Julianne Kramer

Transgender advocacy group Agender has written an open letter to the family, friends and colleagues of killed chopper pilot Julianne Kramer, urging them to respect her gender identity.

The 52-year-old chief pilot and instructor at Wakatipu Aero Club was killed last week when the Robinson 22 helicopter she was piloting crashed into Criffel Range in the Cardrona Valley.

While she was transgender and identified as female, police and subsequently media have referred to her as male at the request of her family.

Wait... can someone clear this up for me? Was she a FtM? Or the other way around? I dunno if I should be outraged or not since I can't make heads or tails of the situation.

She was an MtF who wished her true gender to be acknowledged at her death but her family have rejected her last wishes and refer to her as male.

This, sadly is not uncommon. I look upon it as one of the most profound insults a family can ever give to a family member who they have never loved.

I am not Maori and she was not. But she loved her land. I hope this covers it and my apologies to my Maori Sisters if it is incorrect or disrespectful to anyone but the family concerned.

*jaw drop* OH THAT IS LOW! I don't care how much you don't like it. You respect the wishes of the dead! What they did is just not on!

Sorry for the rage. As a fellow Kiwi and part Maori this hits me even worse. Especially since I could risk that too.

I'm sorry if my Maori does not convey my rage and please forgive me if I have desecrated your language. But I find this particular scenario, that I have seen before and it is so bloody cruel. We at Susan's have had people we know and love buried under their male names by families that I could only say cursed and hated them.

The total insult.

I'll stop there otherwise I will have to ban myself.

Go in Peace

It's ok. You're not in the wrong. I'm more outraged at them for doing that to her. What I ment was since I'm of their culture too the fact they did that is hitting home a lot worse than if it was in another country.
