Title: hello
Post by: sweet gwendolyn on October 25, 2012, 07:01:19 PM
Hello,

I'm not totally sure in what capacity I'm here, kind of as an ally, I guess.  I'm 37 and have always been active in GLBT issues (taking my first stand in 1986 Alabama when I was 11 without any adult guidance on the issue- things just didn't seem right to me).

In all of my efforts, I've always tried to take up for the trans community in GLBT groups because I felt like they tended to get overlooked or swept under the rug (more in the past than in the present, but I'm not happy to see it still happening).  This especially came up when I was on the steering committee for a GLBT faculty and staff association at a major US university and I lobbied a lot to get trans issues acknowledged and addressed when helping to set the organization up.

I'm not really sure how I'd define myself which is probably why I'm not a huge fan of labels, but I also understand the value of being able to explain where you're coming from with just a few words.  Basically, I am a female who is potentially attracted to women and men and transexuals/intersex of all varieties- personality really is everything to me.

Anyway, my situation is that I am recovering from a very long illness.  I became too sick to work in Feb 2011, but am finally recovering enough to look for constructive things to do with the down time.  I've been active on a message board for other people suffering from the same illness, and it's been very meaningful to me.  I have a lot of love for the trans community and would like to give support to others, and I found this place when I started searching.

I hope that that was not too rambly.   ;)
