Title: If you're planning on coming out en masse, here's an idea on how to approach it.
Post by: bullwinklle on February 13, 2013, 04:28:39 PM
Hi! I'm long past coming out and well into transitioning, but I wanted to share with some of you who may be just starting down the path a way to come out.

I had a Facebook page in my former name, and rather than keep it (and a sort of remnant of the past, such as old posts referencing my old name, etc.), I opted to make a new page with my new name. What I did was post a comic on the old page basically explaining what was going on, left it up for about 4-5 months, then deactivated the old page. The idea was that if someone cared enough to look at my page, then they cared enough to know what was going on in my life, so they could know about my transition. Everyone else....well, sorry.

As a fan of ->-bleeped-<- and their Rage Comic section, I chose to make a comic using that to sort of reflect my personality and ended up with this:

Anyway, keep it lighthearted and don't worry about reaching every person out there. This method is good for people you would like to tell, but want to keep the details limited. For the more important people, tell 'em in person or in a more personal manner.

I approve. Shu approves, too. Well done!

A very dear friend I met while living in Japan shared that series with me after I came out to her. I left shortly after they released the 13th volume of the manga, so I'm a bit in the dark as to where the story has gone since.

Well, puberty, which sucks for pretty much anyone who's trans. High school, Shu's voice is dropping, apparently he shaves now, Takatsuki is going through a confused/experimental phase, which I'm predicting/hoping doesn't lead to a "I'm a girl after all" realization, I mean he's the only ftm in the story.

Ha, sorry about the derail :P mangafox updates it regularly, it's usually translated pretty quickly after release

I'm a huge fan of the Wandering Son as well!!! Gaah yeah!
Oh yes, I'm also going to make a comic like this. Great idea! :)

This is brilliant. I was just going to either delete it and be on my way, or maybe post a boring status message about it (which no one would read 'cause that's how it always goes with me). Thanks for posting this!

I was going to remove a bunch of tell-tale photos including my profile pic, change my name on my profile, then put the new pic up and see if anybody noticed. I like your idea better. Then I can pick and choose who I tell and it'll be like starting a new online life.

That is genius! I love it! I'm still a awhile away from that but I am so borrowing your idea when I do! I was just thinking of a massive fb friends cull and get rid of anyone that I havent spoken to in a year or two (ie. 90% of my "friends") and change all the details. Brilliant!! Much Kudos to you!

I really like this idea. I've been waffling around about how to do this. The only thing I fear, even with this method, is the social graph. Unless I locked the new account down really, really tightly I can see things leaking and getting outed faster than I intend.

I'm worried about the same thing. I'm probably just going to invite about 5 or 6 people to add my new one and just disappear to everyone else. I hardly have any real friends, anyway. I can cut off some not-so-nice family this way, too, because they won't be able to track down my new account. Cheers!
