I know that this is an sexual orientation story, but I thought I would pas it along.

George Takei came out as being gay, and having a partner for the past 18 years.

For those who are wondering what I am talking about, George Takei is probably best known for his role as Lieutenant Sulu on the original Star Trek series.  For its time, Star Trek was the most forward-thinking television show on national TV.  It had a multinational / multi-racial crew.  The first interracial kiss on TV was on Star Trek.  Little did we know that it was more inclusive than what we knew about!

Everyone has different opinions, to me Star wars > Star Trek

Boldly going where no man no one has gone before!

For a while on Star Trek the next generation, you could see both men and women wearing uniform dresses.

I just had this star wars vs star trek discussion with my daughter's boyfriend!  I'll take the Enterprise and the Defiant over the Death Star and a flight of X-Wing fighters anytime!

If you want a fairly heavy read, take a look at Rare Earth.  By the time I was finished with it, I felt very lonely in this galaxy!

Looks to me like we have a star wars over which is greater. There can be no denial that Star Trek is not only better there wouldn't be a Star Wars without it's influence. And it only takes two years to come out with another Star Trek Movie. Speilburg has to think about it for twenty years. Also any starfleet vessel including a shuttle could have just beamed a bomb into the Death Stars weak spot

It is great that George Takei has made a public statement. It does help all of us that such a public figure is unafraid to make an official statement to the press. It means a lot. We should all send George a letter of support and a hearty thank you for what he has done to push forward the GBLT fight for recognition of our god given rights.

With due respect to George Takei, think about it?

Where is his career presently?  How is this knowlege going to affect him in employment.  Plain and simple its not.  He is assured of a future living by royalites from syndicated shows.

My admiration goes out to those who stand to lose everything by admission.  Not the Ellen Degeneris's,  the Martinas, the Cheryl Swopes.

A lesbian who puts up her wedding pic in her cubicle at work, the gay man who puts his partner on his companies domestic partner benefit form.  The woman or man who transitions at work without benefit of gender discrimination laws.  These are the peeps to admire, the ones you almost never hear off unless its bad news.

Its easy to come out when you already have your future secure, when you are ready to retire or already have.

Yes Leigh all of that you say is true. Their futures are pretty secure and even Swoops admitted that as a woman her being lesbian does not have as great an effect on her career as it might for someone in the MBA. However the person in there cubicle isn't going to get the press coverage that someone in the spotlight does. The individual may be the one in the trench who catches all the shratnel but unfortuantely unless they are able to make a federal case of it won't be able to draw much attention to our plight. Takei did not have to come out. There was nothing in it for him. Although he had nothing to loose he had nothing to gain either. Ergo I don't think his contribution should be diminished by the fact that he had nothing to loose.

I agree with what Leigh said earlier, that Takei's coming out isn't at an enormous personal risk to himself or his career. BUT...I think it's good that the world sees more of the homosexual & transgender communities, so when famous people come out it provides exposure which I think helps those who have to deal with every day society.

To me it is not big deal that he came out.  He is just another person in society.  I hate the hero worship that actors and actresses get.  It is not different when they take political stands, some people get all invovled because they are famous and rich.  Their personal opinions are no more important than any of ours.

I agree with Sarah that stars are over-rated---who says their jobs are more important than those of, say, teachers, nurses, trash collectors?

Still, though, I think any positive attention the gay community gets is good, no matter where it's drawn from....
