1:24PM EST November 27. 2012 - In advance of a "Drag Stars at Sea" cruise on the Carnival Glory next week, passengers received notification drag costumes will not be allowed in public areas of the ship.

This has sparked a controversy that has drag queens and supporters crying foul on websites including America Blog, although the gay-owned travel agency that arranged the cruise is defending the cruise line.

The week-long eastern Caribbean cruise, set to embark Miami on Dec. 2, has been billed by organizer Al and Chuck Travel as the largest gathering of drag queens at sea, with more than 30 drag stars from RuPaul's Drag Race set to perform.

An eight-day cruise with nearly 40 stars of RuPaul's Drag Race seems like it should be a fun event. However, Carnival Cruise Lines has turned it into a public relations nightmare that hints at homophobia.

A letter from Carnival sent yesterday to passengers booked on the special cruise was shared with Elsewhere. The company tells passengers that it expects "all guests to recognize that minors are onboard and, refrain from engaging in inappropriate conduct in public areas." It also tells passengers that "guests are not allowed to dress in drag for the performances or in public areas at any time during the cruise." Passengers are also informed that "any guest who violates our policies and/or whose behavior affects the comfort and enjoyment of other guests, will be disembarked at their own expense and no refund will be given."

That's brilliant.  "Let's have a cruise with drag entertainment, sell it like crazy to those gays and then not let them dress in drag!"  What a great marketing idea.

And if there were pirates on board, I imagine a few of them would be borderline on that rule, lol.

Carnival's 'no costume rule' sparks controversy

A cruise company's "no costume rule" has raised eyebrows less than a week before a ship on which cast members of "RuPaul's Drag Race" are slated to perform is set to depart for the Caribbean.

Alexis Mateo, JuJuBee, Rebecca Glasscock, Michelle Visage and more than 30 other drag queens and performers are scheduled to take part in the Drag Stars at Sea: Caribbean Adventure – Revenge of the Wench Cruise on the Carnival Glory that is scheduled to set sail from Miami on Dec. 2. The ship will dock in the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands before returning to Florida on Dec. 9.

Passengers received an "urgent notice" signed by Vicky Rey, vice president of guest services for Carnival Cruise Lines, on Monday that reminded them of the policy.

Well, if there is "inappropriate conduct" (which I'm thinking is of a sexual nature, given the mention of minors), then ban that.

make 'em walk the plank! Hoist 'em by mizzenmast and barnacle them in the foofenwizzit!
