I've cut back on the amount of meat I consume, and I make it a point to eat a meatless meal at least once a week. I believe a widely varied diet is the best.

I've only been vegetarian for a few months. I stopped eating meat because while I was homeless and eating at shelters, a lot of the meat was undercooked and made people sick. Then after not eating it for a while I kinda just didn't like it anymore...

I was veggie for over 30 years, but since being on estrogen I am compelled to eat fish often. It's very weird, and I look forward to it going away again. I'm not comfortable being a fish-eater, but if I don't, after about 3 days I can't think about anything else :(.

Been a vegetarian for a few years now. At least five I'd say. There was a time I ate meat without realising it. Brushed my teeth real good after that. :P
I'd only eat meat if I was living off the grid/living off the land and really needed to.

I'm a pescatarian as well. I gave up meat 6 years ago, for moral reasons. I didn't agree with how animals were treated in Factory Farms. Plus, I didn't eat a lot of meat before that, I just didn't like it. I really only ate Chicken. I LOVE Seafood though, haha.

Vegetarian for some months, don't remember the exact date or anything. My father's a vegetarian so it's not such a far-out option for me. I don't like the way animals are treated in the food industry, it's horrible. Eating out can be boring, but luckily the pizza place near me has this delicious Italian pizza with mozzarella, parmesan, zucchini and aubergine on it so at least that's great. All the hamburger places (McDonalds, Burger King, Swedish-only burger chain Max) use the same vegetarian patty for their veggie burgers, which is a bit boring since it isn't very tasty.
I can recommend tempeh, it's a kind of meat substitute made out of soy beans and is absolutely delicious.

In the states I was pescatarian. But, meat in Japan has much less hormones and crap in it, so I don't feel nearly as grossed out eating meat here. Besides, it would be nearly impossible to get completely away from meat in a Japanese diet.

Same reasoning here, I stopped eating meat (besides fish) a year and a half ago. It wasn't hard to do as it was hard on my digestive system, I didn't eat it much, wanted to try to challenge myself and the treatment of animals really pushed me to stop. One day I'd like to be vegan . . one day.

I eat limited amounts of meat with only consuming meat once a week to every couple of weeks. It's just expensive and I'm not all that fond of cooking it. If I do eat meat, it's chicken [though today I'm indulging in a steak]. I have no moral issues as I feel everything has some sort of soul/essence including plants [which it's proven that they 'talk' to each other]. I just think the killing should be done respectfully the same when it comes to harvesting plants or using them.

im NOT a vegatarian at all. I just like meat too much.
But, I do understand it sucks while eating out.
I sort of have same thing with fastfood that I get more and more picky.
I cant eat mc donnal food, everything taste horrible for me, I have tried to force myself to like it because its practical being outside in a group getting hungry and then your like "lets just got at bugerking or mc donnal" but compared to how much I normally love meat, things like that makes me kinda sick.

I was a vegetarian as a teen growing up in NY. However, when I moved to texas I made myself sick by not eating "a balanced diet', that was back in the days when iceberg lettuce was considered a good vegetable in Texas. My dorm had then and fries - everything fried and mostly meat. At least today, I get only organic grass fed beef - and watching it raised I know it has not had anything unnatural put in it. Actually I want to go back to being a vegetarian. I know this sounds lame, but the only thing stopping me is that I really don't know how to cook vegetarian main courses. If someone cooked for me - I'd give up meat.
My family and I watched "forks over knives" and believe, after that film I am more than ready to give up meat. I'm just lazy with learning new recipes.

I've been a vegetarian since sixteen years ago, but I try not to be too uptight about it. I'll eat meat if it's an animal I've never tasted, and once every few years i eat steak (I love it raw even though that's dangerous), and sometimes I do gumbo even though it makes me sick every time. At home I'm mostly vegan but I'm a freegan/opportunivore and I try not to turn down things with dairy and eggs if they drop out of the sky. I try to be normal and I don't spend much extra on premade vegan stuff.
In real life though I do tend not to tell anybody. The responses to that info are often mean.

Nah, if anything I am anti-grain. I eat lots of fruit and veg with a little meat, but rarely does a grain or a sugar or flour enter my body.
I try and buy clean meats, like wild fish as opposed to factory farmed.

If you just seal the edges of steaks then it's perfectly safe and although I've never tried it I'd guess it wouldn't change it that much. Because it's a slab of meat the bacteria can't get all the way through like it can in burgers and sausages and other products that have been minced and squashed back together. Might be worth trying next time.
I'm a meat-eater through and through. I can't imagine a world without meat, I very rarely go a day without eating some form of meat. Vegetables alone just don't do it for me, and bacon. Life without bacon would be pointless.

I am still an omnivore but slowly becoming more vegitarian as well. The only meat I can eat on a consistant basis is white meat chicken these days. I think its very hormonal, changing the way things taste in my mind, but a salad with a really fatty dressing and butter croutons seems more appetizing these days.
My gf's dietary habits are changing me as well, she makes really delicious looking vegitarian food x3
By vegitarian means no meat, not the kind that stays away from cheese and other animal byproducts. As long as it wasn't actually a physical chunk of the animal xD
I used to get chicken cutlet parm, not I get Gnocci with tomato or alfredo sauce. Its delicious, and leaves you with the same consistancy of meat while it being potato pasta. Alfredos tyle is like the best tasting mac n cheese ever. In fact I am getting some tonight since I will be at work a few extra hours.

Alex what do you mean about sealing the edges? I think if I got free range stuff from non-kosher slaughterhouses I might could be okay on the ethical end and if I only did it once in awhile (and didn't add grease and salt) I could be okay on the physical health end. Direct safety concerns would be nice to resolve.
Part of my issue is not just that I have a bleeding heart soft spot for mammals, but that most of my blood relatives are fat and diabetic and have heart disease. A lot of them live to be very old, but a lot of them don't, and none of them are pretty along the way. :P

I don't know the proper terms for cooking (I'm no chef but my parents are...) but because bacteria is only going to be on the outside of a solid lump of meat like steak (doesn't include poultry or pork though) as long as the edges are cooked at a high temperature to kill off any bacteria that might be on them it'll be perfectly safe to eat. I've never tried it, or eating it raw, but I can't imagine just slapping it on a griddle (a frying pan in a domestic kitchen I suppose) for a few seconds would make any difference to the steak in general apart from making it safer to eat. I hope that makes sense.

As long as you sear the outsides your pretty much good when it comes to steak. Obviously if you chop beef up you have to cook it well, rare hamburgers are dangerous.
I like my steaks medium, just the right amount of tasty juicyness and the right bite to it. Anything rare-medium rare is to soft and gooey for me.

Im vegetarian, practically vegan. I stopped eating meat for a variety of reason (poultry and fish included). The number one reason for me was not necessarily the morality behind eating meat (I dont like factory farms as much as any other vegetarian) but rather the health reasons. They inject cows with a bunch of hormones. The meat is dirty, not cared for properly. What the hell, and were then putting that in our bodies? Have you seen how unnatural chickens look after all those hormones are injected into them? And what about all those farmed fish... so much mercury in them! For my own sake, I stay away from eating anything that once lived, and I think twice about eating other things that had at one point come form animal.
I had been vegetarian for some 15 or so years mostly because of the reasons Tessa mentioned above ^
What made me want to start eating meat again was the continual "better than you" attitude I saw in the veg/vegan community. God I got so sick of it I didn't even want to be in any way associated with it. I know not everyone is like that but I just seemed to run into it over and over and over. Evey time I would go to areas where there happened to be a lot of veg people it was just overwhelming. My viewpoint was always that it was a personal choice what you ate. It wasn't a "lifestyle", I never thought eating honey was an utter tragedy, I wore leather, I never told anyone else I was "better" than them because I didn't eat animals and no matter what anyone says I do not believe we can all save the earth if everyone went to a veg diet.
I still rarely eat meat and red meat does not agree with me at all, but I'm not calling myself a vegetarian anymore. I won't eat meat out in restaurants unless I know for sure it's organic/free range/not injected with crap. And of course anything I eat at home is absolutely 100% organic/free range/not injected with crap.

This is my problem almost exactly. I still don't want to eat meat (I rarely do but if I have to it's usually sushi... it's just so darn tasty!) but that 'holier than thou' attitude just drives me up the wall. I think of other vegetarians as being like my drunken brother. Sure I'm glad he's out there, I just don't always want to readily acknowledge I know him, haha! I mean, if someone attacks them I'll defend, but if they're just out there being arrogant, I suddenly have better things to busy myself with. I have a hard time admitting to strangers I'm veg because of that attitude. My other problem, though, is the constant teasing from carnivores. The incessant 'oh, well, you can't eat that, it was cooked in the same building as a cow, har har'. My co workers are always picking fun, but if we ever have a day where we don't get a lunch break and order pizza, someone always says, "Order a cheese too!" for me. It's kinda nice, and I know they care/respect my decisions (well, most of them), but I pay for it with the constant teasing ::)

I'm vegan. No meat. No milk. No egg. (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstorage.canalblog.com%2F91%2F61%2F214958%2F23555840.gif&hash=c4c2839b050d7ce761d75a91c6f6a37550f28ab6)
I think buying meat is not diferent from torturing a human baby all his life and killing him.

What made me want to start eating meat again was the continual "better than you" attitude I saw in the veg/vegan community.
As people here have already pointed out, that goes both ways. Some non-veggies seem to pick fights, poke fun, etc. I was vegetarian for 3 years and I'm glad for the experience. I tried a lot of great foods that I still eat that I might not otherwise have tried if I hadn't needed to expand my choices. But I can relate. One time I was just chatting at lunch in college and was having some kind of croissant stuffed with spinach. I mentioned that spinach had the highest protein of any vegetable. I just thought it was an interesting bit of trivia. I hadn't even mentioned that I was vegetarian and I certainly wasn't at all preachy about it or trying to convert anyone. Some guy took it upon himself to be preachy about meat-eating and started "schooling" me about amino acids or some such and why I needed to eat meat to be healthy. ::)
I remember it was also during that 3-year time when I was at a fairly progressive party. The host was trying to be vegetarian-friendly by having two different soups available: one vege and one with chicken and he was asking people which they wanted. One guy who was VERY preachy about it said "I won't eat anything with eyes." Remember, I was vegetarian at the time. I said, totally deadpan serious and playing dumb to the hilt, "I'm pretty sure they cut their heads off. There are no eyes in that chicken", referring to the soup. Oh, the evil eye he shot me...

I had been vegetarian for some 15 or so years mostly because of the reasons Tessa mentioned above ^

I'm currently in the South and have been my most successful at being Vegan here! Who knew! We happen to have a couple of really great vegan restaurants run and frequented by mainly punk / Anarchist folk--my peeps! I've cooked in both places and learned a ton that I've brought home and incorporated into my daily life over the past 8 years.
It's just like anything else; some folks will be dicks and have a holier-than-thou attitude, no matter what their pet cause.

In all those years I was veg the most attitude I got was from other veg/vegan people. Like I always took fish oil caps for the omegas and I would continually get crap from other veg's saying I wasn't veg if I took a fish oil supplement. Or they would feel "safe" to talk openly around me and then just let loose with the meat-eater hatred and how they're all killing the planet, blah blah blah. I would usually just suddenly have to go if I got talking with someone like that. I did get poked fun of by meat eaters in those years but I never got the feeling that there was a hostility behind it (it was more like they had the attitude, "well that's your problem ... more meat for me to eat huzah!"). And when I moved from Southern California I thought I'd be in big trouble going to a more rural area but everyone was cool. It was only when I'd go to specific veg places, health conventions, etc (Portland was a main offender of this!) that I'd feel that attitude again.

I am a vegetarian. I am told that I should be vegan. That vegetarianism is pointless. I eat diary but no animal products besides. I have tried rice milk and like it but I'm too stubborn in my ways to fully give milk up. The person who said I should be vegan instead eats meat. I have no judgements on people who eat meat or fish. I don't mind, it's their choice. My mate was worried about eating meat in front of me. I thought why worry? It's my views I am not offended and won't impose anything on anyone. I do repeat myself unintentionally.

I wish I was a Vegeta! I think I'd rather be him than a female(joking), only cause he is the only awesome guy I can think of in this world. (on my computer anyway, this appears as "anyone else a vegeta . . ." and me being a Dragonball Z fan, Vegeta being my favorite, o well, maybe someone will get this!)
Yes, I am a vegetarian though. I am one because I care about animals and could never think of eating one. I make sure to buy products that include animal byproducts, such as milk, from sources that treat the animals well.

I rather be Videl, she is really really cool! And a stronger fighter than her dad. If she wasn't bound by human limitations she would be insanely powerful to.
She went up against fighters that beat the snot out of Goku, and somehow managed to look cool and last longer than most humans. Even if she did no damage.
I idolized her as a kid O-o

I'm actually not a bacontarian :) . I'm paleo, which tends to bring to mind a high-meat diet. That's not quite accurate though meat is certainly allowed. It's more about replacing bizarre, processed, modern foods with their more natural traditional forms. A big part is actually avoiding unhealthy carbohydrates, which often get overlooked as a health hazard, and replacing them with healthy fats for energy, and fat often gets overly demonized (according to paleo folks, anyway). Occasionally it even overlaps with vegetarian diets which made me thought you guys might like to try this recipe. You can even be both vegetarian & paleo and I personally know some people doing that.

And there are probably a lot more vegetarian recipes in this list.

To be completely honest, I need to qualify that I'm paleo-ish. I don't abide by it completely strictly. I find that dairy in many forms doesn't seem to cause me any problems and I love too many dairy products (heavy cream, ice cream, cheese) to give it up. I don't do any milk though and I have been doing more raw milk products, though they're expensive so not too much. I even cheat with gluten (usually from wheat-based products) occasionally in small amounts. It seems my body can handle it in small amounts. If I over do it, I practically end up in a miserable gluten coma for half a day.

I'm not a vegetarian but I do try and do vegetarian meals (I mean no dairy but probably not strictly vegan) every couple weeks. Afaik there are no sources of omega 3s that work quite like fish oil. There is flax seed oil but it is processed in the body differently. But since it is from fish it is not strictly speaking vegetarian. I think some fish are smarter than chickens.
:-) But anyway, I think you have to make your choices. I think if you are eating lots of high fat cheese it probably defeats the health benefits of being a vegetarian but there are people who do it just because they don't want to eat meat. I think there would be many health benefits to vegetarian over vegan, as you would have an easier time with certain nutrients.
I don't like any "milks" (soy, almond, etc.) and I hate soy pretty much. I don't think that I'd do well as a vegetarian, but the health benefits are really great.

i'm not vegetarian, but have no problems eating only vegetarian food. i'm pretty good at cooking, but can't cook meat right, so when i make food it usually ends up vegetarian. i even bake vegetarian pizza that beats most of the ones with meat.
i don't have any philosophy when it comes to food other than not kill more than i intend to eat. but i can't eat animal fat, not because i don't like it, but my body seems intent on rejecting it for some reason. very inconvenient when trying to eat meat, because so many factory animals seem to only have fat on their bodies. the animals we keep at my parents' farm are so much tastier, since they get to walk around freely before it's time to butcher them.

I do similar things sometimes. The Morning Star brand is really good. When I lived with my sister meals were heard because I was a vegetarian (but eat seafood) and she's allergic to seafood so I'd get the Morning Star Meatless Meatballs and make Spaghetti and Meatballs sometimes.

I don't know what I'd do without Morning Star Farms Bacon... Even when I ate meat I preferred it over real bacon. I put it on a bagel with a chunk of scrambled egg and it's heaven, haha!
