I'm starting to find the "gotchas" in this process.  To change my Social Security card, I need to send in my old driver's license.  So I can't do that until I get my new one.  I need my driver's license number to change my voter registration, but I won't know if that will change until I get the new one. 

Wonder how much more complicated this will get.

Now from what I read above, I'm not sure how the process would work here in CA. The dmv told me I'd have to change it with SSA first, to get a change at the dmv, because they use SSA info to confirm your identity for the dmv change. Seems like a catch-22 situation to me. ???

No, it's not a catch-22.  You take your old DL (with your old name on it) and your name-change court order to SSA.  That way they know that you are the person who had the old name.  Then you can go get your new DL.

If you don't have an SSA office nearby they do say, "Send it in."  Which I think is totally stupid.

Here's the summary of my first week:

I have done my DL, SSN, voter registration, work and insurance, clinic, pharmacy, and school.

HR, the Dept of Public Safety, the SSA, and the school looked at the court order and gave it back to me.  The pharmacy, the clinic, and the voter registration office didn't care about documentation.

This still leaves to do my passport, bank account, car and house title, mortgage company, AAA, and the zoo membership.

And then there's my birth certificate:

This language recognizes that not all transgender people will complete their transition by having surgery, but that they can still be recognized as the new sex if they have completed whatever treatment is necessary as determined by their doctors.
