Title: I Don't Like How You Handle My Bananas
Post by: V M on November 14, 2012, 04:59:30 AM
The supermarket where I live opened a self checkout area and I am glad because the checkers and baggers are not well trained and tend to throw your goods about bruising the fruits and vegetables and the baggers will package food with household cleaning items  :P

Maybe I am a bit bias, but when I was a checker we were grilled as to how to properly handle and bag stuff

Anyway, I find myself going to the self checkout area more and more often... Not because it is any faster, but because I'm tired of the ill handling of my groceries

Also, some checkers purposefully use wrong pronouns

Does anyone else go through this kinda thing?

*Disclaimer*

There are a few good checkers and I will get in their line when I see them

I don't know why you're complaining, the frozen turkey is supposed to go on top of the potato chips! Hugs, Devlyn

I don't know why you're complaining, the bread takes up less room that way.
@V M: I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but your banana is covered with brown spots. Hugs, Devlyn

For some strange reason, it's now considerably cheaper and a lot less hassel to buy our stuff, from one of the local supermarkets, we prefer ASDA at the moment then have it delivered.

They tend to deliver it in large trays, which they bring to the front door. Very few things are ever stacked. We take the stuff, leaving it in the porch, sign the guy's computer pad and off he goes. Largely because of the cost of transport, it saves us a fortune, at least 15 bucks a time.

There is some loss of selection of some things. Fresh bread from example. The British don't know how to make bread. It's generally a sort of gloop with thickening agents added, then steamed until it develops the appearance of bread. Finally, it's run, briefly, through a toasting oven to give it a crust. As you can imagine, it's disgusting.

There is, as far as I know, only one place to buy reasonably eatable bread, but it's some distance away. I don't really want to know how it's made in that place.

The best bread in this area, by a long streach, is had in France. But it's a two hour ferry journey, (not counting the two more hours because of British customs checks). The French also do rather good meat, especially chicken. But you need to go on market day and even that can be hit or miss. (Sadly, the French don't cook too well. Their stuff is either tasteless colour or gooey and greesy. Very greesy).

The best fish by far is had in Spain, but that takes all day just to get there. Flying, sadly, is out. The companies, apparently, don't like passengers taking food on board, incase they can't sell you their own, over priced what-ever-they-call-it.

My wife still goes into town, mainly to meet her friends. But rarely spends much. She says there is a market there, but these days, only sells cheap trinkets, toys, sweets and cheap clothes.

I always place my items on the conveyer in the order that I want them sacked... it seems to work.

I never use the self-checkout... I'm a bit of a Luddite.

Other than packing the bags too heavy we don't have too many problems.  "Most" of the checkers do a pretty good job of picking through the groceries and picking like items to put in the same bag.

I always ask them to pack the light, due to physical issues I have problems with heavy bags.  Some of the baggers are good about it, but a few just ignore my request and the bags end up so heavy you need a body builder to lift them.

One of my gripes too! I'd rather make a sandwich with flat slices rather than try to flatten out pieces shaped like figure eights after someone sets a few canned goods on top of the loaf.

The checkers and baggers here are pretty good...except when it comes to respect.

When you use the "club card" your name appears on the receipt...they always used my male name when my card had it, but now they look, see the name, and say "thank you" but without my name. I've told a couple of them that my name *is* Beth, but they still don't use it.

Next time I'm there I'll mention it to the manager.

Walmart is usually very good about how they bag the groceries.  When it comes to bread, they generally will put it in with the eggs, on top.  And then place the bag on the top of the bag carousel.  As a general rule they pack light.

Most of the cashiers, if not all are very friendly.  And if one is on duty, I go to her.  We kid around.

The only time I have my name mention is if I go to Safeway.  They have a club card, with your name on it.  Most of the cashiers say, "Thank You, Mrs. <old last name>." All of the cashiers call me by my first name and two give me a hug everytime the see me.  You tend to get to know them very well over the years, baggers have a high turnover, but the cashiers seem to stay for years.

The cashiers at the market I go to call me sir when I am presenting male, and ma'am when presenting female. They know I am the same person as they ask about my son. The baggers are mostly highschool kids, so they don't say too much.

Most of the checkers and baggers are nice people  :)   But you can really tell the difference in the people who have been well trained in their jobs from the folks that are obviously not hardly trained at all

I'm always nice to them and will give helpful hints here and there but mostly I'll look for an experienced checker that I know does a good job or just do the self check out

I'm quicker, I pay attention to what I'm doing and I don't have to deal with anyone's ill handling or damaged goods

So...everyone likes their bananas handled gently, and not like a piece of meat? Is that what I'm getting from this thread?

And we like experienced handlers, or we'll just do it ourselves?

:-D

But,but, don't bruised bananas make better banana bread? A good cup of coffee with a nice warm slice of banana bread smothered with butter.  I can smell it now,it just makes the mouth water.

Ah the aroma as it wafts across the kitchen,as it passes into the living room. As the palate awaits in longing for that tasty morsel that delights in the morning sunshine. (I really wish that dog gone timer would go off already)  :P

(Just teasing)
