Title: Say hello to the Parktown Prawn!!!
Post by: LilDevilOfPrada on January 10, 2013, 05:07:35 PM
Parktown Prawn is its common causal OMG its a.... name, Its actually called the King Cricket.

I just thought I would enlighten the world to a insect(same family as locusts) that only exists in my city. Literally only in my city.

These evil creature activity jump at you and follow you!! They also spray a horible black smelly ink at you!!! Not just that they are like the new york rats in numbers in some parts!!

Its also important to note they have high resistant to bug posions and literally can be squished flat and still live to talk about it.

You can all keep your nasty little bugs and snakes. One of the nice things about living in the north don't have any near as many of the nasty little varmints.

Isn't that Mad, Mad World?  No idea about the character.

On topic - looks like a potato bug:

Cool - two opposable thumbs per 'hand'!

Looked it up on wikipedia - they are related:

"Anostostomatidae is a family in the order Orthoptera. It is sometimes referred to as Mimnermidae or Henicidae in some taxonomies, and common names include King crickets in South Africa, and weta in New Zealand. They are believed to be most closely related to the Jerusalem crickets of North America. Prominent members includes the Parktown prawn of South Africa, and the giant weta of New Zealand."

Those look so cool o.o I live in the northeast part of the US, but I also live out in a region that is mostly wooded. Going out back at my parent's house, my spouse and I found this on the underside of a leaf:

We also have these ginormous spiders that we have to watch out for (about as big as a hand, sometimes larger, they are known to eat birds and are yellow and black). They make big webs and my spouse freaked out after almost walking into one XD I had seen them before where I used to live and there was an an outbreak for one year. At one point we had three of them on the fences in the front yard o_O
