This week, menswear designers took a giant step for all mankind. Now they might want to take a few baby steps back. The London Men's Collection, a week-long preview of cutting edge collections for the Fall/Winter 2013-2014 season, is supposed to offer a glimpse into the future of menswear. Instead it was a harbinger of a fashion apocalypse. Wooden face barricades, toxic waste jumpsuits, and strapless dresses worn by dour male pixies. Ladies, meet your new stylish man. He's your worst nightmare and he knows it.

The worst?? Easy - #3

Apparently, there is a drug abuse problem within the fashion design industry.

# 12 is not far behind.

The "somebody kill me" design is probably more the thinking of the model then the "designer" of these garbage (unless you count the rubbish bag design).

No problems. I just think industrial workers will need some fluoro in the design.

I think the strapless number #1 should be compulsory for most evangelists.

Well, I liked the les miz barricade mask.  It had an 18th century vibe to it along with a throwback to the pyramid head monster from Silent Hill.

#6 did look like a mutant spawn of Jack Sparrow after chemo, and the cartoon dog, Tintin. But compare this to about half the high fashion runway shows with women (and transfemme) models, and I'd say its about time the boys got to have some of this sort of fun. And when you think about it, femme modeling conventions also have tended to encourage that "I'm not really here" stare for decades, at least going back to the 70s or 80s.

It does sometimes seem like fashion designers are in a contest to see who can come up with the least wearable garments possible. In reality, this all theater, though. Every season designers come up with a set of outlandish designs to draw attention to themselves and, thus, perhaps, to their actual sold lines. It's like YouTube and web memes-- nobody pays much attention to you if you don't do something outlandish.

I think this is more the art side of fashion, where it's more about making something visually interesting than something anybody would ever wear.

That said...

And for this, designers get PAID?

Hell, I thought I had no talent for clothing design...when all id have to do is visit the local hardware and craft stores, nail some boards together, knit like a mad woman (emphasis on "mad"), and toss a garbage bag on some of the worst efforts...

And I'd be a bazillionaire...

I'm amused that #13 says "Please kill me".  I'd probably think that too if I had to wear any of these (especially that face-fence in #3)
