Title: The prayer for the 18 year old
Post by: Annah on October 22, 2012, 06:02:34 PM
Just to clarify some things (i wished i saw the thread before it was locked).

I was the one who ask for prayer for the 18 year old boy who was kicked out of his house.

1. His family is not religious. They are bigots...but they do not prescribe to any religion (so we can kinda drop the whole Christianity is evil bit)

2. Not only am I asking for prayer, I am also working my @$$ off getting him into a stable environment. The one thing that gets my feathers in a knotted bunch is when someone acts all pious, holier than thou, or "smart" by saying "How is prayer going to help him? Do something constructive.

Let me explain to the naysayers what I am doing "other than praying" (because dear Lord...prayer is so useless /sarcasm

I spent all night Saturday into Sunday looking for places to house this young man. He doesn't belong to the church. I believe he is an atheist as is his family.  We spent a lot of time helping him look and we also are helping him look for work.

We've also helped him and showered him with concern and kindness because he was suicidal.

So please, drop the whole melodramatic "Christians are worthless" act. It doesn't work with me. Bring the soapbox to someone else and realize I am trying to help a young man who is homeless and stop acting like a post modern secular humanitarian discussing the dreadful irresponsibility of Church base help.

Thank you.

I'm driving back up to Harrisburg to meet up with him. He's a United States citizen but he is Romanian. I am very glad he got his citizenship as a child because i fear this situation would have been worse.

We got the LGBT Community Center of Harrisburg in on this to help us. It was one of the Board of Directors who have been helping us get the young man back on track. He came to our service Sunday morning (we did not ask him to) and our congregation took him in very admirably.

He's been having issues with the shelters because while some of these shelters brings in gay men they are turning him away because of how he is dressed. They call it wearing girls clothes but he's very unisex in his wardrobe. So I had to correct the Shelter manager about what is crossdressing and what is called unisex. I still got on the man's case for harassing crossdressers. This is a non religious shelter.

We did give him a hotel room for a couple nights and a faith based shelter is helping out too.

Good job Annah, this is where the Christian rubber meets the road, and I'm serious and not being facetious. You'll have my prayers for both your sakes, be steadfast and don't take any cant's and No's!

Annah,

Is he is out of high school yet? (My step son did not graduate high school till he was 19 so I know that's a possability) This will be an issue later but is not the immediate need.

You are both in my prayers also.

All I can say is wow.
Wow to the vitriol that the original thread generated.  I could say more, but it wouldn't be constructive.
Wow to Annah for putting her faith in action.  You have my prayers, and I hope that the young person in question finds his feet so to speak.  What you are doing is faith in action, and that is to be commended.

Taking this as a cue from Annah, there is an aspect to this that we shouldn't miss that can make a difference in our own lives and that is the business of looking beyond our own sometimes all consuming self absorbing issues and take the initiative to reach out to meet the needs of someone else. That is where life's real blessings, a sense of purpose and personal satisfaction lies. Atta Girl Annah!
