Title: Odd question
Post by: Rena-san on December 22, 2012, 09:24:35 AM
This is the first time something like this happened. But this morning after I took my pills-spironolactone and estradiol-about a half hour later I had, um bad diarreha. I'm just worried that this like makes void the pills I took today. Any ideas? I know this is wierd.

Well, I'm not sure how this would make void today's medication. The pills get absorbed into the bloodstream before making it to the large intestine, so they shouldn't be leaving your body unless you're vomiting.

My guess is that the diarrhea is unrelated. You should investigate it, because it might be a symptom for something, but it is likely to be as simple as a result of poor eating.

In any case, it's always safer to keep your medicine intake regular. It is advised for a person who is unsure about whether they've missed a day to just wait until the next day to take it again - I would apply that guideline here as well. If you can't know for sure about whether that dose made it into your blood, it's better to assume that it did because potentially double-dosing is a risk.

It takes an average of 24 hours for something you've eaten to pass through the entire digestive system. What that means is that vomiting within an hour or two of taking pills can (not guaranteed, but can) mean you lose them. But there's no easy way for pills to pass undigested out the other end, barring serious illness/complications. Kelly is right that pills should be absorbed long before they reach the large intestine, too.
