 2 years is way enough. I did that in 2 years and I already always wanted it to go faster.
13 years - in the UK, which I thought was a rather decent country that does not require people to be rich for SRS either...

The U.K sucks! and you do really need to be rich if you want to fast track your transition. I couldn't get a GRS referral from the London NHS GIC even though I was at that time about 5 or 6 years full time (that was 6 years ago). They would not provide an explanation as to why not?  In the end I had to get my referrals elsewhere. It was partially my fault (and my GP's) for sending me through that system.

The U.K is very backward when it comes to transition and they don't have a proper treatment program set up. For me it was very much a DIY job and still is. Over here GP's are often not familiar with Gender Dysphoria and they often don't see it as a real condition. My anti-androgens are not monitored and my GP refuses to provide prescriptions, so I have to get my anti-androgens from an outside source.

If I lived in America I would have probably had my surgery by the late 1980's which is when my original GD diagnosis was made.

:police: Gotta say this: Please be careful what you write there about your sources for HRT, maybe edit it ...?

This sounds horrible indeed - so much waiting. GPs here will also rarely give HT, but there are gender therapists who usually will do so at least after visiting them for a year and being fulltime for a year - not nice, but at least not 5 years or more. And usually it is faster anyways. I got my HT after some weeks and SRS letter after a bit over a year. Its not that this costs them anything, so they give it. Some are a bit busy but you only have to go there a few times to get your letters. I think I was there like 6-10 times. Therapy itself is partially disconnected from it too - so you go to a therapist parallel to going to the psychiatrist. Those appointments are more frequent, but the therapist cannot prescribe anything.

I haven't mentioned HRT? only anti-androgens. I can get HRT on prescription no problem. I also used to get my anti-androgens on prescription but my present GP wants a letter of authority from an endo every year and I don't have an endo? and all the endo's I contact won't see someone who has Gender Dysphoria, so it's a catch 22 situation.

I transitioned at 35, for all intents and purposes. There are still several steps I intend to take, but they are invisible to presentation and/or the public. I have heard from plenty of long term women that one is never "done" with transition, so barring that experience myself I'll probably not claim it either unless I have a very different hindsight in fifteen years or so.

I came out and started living as male (stealth) when I was 15. I've changed all of my documents except for the sex on my birth certificate and started testosterone at 18. I'm booked in to get my chest surgery next year when I am 19 :) No idea when the lower surgery will happen tho!

I came out at 19. I took my first hormones from a friend (BC). At 20 I started to be medically supervised. Full time 3 months into HRT, but before even taking my first estrogen pills I would wear eyeliner and mascara out (in my late teens). Yup, I was one of those people  ;D

Started at 15 I think. Got on T around 16 and a half but a very limited dose. I was probably 18 when I finally got on a full dose. Dunno why my endo went so slow but whatever lol. Is it sad that I can hardly remember the age I was when I finally got on a full dose considering I'm only 19 now? LOL

Wow, all the later replies now - 15, 16, 17,.... soooo amazing! :) Congrats that you all are making it so early. I get the impression that the average time to start this has dropped at least by 5-10 years or more. I was a youngster with 23 back then, I knew one who was 21 and I heard rumours about some teenagers managing to get their parents to do something earlier, though they never showed in any support groups.

I'm on HRT now and presenting occasionally at 29.

I kind of feel an urgency to just get it done before 30 though.  I constantly worry that I'm too old to be really passable and all these people telling me I look fine are just saying that because they don't want to hurt my feelings. :'(

I started HRT almost a year and a half ago while I was 47.  I wish I would have been able to start earlier in life,in my late teens, but it wasn't the right time or place.  But as my friends tell me, it happened when it was suppose to happen and I honestly agree with them.

I was 22 when I started HRT and at about the same time began to present full time as a woman.  I was even read as female and cat called a few times *sigh* I enjoyed being read female so much...wish it could've lasted.  outside circumstances forced me to stop HRT and stop living outwardly as a woman...blah blah blah...i've told the story in other posts here.

Now I'm 23 and I'm starting again.  Hehe, it's never too late to start again, guys and gals! =)
