Title: Greetings from the Pacific Northwest
Post by: GreenThumb on February 05, 2013, 10:14:55 PM
Hi, just wanted to introduce myself as a new member to the site. I am MtF and  had my first therapist visit January 31st, and realized I have no real support system. I'm very introverted, so this forum is truly a blessing I would eventually like to find and meet with a group locally, but I'll have to work up some more courage before I try that. I'm more than a little nervous about the whole journey. I'm sure I'll have tons of questions and I'm sure most, if not all of them are already answered somewhere on this site. I'm looking forward to making some new friends and getting to know you. I'm not even sure how to sign this post, I'm having a hard time choosing a name. I like Alyssa, Melissa and a couple of others, for now I'll just be "GreenThumb" Thanks for reading.

Welcome! I'm from the Seattle area. This is a great site. Don't worry about the name, this is a great place to try them on. I hope you find people close to you to get to know. I have met a few of the people from here that live in the PNW, so far they have all been great.

welcome to the forums! I'll be living in eugene in may weee :D I'm planning to utilize MY green thumb on a small farm that practices permaculture techniques. Besides the forums, there's a lot of cool peeps on the chats for remote support. I'm very much like you, mtf who is new and nervous about my future. I had some very bad "not trans enough" and "can't I just be normal" stuff going on over the past month or so. That was lame. Well I begged and prayed for some sort of sign so I could stop my worrying~it came. My best friend basically had this dream and he finally shared it with me and pretty much he knows all about me. Very weird. BUT.... not to try and hijack your welcoming thread I just thought that story might make you feel better. Its like I was soo worried and upset for being different and was afraid of losing my friends etc... but then one of em figured out somehow and is super supportive. I went from agony to having the biggest grin in one night.

I think Alyssa is a beautiful name. Melissa is sweet as well. I haven't picked my name yet as Joe>Jo is easy enough.

I look forward to reading your posts and hearing which name you choose. Have a great day and welcome!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes, I can tell this is a very supportive community. I'm living on the Oregon coast right now, but I'm hoping I'll be in one of the larger metro areas soon. Glad to hear there are so many people from the PNW here, I don't feel as alone.

Permaculture is some exciting stuff. I have a couple of Geoff Lawton movies on my dvd rack. Oregon State University has recently added quite a few permaculture courses to their schedule. I've been thinking about taking some. I think most of them are offered online, but I'm a little wary racking up more student loan debt, when I know I have so many other things to save for. I miss the small food forest I built in my parent's backyard while I was living in southern california. They get to pick fresh fruit all year round. It's nice to meet you and I wish you luck on your adventure farming and in life.

I'm up in these parts too. Good luck and ditto on the sentiment that Susan's is a fine place to try out a name. Congratulations on taking your first steps. And welcome to the site. :)

I hope it's not the southern Oregon coast. My parents live in Coos Bay, and it is not a very trans friendly place. I hate visiting them there.

Good luck on your move.

Hi GT! I live in Ohio now, but I grew up in Washington State (and I'm still a huge Seahawks fan)... If you ever want to talk, drop me a line! :)

Hey Brooke - LOL, I'd say anywhere off the I 5 corridor is not real trans friendly.....  I'm really not a fan of Portland and I don't want to live there (nice place to visit), but I do like it's trans friendly atmosphere

I'd have to agree. I'll be out of this small town, before I start hrt. I'm definitely not in Coos Bay, but I have heard it described as "a hole". I'm not really comfortable being more specific on location than "the Oregon coast".

Oh, no need to get more specific. We don't need any details you don't want to share. I only say I'm in the Seattle area. This is a big area, so I know no one will track me down.  ;D

Yes, Coos Bay is a hole. But, my parent's have a beautiful home right on the bay with a gorgeous view. Pretty much the only reason I visit them is to sit in the hot tub and watch the waves. Normally, I have them come up to visit me.

I have my face all over the stuff I do and I'm okay with that so far. Knowing who I am doesn't matter if my identity isn't worth stealing and I'm not looking for an employer. And I'm not sure I've ever met anybody who could find me online and not handle the implications of what they found. So far.

I'd probably be more careful if I had reason to be. We here don't ever encourage people to share more detail than they're comfortable with, so please don't feel pressured.

For sure, I'm just starting my journey and worried about being outed in the small town where I live or at work. I'm sure I'll get more comfortable here as time passes and after I get out of this town.

I have 7 months left of my new employee probationary period at work. Right now they could let me go if I sneeze to loud or for no cause at all. I'm finally in a decent paying job, that I like, with insurance and I want to keep it.

Thanks for the support and understanding

Hi Greenthumb,

A big Aussie welcome to Susan's family. It's good of you to drop in and say "Hi". Hope you like it here, and you stay for a while.

There is a mountain of information, resources and friendship waiting for you here, you just need to jump in start talking and ask any question you like. You're quite safe here and we are very accepting.

Congratulations on setting up your therapy. Best decision you've made so far. After a few visits you'll soon have a bit more confidence to seek a local support group. From all the 'north westerners you've drawn out of the woodwork, I don't think there'll be a problem fr you finding a group.

Looking forward to hearing more of your story in time to come, but in the meantime, be safe, well and happy.

Lotsa huggs
Catherine
