Title: Transgender themed songs?
Post by: NightAngel on December 03, 2012, 09:20:30 PM
Hi everyone,  :icon_wave:

Transgender themed songs?

I'd like to hear more songs with transgender themes, or that even just mention it in passing.

It's not easy finding any songs related to this theme, at least from the classic song catalogs.

Help me find some, please.

"Lola" by the Kinks

There's not many songs I think, but Lola stands out. Never even knew what it was about until a few years ago, when I was more "political."

QuoteI met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola [LP version:
Coca-cola]
C-o-l-a cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
L-o-l-a Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Well I'm not the worlds most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/k/kinks/lola_20079021.html (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/k/kinks/lola_20079021.html) ]
Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy wont you come home with me
Well I'm not the worlds most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me

Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Well I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man

Well I'm not the worlds most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

There's also "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed...interesting backstory, if you Wikipedia it...

QuoteHolly came from Miami, F-L-A
Hitchhiked her way across the U-S-A
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs
Then he was a she
She says hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
She say hey babe, take a walk on the wild side

Candy came from out on the island
In the back room she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was givin' head
She says hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
She says hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the colored girls sing
Doot, doo doot, doo doot, doo doot doo doot
Doot, doo doot, doo doot, doo doot doo doot

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New york city's the place where
They said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
They said hey joe, take a walk on the wild side

Sugar plum fairies came and hit the streets
Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the apollo
You should have seen him go go go
They said hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side
They said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side

Jackie is just speedin' away
Thought she was james dean for a day
Then i guess she had to crash
Valium would've helped that bash
She said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
She said hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the colored girls sing
Doot, doo doot, doo doot, doo doot doo doot
Doot, doo doot, doo doot, doo doot doo doot

Against Me! has a song from their upcoming album called Transgender Dysphoria Blues.  There's not a studio version available yet, but you can find plenty of live videos on YouTube. I'm pretty sure their entire next album is going to be trans themed.

I've always wondered about "Somebody told me" by the Killers:

That I had in February of last year

So I know the song isn't about being transgender but for my theme song it was Evanescence's  "Bring Me to Life"  I always saw it as my real female self singing to the masculine shell I had been wearing.

Some songs from one of my favorite bands, Garbage, that mention something Trans like are "Bleed Like Me" and "Androgyny"

"Bleed Like Me" (one of my favorite songs)
Quote
Chris is all dressed up and acting coy
Painted like a brand new Christmas toy
He's trying to figure out if he's a girl or he's a boy
He says:
Hey baby can you bleed like me?
C'mon baby can you bleed like me?

My vote goes to Candy Says, by the Velvet Underground ... the story of Candy Darling, transsexual Warhol Superstar. The song was written by Lou Reed who also mentions her in Walk On The Wild Side - 'Candy came from out on the Island / In the barroom she was everybody's darling.'

Here's a link: The Velvet Underground - Candy Says (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEVyf6y_-Y4#)

Candy says is a much sadder, more moving - and more beautiful - song than 'Wild Side' (which I love, too, but it's really just trashy fun) and the lyrics are as good a description of dysphoria as have ever been out into song - all the more so since they were written by a guy who wasn't TS himself. I can recognise so much of this song in my own experience and I'm sure lots of other girls here will too:

Candy says, I've come to hate my body
and all that it requires in this world
Candy says, I'd like to know completely
what all the souls discretely talk about

I'm gonna watch the blue birds fly
over my shoulder
I'm gonna watch them pass me by
maybe when im older, what do you think I'd see
if I could walk away from me

Candy says, I hate the quiet places
that cause the smallest taste of what will be
Candy says, I hate the big decisions that cause endless revisions
in my mind

I'm gonna watch the blue birds fly
over my shoulder
I'm gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I'm older what do you think I'd see
if i could walk away from me

I was just watching a documentary the other day on YouTube about Candy and the other members of Warhol's little gang. Very Interesting. Candy was beautiful, sad that she died so young.

Perhaps not a very famous one, but Josephine by Terrorvision, a fairly minor English band from the 90s, comes to mind. I always thought it was super-catchy growing up without really understanding or thinking about the lyrics. I listened to it again for the first time in ages recently only to realise that... um... it's about a guy meeting someone he used to know under the name of Joe, finding that she is now Josephine, a trans woman, and falling for her. :D

I had a friend called Joe,
When friends were hard to find.
He had a restless soul,
And something on his mind.

One day I went away,
And then returned to the scene,
Not to find restless Joe, no,
But to find Josephine.

I asked her what her name was
She said Joe had left the city
I asked her what her name was
She said... They call me Josephine.
Josephine. Josephine.

It took a while to click,
But then I got the gist.
The girl by my side (by my side),
Was the guy I've missed (was the guy I've missed).

I took her for a beer,
To talk about old times,
Just to find the beer, dear,
Was now a sweet white wine.

I asked her what her name was
She said Joe had left the city
I asked her what her name was
She said they call me Josephine.
Josephine. Josephine. Josephine.

So we talked all night,
And I just can't pretend,
Although I lost old Joe, yo,
I got a new girlfriend (I got a new girlfriend).

I asked her what her name was
She said Joe had left the city
I asked her what her name was
She said they call me Josephine.

Also, while it's hard to argue that it's not more about defying gender expectations and being yourself than it is actively identifying as the opposite gender given the subject matter of the story, I always thought Reflection from Disney's Mulan was kind of an unofficial trans anthem in its lyrics.

Look at me.
I will never pass for a perfect bride,
or a perfect daughter.
Can it be I'm not meant to play this part?

Now I see
that if I were truly to be myself.
I would break my family's heart.

Who is that girl I see staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don't know?
Somehow I cannot hide who I am though I've tried.
When will my reflection show who I am inside?

"Cherry Lips" by Garbage is a total TG song :)

http://www.lyrics.com/cherry-lips-go-baby-go-lyrics-garbage.html (http://www.lyrics.com/cherry-lips-go-baby-go-lyrics-garbage.html)

She gave you everything she had
But she was young and dumb
She'd just turned twenty-one
She didn't care to hang around
So when the >-bleeped-< came down
Why she was nowhere to be found
This life can turn a good girl bad
She was the sweetest thing
That you had ever seen

You're such a delicate boy
In the hysterical realm
Of an emotional landslide
In physical terms

With your cherry lips and golden curls
You could make grown men gasp
When you'd go walking past them
In your hot pants and high heels
They could not believe
That such a body was for real
It seemed like rainbows would appear
Whenever you came near the clouds would disappear
Because you looked just like a girl
Your baby blues would flash
And suddenly a spell was cast

You hold a candle in your heart
You shine the light on hidden parts
You make the whole world want to dance
You bought yourself a second chance

Go Baby Go Go
We're right behind you
Go baby Go Go
Yeah we're looking at you
Go baby Go GO
Aw we're right behind you
Go Baby
Go Baby
Yeah we're looking at you
Go

Fake It By Seether

This song is about pretending to be someone you aren't. Essentially it's like a pre-transition song.

Who's to know if your soul will fade at all
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the way
Yeah

[Chorus:]
Good god you're coming up with reasons
Good god you're dragging it out
Good god it's the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
So follow me down
And just fake it if you're out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong here
Fake it if you feel like infection
Woah you're such a f***** hypocrite

And you should know that the lies won't hide your flaws
No sense in hiding all of yours
You gave up on your dreams along the way
Yeah

[Chorus]

Whoah
Whoah

I can fake with the best of anyone
I can fake with the best of em all
I can fake with the best of anyone
I can fake it all

Who's to know if your soul will fade at all
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the way
Yeah

[Chorus]

Fake it if you're out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong here
Fake it if you feel like infection
Woah you're such a f****** hypocrite

There are so many hints in the lyrics to quite a few of their songs, part of the reason their music has got me through many hard times over the years!

Same here. I hate I've never gotten to see them in concert.  I was hoping they would come somewhat close to where I live in the "Not Your Kind of People." tour but no such luck.  I'll have to see what the 2013 USA part of the tour offers.

A little morose in places but worth a listen, the highlights for me are Got Monsters and Silver Candy

It was! My parents were friends with her while she was a part of Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie here, before she left for America to join Garbage. I actually didn't make the connection until years later despite being quite fond of Garbage. I remembered my parents' friend called Shirley who babysat us sometimes, but I was so young at the time (maybe three or four) and had forgotten most everything else about her besides her name. Then one day a Garbage video was on the music channels here:

Mum: Oh, that's Shirley's band, right?
Me: Huh? Wait... THAT'S SHIRLEY?!

Bit of a shock. :'D I don't know if my parents are still in touch with her. I think my dad might be.

Somebody's already named it, but I like to think of "Reflection" from Mulan as a good song to refer to people if they want a sense of what the transgender experience is like. It works all the better since it wasn't intended to be about transgenderism per se.

Surprised nobody mentioned Namoli Brennett yet - particularly We Belong.  It starts:

"Here's to all the tough girls,
Here's to all the sensitive boys.
We belong."

In a more general sense, Cyndi Lauper and True Colors.

"What it feels like for a girl" Madonna. About how boys secretly want to know how it feels for a girl.
"Man, I feel like a woman" Shania Twain. Not about TG per se, but its a good anthem, at least for me. I've danced to this song more times than I care to admit.
"Who we are and who we want to be" Xandria. A good rock n roll song with an identity/masks theme.
"Anybody listening?" Queensryche. About the heartache of being ignored and marginalized and wondering if anyone hears your side of things. Not TG focused, but still relevant. From the album Empire.
Someone already mentioned "Reflection" from Mulan. Christina Aguilera did a longer version.
"I am I" "Damaged" and "Someone Else?" from Queensryche's Promised Land album are evocative of gender dysphoria (at least for me).

As I watched the 121212concert tonight one song stood out for me!

It was Alicia Keys new song "Brand New Me"

Read these lyrics! I know it's a break up song, but it has a whole different meaning for us!!

It's been a while, I'm not who I was before
You look surprised, your words don't burn me anymore
Been meaning to tell you, but I guess it's clear to see
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of me
Can't be bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Careful with your ego, he's the one that we should blame
Had to grab my heart back
God know something had to change
I thought that you'd be happy
I found the one thing I need, why you mad
It's just the brand new kind of me

It took a long long time to get here
It took a brave, brave girl to try
It took one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don't be surprised, don't be surprised

If I talk a little louder
If I speak up when you're wrong
If I walk a little taller
I've been on to you too long
If you noticed that I'm different
Don't take it personally
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of me
And it ain't bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Oh, it took a long long road to get here
It took a brave brave girl to try
I've taken one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don't be surprised, oh see you look surprised

Hey, if you were a friend, you want to get know me again
If you were worth a while
You'd be happy to see me smile
I'm not expecting sorry
I'm too busy finding myself
I got this
I found me, I found me, yeah
I don't need your opinion
I'm not waiting for your ok
I'll never be perfect, but at least now i'm brave
Now, my heart is open
And I can finally breathe
Don't be mad, it's just the brand new kind of free
That ain't bad, I found a brand new kind of me
Don't be mad, it's a brand new time for me,

And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura
I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her
One day, I'd find an honest man to make my husband
We would have two children, build our home on the Gulf of Mexico
Our family would spend hot summer days at the beach together
The sun would kiss our skin as we played in the sand and water
And we would know we loved each other without having to say it

At night, we would sleep with the windows of our house left open
Letting the cool ocean air soothe the sunburned shoulders of our children

There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve
There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve
There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve
There is an ocean in my soul where the waters do not curve!
From the Ocean by Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! (former Tom Gabel) my personal Trans hero.

Carlita brought up Bowie's Lady Stardust - thought I'd mention Rebel Rebel:

"You've got your mother in a whirl
She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl
Hey babe, your hair's alright
Hey babe, lets go out tonight
You like me, and I like it all
We like dancing and we look divine
You love bands when they're playing hard
You want more and you want it fast
They put you down, they say Im wrong
You tacky thing, you put them on

Rebel rebel, youve torn your dress
Rebel rebel, your face is a mess
Rebel rebel, how could they know?
Hot tramp, I love you so!"

And Good Times Roll, by The Cars, has a coupla lines that the imagination can stretch...

My trans theme songs tend to be by Circa Survive. I recommend The Difference Between Medicine and Poison is in the Dose. It really helped me when I was still struggling to come to terms with accepting myself and dealing with others who I loved but who didn't accept me. ("Well, don't call me by my full name, and oh, this is temporary. It feels much better to know that you won't feel a thing. well, don't talk about it; Write it down but don't ask for help. I can't be honest with even myself. Did you ever wish you were somebody else?")

I also recommend All of Your Friends Are Gone by them. It talks about not liking what you see in the mirror, hiding your secret, and people disappearing who were once important to you. ("It climbs in slowly behind. If you trust your neighbors, they'd never suspect what you're like. Welcome them into your life. No one has to know. Playback, delete, and rewind. It's getting closer than you thought it'd get. Just get inside. It's moving faster than you'd ever planned. You'll be relieved when you open up. You let yourself seem vulnerable. And the morning sun will make our bodies comfortable. In taking off your clothes, everything hidden is suddenly exposed..." There's also the line that says, "You'll keep it on the inside, 'cause that's the safest place, 'cause that's the safest place to hide." And since I'm ftm, the line "We are the loneliest of men," really hits home. I've never heard that these songs were about being trans, but they definitely helped me transition and still help me be strong in the face of adversity. I highly recommend this band in general.

A close friend suggested my theme being 'Ruby Tuesday'...

However I'm surprised that nobody has come up with a song by The Who titled 'I'm A Boy' which is very clearly about crossdressing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgOyqdN2SaE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgOyqdN2SaE)

Lyrics

I'm A Boy
(Pete Townshend)

One girl was called Jean Marie
Another little girl was called Felicity
Another little girl was Sally Joy
The other was me, and I'm a boy

My name is Bill and I'm a headcase
They practice making up on my face
Yeah, I feel lucky if I get trousers to wear
Spend ages taking hairpins from my hair

Chorus 1
I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But my ma won't admit it
I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But if I say I am I get it

Put your frock on Jean Marie
Plait your hair Felicity
Paint your nails, little Sally Joy
Put this wig on, little boy

Chorus 1

I wanna play cricket on the green
Ride my bike across the stream
Cut myself and see my blood
I wanna come home all covered in mud

Chorus 2
I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But my ma won't admit it
I'm a boy, I'm a boy, I'm a boy
I'm a boy, I'm a boy, I'm a boy, I'm a boy
I'm a boy, I'm a boy, I'm__ a__ boy__

Antony and the Johnsons have song after song that deal with the theme of being transgender. Here is one that I've always loved - "You Are My Sister":

Pay attention to lyrics :) It may not have been meant as TG-related, but it relates to TG very much :)

Don't be afraid to be weak
Don't be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be the return to yourself
The return to innocence.

If you want, then start to laugh
If you must, then start to cry
Be yourself don't hide
Just believe in destiny.

Don't care what people say
Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to innocence.

You make me dissapointed if you don't listen to this song!

I find this song that you can relate to TG VERY strong! The entire lyrics fits you so strong if you are transgender!

Millencolin - Battery Check Millencolin - Battery Check (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Bugy4s04LA#)

Walking around the streets of Linné
Reloading batteries in my own way
Nobody around here would know who I am
That's o.k.
I really wanna do something new
Just anything different to get into
It's all up to me to give it a try
That it's all up to me is making me terrified
It looks like I'll be waiting for moments
That will never arrive

When will I live my life for me?
When will I do what I want to?
When will I let myself be free
And take care of things that I value?
So when will I live my life just for me?
Just for me?

Hitting P.B. drivin E20 north
Future olans being made
Going back and forth
Remain passive
I do got dreams on my mind
And I really should be taking a chance
Risk my safety just for once advance
The one who is trying
Is the one who succeeds
I should be following
My heart and my needs
But I know it's a problem for me
To translate words into deeds

When will I live my life for me?
When will I do what I want to?
When will I let myself be free
And take care of things that I value?
So when will I live my life just for me?

Please say you feel the same way
Just say you know exactly how I feel
So say you feel the same way
And I will do it for real

When will I live my life for me?
When will I do what I want to?
When will I let myself be free
And take care of things that I value?
It's true. I need to forgive myself and see
It's not too late for something new
So when will I life my life just for me?
Yeah when will I life my life just for me?
Yeah maybe I'll life my life just for me?

Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like A Lady) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf0oXY4nDxE#)

Chorus:
That, that dude looks like a lady
That, that dude looks like a lady
That, that dude looks like a lady
That, that dude looks like a lady

Cruise into a bar on the shore
Her picture graced the grime on the door
She's a long lost love at first bite
Baby maybe you're wrong but you know it's all right
That's right

That, that
That, that

Backstage we're havin' the time
of our lives until somebody say
Forgive me if I seem out of line
Then she whipped out her gun and tried to blow me away!

Chorus

Never judge a book by it's cover
or who you gonna love by your lover
Sayin' love put me wise to her love in disguise
She had the body of a Venus, Lord imagine my surprise.

Chorus

So baby let me follow you down (let me take a peek dear)
Baby let me follow you down (do me, do me, do me all night)
Baby let me follow you down (turn the other cheek dear)
Baby let me follow you down (do me, do me, do me, do me)

Oo, what a funky lady
Oo, she like it, like it, like it, like that.
Oo he was a lady!
Yow, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Chorus
Chorus

Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady
Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady
Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady
Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady

=^..^=

Girlfriend's Girlfriends

Cutiest girl behind my door
Everybody's hiding but she wont's more
Now beauty broke down her chains somehow
Who's gonna live in my body now

A growing pain within my heart divine
Will I ever re-draft the line
Switching on the light
I will not be assigned
Girlfriend's girlfriends always will be fine

Dash thru the door, wide open warm
Now she's escaped, will not conform
And every second has become so miss-define
Girlfriend's girlfriends always will be mine

What can I do
What can I say
Paint your face, time to play
Forget about the second day
We could be friends
With a kiss in flow
Paint your face, time to go
Its time to let your true self show

Cutiest girl ask for more
Unfortunately someone's creeping on my floor
An empty glass, a candle flame, a knock on the door
Who's gonna fight for me anymore

Opened my heart, That will not subside
Transcend to the light
I will not be confined
Girlfriend's girlfriends always will be fine

Crash thru the gate, a coming storm
Now she's enrapture, The brightest form
And every sense has heightened, so purrfect fine
Girlfriend's girlfriends always will be mine

What can I do
What can I say

Paint your face, time to play
Forget about the second day
We could be friends
With a kiss in flow
Paint your face, time to go
It's time to let your true self  show

What can I do
What can I say
Paint your face, time to go
It's time to let your true self show

It's time to let your true self show

Another song could be by The Beatles 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKHA2AGbXtI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKHA2AGbXtI)

It was actually written about homosexuality, which in the UK in the 1960's was still illegal and a criminal offence but it could easily be taken to embrace trans issues as well.

LYRICS
Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feeling two foot small
Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

How can I even try
I can never win
Hearing them seeing them
In the state I'm in
How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

I'd like to hear more songs with transgender themes, or that even just mention it in passing.

It's not easy finding any songs related to this theme, at least from the classic song catalogs.

Help me find some, please.

I know some of these have already been mentioned, but I just had to post them here!

I Fell In Love With a Dead Boy, by Antony and the Johnsons-it's somewhat vague, but I always interpreted it as the thoughts of a woman who has fallen in love with a man who is becoming a woman.  It's a heartbreaking piece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H03VpvUtm6k

Picture of A Man by Our Lady J-Great description of what being a trans* woman feels like in a male dominated world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVy5vA0g1Yk

Prince Johnny by St. Vincent-She said herself it was written about a self destructive friend, and going by the lyrics alone I'm almost certain that he was trans...it's a beautiful song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ4mIVOrBMo

And I know this isn't a trans song per se, but the video is fantastic.  Also, for some reason people thought that Annie Lennox was a "male transvestite"; that always makes me laugh, but I can sort of see it.  When I saw this though, I knew I wanted to BE Annie Lennox-she transcends gender so effortlessly, it's inspiring.

I actually started a Spotify playlist for songs that have meaning to me in transition.  A lot of the songs on there came from this thread, but the first three I put on.
Shinedown- Second Chance
Idina Menziel, Kristen Chenowith, Wicked-Defying Gravity
Idina Menziel, Frozen- Let It Go

These three songs pretty much tell me it's time to be myself, that I can't stop hiding who I am anymore.

Has anyone said Mansun - Being A Girl yet?

http://youtu.be/g-19nT3ULc4

I used to wright the words of this song all over my notebooks when I was a teenager. It was the first time I had ever heard a song that I could directly relate too. It's also quite punchy which, in a way, kinda go's with the whole frustrated, bitter, angry and cheated feelings one gets with  when going threw puberty in the wrong gender.

I have to agree. Actually it's contradictive as traswomen aren't dudes!, we're women. I really don't see where this song fits into the community at all unless it's held as a 'tongue in cheek' type of thing, and even then many might find it insulting. Just my $.02.

This is the perfect trans theme song. (Since it's written by a transchick...even though it was written before she came out.) When you read the lyrics, it's even more appropriate. Although it's a bit twisted in a way. But it IS Grindcore, after all.

I'm probably one of the very few to think of Weird Al's "Truck Drivin' Song" I remember years ago when I bought this album, and listening to it in the car when this song came on my dad said something like "you can think of these people as either a guy who is very creepy or a girl with a very low voice." Not sure if that's an insult or what, but here's the song:

Then I guess it's a good thing weird al released a new album, and due to not being able to get to best buy to get it, buying it on amazon, which sent me an email recommending other things as this album being one of them, as me being a python fan, as me looking it up on youtube, to hear it, and know of this topic to post it onto this topic, for you to see it, for you to be happy!

Seriously? Nobody had mentioned "Sweet Transvestite" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

I think I saw that movie 50 times before I even turned 18.  Maybe I was trying to tell myself something?

I Fell In Love With a Dead Boy, by Antony and the Johnsons-it's somewhat vague, but I always interpreted it as the thoughts of a woman who has fallen in love with a man who is becoming a woman.  It's a heartbreaking piece.

Perhaps not a very famous one, but Josephine by Terrorvision, a fairly minor English band from the 90s, comes to mind. I always thought it was super-catchy growing up without really understanding or thinking about the lyrics. I listened to it again for the first time in ages recently only to realise that... um... it's about a guy meeting someone he used to know under the name of Joe, finding that she is now Josephine, a trans woman, and falling for her. :D

I had a friend called Joe,
When friends were hard to find.
He had a restless soul,
And something on his mind.

One day I went away,
And then returned to the scene,
Not to find restless Joe, no,
But to find Josephine.

I asked her what her name was
She said Joe had left the city
I asked her what her name was
She said... They call me Josephine.
Josephine. Josephine.

It took a while to click,
But then I got the gist.
The girl by my side (by my side),
Was the guy I've missed (was the guy I've missed).

I took her for a beer,
To talk about old times,
Just to find the beer, dear,
Was now a sweet white wine.

I asked her what her name was
She said Joe had left the city
I asked her what her name was
She said they call me Josephine.
Josephine. Josephine. Josephine.

So we talked all night,
And I just can't pretend,
Although I lost old Joe, yo,
I got a new girlfriend (I got a new girlfriend).

I asked her what her name was
She said Joe had left the city
I asked her what her name was
She said they call me Josephine.

Also, while it's hard to argue that it's not more about defying gender expectations and being yourself than it is actively identifying as the opposite gender given the subject matter of the story, I always thought Reflection from Disney's Mulan was kind of an unofficial trans anthem in its lyrics.

Look at me.
I will never pass for a perfect bride,
or a perfect daughter.
Can it be I'm not meant to play this part?

Now I see
that if I were truly to be myself.
I would break my family's heart.

Who is that girl I see staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don't know?
Somehow I cannot hide who I am though I've tried.
When will my reflection show who I am inside?

Thanks for this song 'reflection'.  I now know there is at least one song that works, reading most of these are just depressing for me.  I was around when these original songs like Lola came out (really, no pun intended here  :) ) and while yeah I have to say it is good that it brings the transgender issue to light, there is a side to it that I do not like.  When these mainstream songs 'automatatically' makes that link in hetrosexual minds that transgender is synonymous with gay (mtf only means sexually desiring men), it underlines with an ink that is almost impossible to erase.  Not to say that any one shade of our community is less important than any other (the poll here proves that) its just that most of the public will never know because they do not see these threads just hear the songs.  Dani

It's only one line in the song "got your mother in a whirl, she's not sure if you are a boy or a girl", but with David Bowie singing it, there can be all sorts of implications. I also can relate to the rebel image, so the song has personal significance. I am sort of this girl at 60.

I am honestly shocked that this wasn't mentioned, but my all time favorite has to be Boy George's She Was Never He

Tasha was a stunning vision, painted eyes with such precision
Longer legs than any girl I know
Swishing down the old kent road, with her hips on overload
Making sure the lonliness don't show

She was never he for as long as I remember
She was never of her gender categorically
She was never he though the boys at school were cruel
You would have to be a fool not to see

That she was never...

Jodie she was quelle surprise, to fool the boys was such a breeze
But deep inside her heart the terror flowed
What if he should realise, break her heart or black her eyes
These things are so important for a girl to know

She was never he for as long as I remember
She was never of her gender categorically
She was never he though though this world could be so cruel
You would have to be a fool not to see

And the government says you no longer exist
It's a kick in the eye, it's the final twist
Of the surgeons knife
Welcome to my glamorous life

Oh the big dark man
Will he turn a blind eye
Love me for who I am
Turn me out and make me cry

She was never he for as long as I remember
She was never of her gender categorically
She was never he though this world could be so cruel
You would have to be a fool not to see

She was never he for as long as I remember
She was never of her gender categorically
She was never he though this world could be so cruel
You would have to be a fool not to see
That she was never...

When you dream you only dream your Annabel.
All the secrets there inside you Annabel.

Down beneath an emerald sky sing Annabel.
Nothing that they did will stop you Annabel.

Land of the lines, tangled there in porcelain.
Under the stars you'll begin.

When you dream you only dream your Annabel.
Sleep reminds you takes you there, oh Annabel.

Gentle whisper, endless winters, Annabel.
Why've they could have let you be both Annabel.

Land of the lines, of the years below still lies.
You are the truth they denied.
Run like the sea, tangled there in porcelain.
Under the stars you begin.

Oh oh oh oh

Once in a while I act like a child
To feel like a kid again
It gets like a prison
In the body I'm living in

Because everyone's watching
Quick to start talking
I'm losing my innocence
Wish I were a little girl
Without the weight of the world
It would be nice to start over again
Before we were men

I'd give, I'd bend
Let's play pretend

----
I interpret this as a transwoman who wished she could start life over, at least pretend "she's" still innocent/female/before the reality took away his innocence. Playing pretend is her only option for her sanity *this would have even more meaning if the video was set in like the 1890s-1910s, with a more "old-sound" to it like a Victorian-Edwardian man who pretends in his room with a beautiful dress and a wig, but she would give everything she has "I'd give, I'd bend" to be who she truly is.... Before we were men, meant that she knows other transwomen who wish they could transition. And then she would go off to war/work or something playing some masculine role.

I doubt the original singer thought of the song in that light.

This one got me through a rough patch or two, even though I'm not so much an enby..

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nzUgn7TIdz4

Eliot Sumner is out as non-binary/genderless. They present very androgynously. Contemplate the issues with being, presenting, and transitioning nonbinary and listen to the lyrics.

(Verse 1)
Find me a definition
I'm confident what I'm not
I have foreign specifications
I have foreign specifications
I want a classification
Provide me with a tag
If that's the key to survival here
Does it help you understand
(Chorus)
I'm not sure about the species
I'm not sure about the gender
I'm not sure about the breed
I'm not sure about the species
(Verse 2)
Come inside the exhibition
Come and see what it's all about
We have foreign modifications
We have foreign modifications
They're not sure if this is legal
They're not sure if this was right
They're not sure about the species
They're not sure about the species
(Chorus)
Before I fall to pieces
Tell me what's your species
(x4)
(Verse 3)
Find me a definition
Or render me unknown
I have modern specifications
I have modern specifications
They're not sure about the species
They're not sure about the gender
They're not sure about the breed
They're not sure about the species

SPANISH MOSS by AGAINST ME!
(Laura Jane Grace wrote this before coming out. The video for the song shows a cemetery with trees covered in Spanish moss).

You just need to find some place to get away.
You can forget your name.
And there's no need to apologize.

It could be a good life.
It could be such a very good life.
We could find a place for just me and you.
Need some place to stay safe, need some place to stay safe and warm.
Why don't we deserve the same?

You just need to find some place to get away.
You can forget your name.
And there's no need to apologize.

Look into the Spanish moss.
Let your mind conjure up old ghosts.
Ride your bike through lost Florida streets.
Everything we've said and done can be so easily forgotten.
You can always change who you are.

You just need to find some place to get away.
You can forget your name.
And there's no need to apologize.
I caught a glimpse of this life, it could be such a very good life.
We could find a place for just me and you.
But it's not yours to keep.
Yeah, the truth will tear your heart out.
In a world run by gangsters, you're stuck standing in a bread line.

You just need to find some place to get away.
You can forget your name.
And there's no need to apologize.
