...Not strictly "trans" related, but hey we're all part of the LGBTQxyz soup, right?

I'm happy for it.

This is the most valid way to achieve our goals - a majority vote of the people.
Second best, legislation through elected representatives.

And now it is Oregon's turn.

There's a law somewhere that says a marriage in any state must be recognized in all states.

:)

I think some states actually have laws that say they do not have to recognize same sex marriages from other states.

It will take two initiative in Oregon.

1. To repeal the state constitution, which was changed to state that marriage is between a man and a woman.

2. To legalize SS marriage.

I wouldn't think OR would have to repeal the entire constitution...just the one part, or an amendment?

I find it hard to believe that a state as liberal as Oregon would have such a conservative law. That is ridiculous.

In 2004, 57% of the electorate in Oregon supported Ballot Measure 36, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

If we respect the right of the people of Washington State, to determine state law through a referendum, then we must also acknowledge the same process in Oregon.

Oregonians should work to replace the law.

I respect every ones right to choose. But, being from Oregon originally, it just seems a bit unusual for them. Just my opinion, no judgement cast.

It's all about educating people to see a loving couple AS a loving couple...the gender of this very personal relationship doesn't matter.

In 10 years weed and same-sex marriage will be legal through the Empire. WE just need to be patient and wait until the early baby boomers "retire" from good.

I just read that this year, 2012, there were more Hispanic, Asian American, and African American babies born in the USA than white babies. If this year the win was 3:2, 18 years from now it is goring to be whoop ass for the old conservatives.

I'm actually really surprised that Oregon hasn't passed SS marriage or "measure 80." And that Washington did, seems backwards to most of us Oregonians, makes me want to hop across the river.

Go Washington !!

BRB, off to cross the border to get high and gay-married.

In all seriousness I'm so relieved that the marriage amendment passed. That means our efforts in Oregon are more likely to succeed.

Well you had 3 vote for it Washington, Maine and Maryland.  And one state voted against making a law/amendment prohibiting it (Minnesota).  So, that's coast@coast, and that's nice.

But, as nice as it is to have people vote it in, it still gets adjudicated at some point (lots of points).  And just because it's voted, does not mean it's going to happen (see: California votes to restrict it).  So the SC is going to get cases this year, and that's pretty much going to end the problem.  You'll have votes for it, legislation for it, and court cases favoring (or at least saying that the state can't stop it).

But it's still going to be a patchwork because of Federalism.  I don't see Mississippi, or Kansas doing it anytime soon.

But DOMA is about due for a repeal.  And then there will be the next wave of court cases when people who live in Mississippi or Kansas get married somewhere else and return home.  That's the problem that DOMA was intended to shortstop - the issue of comity between the states.  Last time we had a fight about that it resulted in a Civil War.
