New alert over gender bending chemicals (http://www.thisislondon.com/til/jsp/modules/Article/print.jsp?itemId=18914596)

A new health alert over chemicals used in make-up, shampoo and soaps is issued today. Experts say products containing the chemicals - called phthalates - could cause women to give birth to boys with female characteristics. Their research found shrunken genitals and less masculine behaviour in babies.

Not surprising. Many chemicals used in the cosmetic industry aren't good for you, particularly skin lotions and sunscreens.
Personally, I don't use any shampoos, creams, or toothpastes.

Gee, I always thought people with shrunken or deformed genitals chose to be that way.

The chemical influence on ->-bleeped-<- is nothing new. After WWII, many new chemicals and drugs came into use which have since been proven to be related to sex and gender of children of pregnant women. This has been controversial for decades now and we are still finding and identifying such drugs and chemicals which were at one time considered "safe" and I imagine many new drugs approved by FDA will in the future prove to fall into this catagory.
I can remember studies about such things and the news they made in the late 50's and beyond. Just another consiquence of humans attempting to place themselves above nature and it's consiquences. We are no longer a pure product of nature or it's natural environment, rather a consiquence of our own actions.

Quoteyou had to expect that, sooner or later, that'd make somebody wonder how you kept your teeth clean... ?
I wash my mouth out with soap.
Or at least, I would, if I could find a soap without "Sodium Laureth Sulfate" or some other chemical that sounds like it hasn't been in existence for much over 100 years.
Currently, I just wash my mouth out with water, and avoid sugary/acidic foods.

Actually sea salt and water is a pretty good teeth cleaner

Actually, it has been my experience that salt water is highly effective as a mildly abraseivly cleaning solution for minor cuts and abrashions on the inside of lips, cheeks and gums, as well as having a cleansing effect on teeth. It does seem to have some effect on healing properties also. Sea salt has a more pleasing taste in my opinion and is my preference even on food.
side note, it is also good for minor external cuts and abrasions.

*wince*
I may have to try sea salt.
*shiver*
My teeth are not in good shape (as in disintegrating) so I doubt it will be a pleasant experience but *shrug*.
Thank you for the ideas.

"My teeth are not in good shape (as in disintegrating)"
Hope you take care of that 4 years. I can relate to it though as many years ago I had an incident which I refer to as attributable to my "bad hearing".
Someone told me to Shut Up and I interpeted it to mean Stand Up, so I did and caught a bar stool across the face. It took more then 5 grand at the price of the time to have extensive Cap and Perminant Bridges installed. I can remember how having so many broken teeth made me feel about myself, not good.
I had that work modified last year and done up with smaller teeth with more feminine rounded edges as the old work was beginning to be just that ... old. It's so nice to have an attactive smile, even if the rest of you is questionable.

Ouch poor Terri.
I attribute my teeth either to genetics (fathers teeth were also in um, BAD shape), or the Fernley,NV water... You know that that nice fresh clean water that will kill your goldfish *sigh* ... that stuff.
Interestingly my teeth don't bother me that much nor am I that concerned with their appearance really. Sure a nice smile would be nice but GAH so much else is more pressing to me. Interestingly Mum and Dad vote for teeth first.

Hey 4 years, Fernley NV? Thats where I moved here from. I lived down by the juction to Hwy 50 Alt toward Fallon. Was there for 7 years or so, when I first moved there, the phone book was a full 5 pages and you didn't have to show ID at the market when you wrote a check and at the 76 station, you pumped your gas and went inside to pay for it afterwards. Loved that town, never locked my doors, even when gone for the weekend and the cars often sat out in the car port with windows down and keys in the ignition when we were gone. Even my Stingray, and never a worry about it. Not sure about the water though, We had ours delivered in the 5 gallon jugs and used a cooler dispenser. A lot of the water in rural Nevada though is somewhat hard, in some places I've lived around there, like Silverpeak, the water was totally undrinkable and had to be brought in by truck and distributed to the homes by Foot MIneral, The mining operation every one there works for or Parsons Construction, the trucking outfit that also worked for Foot Mineral. Foot Mineral mined the salts from the water there for it's chemicals. I still got an Aunt and her son, my cousin living in Carson City.
If I could get a decent job in the Reno area of Nevada I'd definately consider going back.

I also found this list of American products. I checked to see if it was different and it was so I am posting it also:
http://www.nottoopretty.org/goodbad.htm
American Products
Phthalates are virtually everywhere. Deodorants, car seats, hair spray, IV bags, perfume, vinyl flooring, wallpaper, and siding all contain phthalates. Some of the leading beauty manufactures use phthalates in their products -- such as Pantene Pro V "Healthy Hold" and Aqua Net hair sprays, Arrid and Degree deodorants, many fragrances including Poison by Christian Dior and Coty's Healing Garden contain phthalates, as well as Cover Girl, Sally Hansen and Maybelline (L'Oreal) nail polishes. However, for every ubiquitous use, there are readily available alternatives that are already in use.
The chart outlines products that were tested for phthalates. Because of lax FDA labeling rules, we cannot know if there 5, 50 or 500 more beauty products that contain unlabeled quantities of phthalates. So just because you don't see your favorite product on the list doesn't necessarily mean it's phthalate free. We encourage you to check with the manufacturer.

Hey 4 years, Fernley NV?...
I've many fond memories of the Reno area. Reno was the town we went to from when I was a child of 2 to one year before high school.

I wanted to know what Phythalates were so here is part of a page and Link to a page that tells more about it.

PHTHALATES
What are phthalates?
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to soften and increase the flexibility of plastic and vinyl. They are used in hundreds of consumer products.
Phthalates are used in cosmetics and personal care products, including perfume, hair spray, soap, shampoo, nail polish, and skin moisturizers. They are used in consumer products such as flexible plastic and vinyl toys, shower curtains, wallpaper, vinyl miniblinds, food packaging, and plastic wrap.
Phthalates are also used in wood finishes, detergents, adhesives, plastic plumbing pipes, lubricants, medical tubing and fluid bags, solvents, insecticides, medical devices, building materials, and vinyl flooring.
Phthalates had been used to make pacifiers, soft rattles, and teethers, but at the request of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, U.S. manufacturers have not used phthalates in those products since 1999.
How might I be exposed to phthalates?
You can be exposed to low levels of phthalates through air, water, or food. You can be exposed to phthalates if you use cosmetics, personal care products, cleaning products, or other plastic and vinyl products that contain them.
Exposure to low levels of phthalates may come from eating food packaged in plastic that contains phthalates, or breathing dust in rooms with vinyl miniblinds, wallpaper, or recently installed flooring that contain phthalates. You could be exposed by drinking water that contains phthalates, though it is not known how common that is.
