Maryland lawmakers on Tuesday introduced a bill that would ban anti-transgender discrimination in the workplace, housing and public accommodations.

The Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2013 that gay state Sen. Rich Madaleno (D-Montgomery County) and state Sen. Jamie Raskin (D-Montgomery County) introduced has more than 20 co-sponsors. These include state Sen. Allan Kittleman (R-Howard County.)

The proposal died in committee last April because Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller (D-Prince George's and Calvert Counties) reportedly blocked a vote on it. Miller has since backed the proposal.

Well, when I saw this, I thought to myself, I'll write to my senator to support it even though he usually votes the opposite of the way I want him to.

Then I saw Sen. Kittleman is one of the sponsors.

Every once in a while your elected officials do what you want them to.

Well this is cool. I used to live in MD, and I have to say, I like what's going on over there these days. I hope it passes.

It's been a while since I have been here, but, I saw this elsewhere and then my heart almost stopped when I saw that "she who shall never be named" has mounted the usual attack on the bill with her usual trans hate. I can only wonder how much influence she and her ilk will have on the bill. I mean, she already sent a letter to the U.N. bashing trans women and did it under the gun so that the trans advocates had zero time to respond.

Why she has not been disbarred yet is beyond me!

Unfortunately this attempt failed to get through with the outcome being 5 votes for and 6 votes against the bill. Senator Jim Brochin's vote was the nail in the coffin (6 th vote) for this years attempt to push the bill to the next phase where a commitment from Governor Martin O'Malley had been made to sign the bill into law, without a favorable vote from committee. It was a big slap in the face (for me personally) to learn that Senator Jim Brochin's own district has trans discrimination protections in place, yet he was not supportive of the 20 remaining counties being afforded these same protections.

Voting in favor of the bill were, Senators Raskin, Forehand, Frosh, Gladden and Zirkin. Voting against the bill were Senators Stone, Muse, Jacobs, Brochin, Shank and Getty. Time to let these guys know what we think about their lack of responsibility when it comes to adding protections for one of the most vulnerable groups of people in the US.

Unlike my home state of Texas I am certain Maryland WILL get there sooner than later. Here's hoping 2013 is the year for many favorable changes that will allow the world to be a little more bearable for those of us who still struggle severely.
