Title: Who wears a watch, and why?

I was at a meeting on Friday and during a break someone mentioned they no longer wore a watch, I think came from one of the woman saying that another girls watch looked cute.
The a number of people piped up saying they had given up wearing watches and that they took the time from their phone.
So who does wear a watch and is it as jewellery or as a time piece?
I do, but I might stop and wear a pretty bracelet instead.

I wear bracelets, watches are kinda obsolete. Save for the survival ones but those are never fashionable ;)

I wear a watch mostly so I know what time it is. When I am at home, I usually don't though. My phone stays in my purse at work and oftentimes, it is easier for me to look at my wrist than one of the clocks at work.

For health reason I need to stay hydrated throughout the day so I time my water drinking. For this reason I like to know the time.
Watches are better. Reaching to check my phone can be distracting to whomever I interact with. A casual glance at my wrist is much less obtrusive.

I wear a watch nearly every day when I'm working, but both my jobs really require some bit of timeliness. During the week I drive a school bus and can't be looking at my phone and on the weekend (and sometimes during the week) I photograph weddings and need to keep a close eye on exactly what time it is so judge the flow of events. I love watches and even have a small collection of pocket watches and wrist time pieces. I think it's a shave they are loosing favor as they can also be a truly unique piece of expression along with something practical. But the majority of people I know simply just look at their phone for the time. Which when I was taking a silver smithing class the same subject came up since we needed to time something and in a class of 30 only two of us had watches on! How sad ...

Always. I feel naked without one. I depend on it for my work, and since I rarely carry my cellphone with me, it's my only timekeeping device.

I don't wear a watch. I just use my phone or iPod for it. I don't wear a watch because I don't like the idea of getting a sun tan line around my wrist and the feeling of something around my wrist drives me crazy. I could do pocket watches, but that's just another thing I have to keep track of and would have the risk of losing.

I stopped wearing a watch after I transitioned, years ago. I find watches bulky and uncomfortable. If I need the time away from a PC, I'll use the phone. I stare at a screen for most of the day with the time in the corner. However, I used to be neurotic about needing to know the time.

I have 4 middle size (meaning large women) mechanical watches. Steel one is kind of sporty (Invicta), an Omega gold one, kind of dressy, I inherited from my mother, a square black Seiko I like to wear with my bitching dresses, and a steel citizen that has a mother of pearl face, which is my favorite and I wear it almost every day.
This thread reminds me of how dependent in technology we have become. How many people (civilians) know how to get an azimut and navigate with a map?

I used to wear a watch until the probability of transitioning came along...always associated it with "manliness" and "tan line" ;) , so decided that was one of the many elements I could discard.
Women's watches are usually very tiny, so they don't fit my wrists and the print is *SO* small I can't even read the things.
Cell phone time for me...although I have played with the idea of having a watch fob on the pants, I've always liked those. (I prefer the round dial anyways...)

I can do map and compass navigating! Was in the .mil, but they didn't teach me, I learned by trail and errrrr... ;) The secret is to properly utilize the mag var (which is printed on the map).

I can navigate via map and compass as well. My dad made sure we knew how to do this for "just in case". I was never in the military because I can't join due to partial paralysis. I just have a dad who likes to make sure we know what's going in the outside world.
As for being dependent on technology, watches are technology. Some even do more than my iPod or any MP3 player I've ever had, which just gets me. I generally don't like watches or caring anything around that tells the time because I don't like the idea of being dependent on time unless I'm teaching.

I keep thinking of getting one, but ..meh. Anything I wear on arms or fingers end up annoying me or getting caught on something. I use my phone for telling time and reminding me of just about anything during the day.

I think the reason that everyone went to the phones - well at least the early adopters - was that for the first time it was possible to get everyone synced up. So that (at last, cheers!) 12:00 noon was the same for everybody - not something that happened in this kind of fuzzy window of sort of five minuteish thing. And here BART, MUNI also pull the same time signal that all the phone use. So we all know now if the 1:59 bus waited, or took off early. Everyone agrees to the time on your phone. People DON'T agree to the time on watches anymore.
I never wore watches (too California vain, hated the tan line), but I usually carried on on me.
I have what is (or at least was, once upon a time) a nurses watch, which reads upside down. It's on a lanyard around my neck. I use it for shows. Only shows (because I don't have my phone on me, I'M WORKING)

I wear a watch so I know what time it is... I don't always have my mobile phone with me, and I don't want to keep reaching into my pocket or bag to tell the time even when I have.
Actually make that one of two watches, his and hers.

I think that the issue of wearing a watch can largely be divided by the generation in which you grew up. The younger crowd often prefers to get the time from their phones/mobile devices, while the older generation largely still hangs on to their watches.
As a stay at home wife, I don't carry a phone. When I worked in a clinical environment, a watch was a required piece of my daily wear. Additionally, while a phone may offer convenience when you have one on you, I've always strictly prohibited staff carrying phones in the office, making a watch a pretty important accessory.
Beyond that, I've always believed that part of effective "passing" was having as many visual gender indicators as possible. Earrings, rings, bracelets and clothes all serve to denote our gender identity, and a ladies watch is another unmistakeable part of that presentation.

Dick got robbed. Granted we didn't get the flying cars - but my phone - not much bigger than my wrist, also has a small music library, a camera, Worldwide navigation that pretty darn accurate, a calendar, phone book, maps, a calculator, access to the internet and I think games (its' not like I play, but I think my kid did), and it's a phone, messaging device and e-mailer - it does not have a two-way radio, the old one did and I just didn't use it enough.

A funny observation I read somewhere recently: People used to carry pocket watches to get the time, and wrist watches replaced them. Cell phones have replaced wrist watches, and tend to be carried ... in a pocket! Circle of life right there...

GendrKweer, that is exactly what I keep thinking. People say pocket watches are stupid, but they use the phone to check the time.
I wear a watch. I prefer to look at my digital numbers than the analog clocks in the middle of school. Plus, taking a phone out of my pocket whenever I need to check the time or use my stopwatch is too time consuming, especially when I'm sitting down.
Plus, my school doesn't allow phones to be used. :P

I think Angie got it right, as a generational thing. I am from the wrist watch generation. Used to have a cell phone, my wife has one. She has the Ipod, but she still wears a wrist watch. A flick of the wrist & you have the time, I would be lost without the watch.

I got a watch when I was in elementary school and wore it on daily basis until we figured out I'm allergic to nickel, thanks to that watch. Got a nice rash from it.
These days I check the time from my cell or ask someone if I'm being lazy. :D And I think watch would just get it my way when I'm working. Construction sites, yay.

I love watches - sometimes they can be used to either add a masculine or feminine touch depending on your choice.
Just got a new watch this month and I am totally loving it. I really missed having a watch on my arm and this one is the most fem one that I've ever had :D

I just had this conversation with someone not that long ago, they noticed I was wearing a watch and I had my cell phone in it's holster on my belt. They wanted to know why I still wore a watch when I had a smart phone.
For me, it's a simple matter of respect depending on the situation. When I'm at work or in a social environment I don't want to be seen as "checking my phone" constantly, seeming to be bored with what I'm doing IE: checking for text messages or emails or something like that. I'm still (though I'm only in my 30's) "old school" when it comes to "toys" at the dinner table I guess. If I have guests over or I'm out with people my time is their time, not conversing on the phone so for just checking the time I'll fall back to a watch.
I also consider a watch to be more or less a fashion item (bracelet for males essentially) more then utilitairian purposes. I stopped using a digital watch (though I still have one) after switching to portable devices back in the early 00's but I've always had my nice watches for social / meetings type gatherings.
When I'm at home or not expecting socialness I'll just check my phone. I also switch wrists to help keep the "farmers tan" down to a minimum.

just a few days ago i asked a friend why she wears a watch to which she replied:
my job has me talking to a lot of people but i also have a strict schedule. i tend to get caught up in conversation so if i can occasionally glance at my watch i can easily say something like "o wow, its time for me to run i've got a 12:30 2 towns over! it was great talking with you, i'll see you next week." she said its always awkward to pull out cellphone, which requires a flick of the wrist to light up/unlock the screen.
she also loves her watch because its super cute.
as for me i prefer to pull out my phone. its no smartphone so i think people understand i'm simply checking the time. i tend to ignore time and whenever i need to do something at a specific time i'll program a reminder/alert in my phone. i enjoy time more when i'm not keeping track of it.

I wear a watch. I used to on and off but then I didn't for ages as mine broke. I finally got another one and when I don't wear it I feel like a part of me is missing haha. I still use my phone to check the time but most of the time I check it on my watch. I don't know why I wear one really, part of me just likes to wear something on my wrists and a part of me needs to know the time every 5 minutes.

I wear a watch when I'm not at work -- my watch is leather and my job involves a lot of washing up so I don't think it would be too happy. I get totally lost if I can't find out the time, and my phone has a habit of running out of battery whenever I need it (stupid smartphones...) so if I don't have a watch on I find myself walking around trying to find a clock somewhere. They're just practical, and phones aren't. Phones get lost/stolen/run out of battery, much less is likely to happen to something that's tied to your wrist. And they can look awesome.

It is mechanical and you can see the little cogs whirring. Unfortunately I broke it recently because I used to find that watch quite hypnotic.
I have replaced with with this, but it hasn't arrived yet so I don't know what it looks like.

Incidentally, a wrist watch was considered a female item until WWI when pocket watches were just too impractical for trenches.

Incidentally, a wrist watch was considered a female item until WWI when pocket watches were just too impractical for trenches.

I wear a Minny mouse watch that I got from Disney world. It's girly is why I wear it.

That new watch came, it's very pretty - it has a glass back so you can see all the way through it.
On the down side, the mechanism doesn't work and the minute hand fell off - so I'm giving it back.

I always wore a watch after seeing a photo of Paul McCartney wearing one. He looked cool, lets face it, was so sexy.
I got out of the habit when I was nursing and scratched a patient once.

Yeah, I think I'd consider that something of a flaw.

Yes to the question I do wear a watch (not all days), the latest one I wear was gifted to me by my daughter, and it has a cute band and clock face. It's also a small reminder of my daughter's acceptance, they get me feminine items now for gifts... and it's appreciated, so yes I wear it and feel good about it.

I stopped wearing a watch in 2002 when I left my last real job. Then smart watches came along, and the promise of all that fun tech on my wrist was too much for me to ignore. I enjoy being a geek girl. I do make sure it has a blingy band, though.

Never used to, just fold stand having one on my wrist. Carried a pocket watch for a long time but cell phone made that redundant. Have worn a Fitbit the last couple years though. I have a few different color bands and some jewelry styles of bands for it so it's not boring.

I wore a watch from when I was a kid until about a decade ago. My watchband broke and I decided I really didn't need a replacement. I rarely do anything on time schedule and I'm usually near a clock, anyway. I might buy one again for fashion purposes only, but that's it.
I don't carry a cell phone with me most of the time, either. I just take it if I really need one, which is rare.

Always hated watches, they where always such macho things that your parents used to buy.
So now I never wear em. Use to give me a rash too hahaha

Day to day I wear a Citizens dive watch. My wife gave it to me as a 40th birthday present- now i'm 50. Due to an error in ordering I received the ladies version which is less bulky than the mens. I have worn it and love it ever since 2009. Im so glad I ended up with the ladies version!

When I go out anywhere, I wear a watch, because I like knowing the time of day. I got an Invicta self-winding watch for that purpose.

i have never wore a watch but when i decided at the end of 2014 to lose weight i was exercising a lot and walking. Somewhere are around 3 years ago i decided to get a fitbit to make sure i was making at least 10,000 steps a day and it just stuck from there.
I found a cute rose gold metal band for it and never take it off now. when i started 2014 was over 240lbs probably closer to the 250lbs , im now at 147lbs and never want to go back. The fitbit is a great motivator and now never take it off except to shower.
I never liked watches but love the fitbit

Great to hear that the fitbit helps! I routinely weigh myself with a balance beam scale.

I personally like watches a lot, and I wear one any time I go somewhere. I prefer analog to digital just because they look better imo. I'm also partial to skeleton watches. These are my two favorite watches I own:

Under no circumstances should anyone wear two watches at the same time, as you may be thought of as a two-timer. :)

I quit wearing a watch when I got my first cell phone. Why would I need two places where I can look at the time?

For me not wearing a watch is almost like going commando! I am on my third smart watch (currently a Samsung Gear 2)
I use the watch for many more things than just checking time. I got it feminized by buying a different wrist band, and the watch face shows more feminine motives (currently cherry blossom with slowly falling pedals).
I monitor my sleep, my heart rate, my daily movement and calorie burs and calorie usage, my stress level and other things with my watch. Once in a while I check even the time on it.
The watch is always with me, my cellphone is not!

I haven't worn a watch for ten years at least.
There are no clocks on the wall in my home.
Partly because I get the time from my computer when at work, and partly because a clock on the wall is a constant reminder of the rat race. I dislike clocks and phones and other reminders of the "human world".
I've got a good internal clock of my own, fairly accurate at figuring quater-hour, half-hours, an hour just on how it "feels", and I know the time of day by the shade of the sky/clouds or attitude of the sun/shadows where I live. I can wake up without an alarm to the minute of a routine.
I do wear a watch while diving though, for safety reasons.
