Life is a rollercoaster. You get on for tons of ups and downs, only to get off with your hair a mess, feeling dizzy, and ready to puke, but I pity the sucker who doesn't want to go for another round. :P

Haha, this is a good one. :D
This is so much easier to say in Finnish but I'll do my best in translating it...
"There are only two things in life you must do; take a dump and die, and the latter one only once."
Finnish proverbs ftw. ;D
Oh yeah, another one which is more related to my age difference with my friends (most of them are three years younger than me so they always say I'm an old fart:
"I don't get older. I level up."/"I'm not old, I'm a classic!" :D

I would quote a monolog I improvised once; "Livet är ett helvete" - "Life is a hell"
Now it is not to be taken negatively, because the actual message of the monolog was one of hope, that even though life is a hell, it's worth living because live is still the most wonderful thing you'll ever experience.
I don't remember much about it because it was some time ago and I was really drunk, so drunk that when I woke up the next morning I was still drunk. I just remember that it was amazing and I got several of the girls in the room to cry. And it sums up my view on life. A hopefully outlook coated in (fake) darkness.
:)

I think... the point of life for me is work on being more a gardener than a landscaper. To grow rather than trim. To cultivate rather than regulate. To produce nourishment rather that cut and mold everything to conform to a vision of how things should be. I just feel there is more grace in adding to the world than taking away, in letting things grow rather than boxing them in.

The Conqueror Worm (http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/178359) by Edgar Allan Poe pretty much sums up my view of life:
"That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
And its hero, the Conqueror Worm."
A Dream Within A Dream (http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-dream-within-a-dream/) by Edgar Allan Poe also works just fine:
"Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?"
"That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
And its hero, the Conqueror Worm."

Life is a continuous succession of opportunities.
It's up to us to notice them and make the best of it :)
Of course, sadly, most will be always missing them, and have no clue about how to notice them...
Indeed, my primary goal in life is to help others to find those opportunities, but first, I have to be *very good* at spotting them too!

I view it as suffering. For me, it's a long dark tunnel and I can't seem to find the light at the end of it. If I had the option of not being born, then I would have chosen that. I'm still living though despite the sadness I feel everyday so there must be something my subconcious is clinging on to-probably the idea that life will get better. I can't see it yet, but we will see.

I've closed myself down so hard that I don't know I can answer honestly. As a child and adolescent I was awkward and shy, hated my inability to be one of the popular crowd. As an adult I'm successful and well regarded in a work environment, but have no real social life. I don't try to have one. I was married for 20+ years before my wife passed, and have a daughter who is now a young adult, although still at home. I have enough intellectual pursuits to occupy me, although lately those have been languishing as I'm spending too much time here considering the issues at hand, and in time wasting unproductive activities. Sounds like depression, no? But it's well suppressed and I'm generally upbeat and have always been an optimist although with an often sarcastic, dark edge. I find joy and happiness in different interests and distractions.
So, how do I see life: for years my philosophy boiled down to just this: Stuff Happens. There's no rhyme, no reason, no great purpose, no grand plan, and there's no point in looking for one - it's not there. This doesn't equate to unhappiness, I think you can believe all that and still be a happy person. Why are we here? To enjoy life while we can, to help others in our circle, to leave the world a better place for those that come after, and to marvel in all the wonders that surround us that we have no hope of ever understanding.

Afternote: Peter Gabriel's, Don't Give Up just popped up in the random shuffle:
Kate Bush has an amazing voice.

Kia Ora,
" Life is like a flower and towards the sun it grows-
its scent may seem unpleasant or pleasing to the nose.
However, this reality is an illusion-for a smell is 'just' a smell-
the attachment one gives to it can make life heaven or an hell!
Quote: The American Physiological Society
"We examined whether presenting an odour with a positive, neutral, or negative name would influence how people perceive it. In experiment 1, 40 participants rated 15 odours for their pleasantness, intensity, and arousal. In experiment 2, 30 participants passively smelled 10 odours while their skin conductance (SC), heart rate (HR), and sniffing were recorded. We found significant overall effects of odour names on perceived pleasantness, intensity, and arousal. Pleasantness showed the most robust effect of odour names: the same odours were perceived as more pleasant when presented with positive than with neutral and negative names and when presented with neutral than with negative names. In addition, odorants were rated as more intense when presented with negative than with neutral and positive names and as more arousing when presented with positive than with neutral names. Furthermore, SC and sniff volumes, but not HR, were modified by odour names, and the SC changes could not be accounted for by sniffing changes. Importantly, odour names presented with odourless water did not produce any effect on skin conductance and sniff volumes, ruling out the possibility that the naming-related findings were triggered by an emotional reaction to odour names. Taken together, these experiments show that there is a lot to a name, at least when it comes to olfactory perception!"
"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet !"

So, yeah, it is a well established fact that the brain creates an internal reality base on sensory input plus internal projections..The created reality may not be 100% that of the outside and biased by internal experience or expectation..
So what..it has successfully allows to conquer and dominate our planet and the year to come it will allows to conquer other planets...
The next few decades will see the introduction of brain-computer interfaces that would allows us to enhance and augment our internal representation of the outside universe....Got to love technology and sciences
Just like in The Matrix! What if we're already in a computer simulation of the world and gender dysphoria is just a bug that happens when your simulated body doesn't line up with your real body?

So, yeah, it is a well established fact that the brain creates an internal reality base on sensory input plus internal projections..The created reality may not be 100% that of the outside and biased by internal experience or expectation..
So what..

In one way or other, we have been conditioned from conception through pregnancy-birth, and as we grow we are continually conditioned, whether it be by religion, spirituality, political ideologies, 'life' experience [real or imaginary] etc...
We have been conditioned to react in a certain way...
The trick is to de-programme the conditioned 'self' and re-programme/ re-fit it with a more positive outlook, one that's more aligned with what 'is'...

Nah, we see "life" through our own socially/educationally-conditioned perceptions. If that includes a religious view, then we see life from a religious viewpoint. If it includes a nihilistic view, nothing in life makes sense. If we view it through "our own view", than that's just self-conditioning. It's that simple, really.
In a sense, this is what this thread has already demonstrated: we simply cannot agree with a single view, although we can certainly find common points :) This is specially true if we have a similar background.

Aw I love that!
There is something strange about the Christian mystics. They have such wonderful insights about reality — so often bordering on transmitting an experience which goes beyond the boundaries of our usual perceptions, just described using Christian words.
What Teresa of Ávila seems to be experiencing is this idea that there is a way to tap a source of compassion which is beyond description, but to put it into practice for the well-being of everybody, we ought to use our body and our will as the tools to bring that compassion to our fellow beings.
I can most certainly emphasize with that view.
(To Zenda: it's also so interesting how the mystics rarely need to use the word "I". They don't even talk about making big efforts to put things into practice. They just do it, effortlessly. It's fascinating, isn't it?)

Kia Ora Sandra,
"I" know You know all this....
It's important to understand what "I" is, that is the make up of "I" [this psycho-physical phenomena ] and how it comes into play with everyday life...But for the most part we give "I" no 'thought'... Even though we think there is an unchanging abiding "I" [self] whose thinking ...When in fact it's just 'thought' itself that does the 'thinking'...And "I" just go along with the thought for the ride... ;) ;D
But it's best we don't go too deep into this age old quest/search for 'who or what am "I"...Well not for this thread...Maybe you would like to start one up in the philosophy or spiritual section...
::) Thought has just planted another 'thought-seed' for a thought to germinate and grow-think about ;) ;D

Hehe I have no idea — I'm no mystic, so don't know what "the register of mystic writing" actually means. All I can observe is what they write, but I cannot really speculate much about what they felt when they wrote about their experiences.

The register is the tone of writing, the certain stylistic elements that make it clear that you are writing to a friend or an MP for example.
It may be that the use of 'I' is not a standard one in mystic writing, either because influential early practitioners avoided it but more likely because of the setting in which the writing was shared with it's audience. This would then mean that certain mannerisms become part of mystic writing.
The point being that it is probably more a matter of style then how they felt or anything like that.

Now that's a very interesting point, Pica Pica! Do you think that the style is common across cultures? It's just because it seems to be independent of the epoch and the region where it was written; all write in the same way.
Of course, I'm aware that cultures were actually much more in touch with each other than we usually like to think, but, still, it's a bit strange.
It would be like finding a lot of different cultures around the globe spontaneously writing in English in the 12th century.
I'm not saying that you're not right; I'm just saying it's a very interesting point you make!

I look at the universe and how incredibly vast it is and how insignificantly small we are and it makes me wonder how completely irrelevant life is. If humanity were to die out tomorrow, the universe would not care. The world would not care. Everything would go on as though we never even existed. It seems to me that everything we deem important is only so because we need it to be, not because it actually is.

I see life as a chance to get off this rock and move to Alpha centauri and start up a planetary hunger games, sacrificing thousands of lives from each of the colonies in a controlled tribal warfare system to divvy up fissile resources for the sake of clean energy(and thus prosperity) for the colony that wins.
Oh, and pizza. Pizza is important to my worldview as well.

The true meaning of Life from our plastic pal who's fun to be with, Marvin.
Life? Don't talk to me about life!
Life. Loathe it or ignore it. You can't like it.
My capacity for happiness, you could fit into a matchbox without taking out the matches first
The first ten million years were the worst. And the second ten million: they were the worst, too. The third ten million I didn't enjoy at all. After that, I went into a bit of a decline.
