Title: Care to show yourself without makeup?
Post by: tomthom on February 23, 2013, 05:11:16 PM
I'm just curious what some people are like on their days off. I realize this is a personal thing and by no means should you feel the necessity to post here.

I'll also confess, I'm an artist and seeing the innate changes the genetics have on one's outward appearance simply fascinate me. This is to the point where I constantly paint faces and repaint them with slightly different features to see what exactly pushes masculinity/androgyny/femininity.

I haven't actually started transition yet but I'll post my own pictures soon, just so people don't think I'm asking without giving :P (maybe a few paintings of myself after my planned procedures as well if I feel so inclined.)

Oh, I've thought about that. Unfortunately I can't draw :p

If I have some spare time and you send me some references/desire I could paint a rough of how certain alterations may look. Again though, I literally have school for at least 75 hours a week, so it my be a while before any fruit comes to bear.

Abysmal quality, I know. But I liked this thread and wanted to post in it.

I also almost never ever wear makeup, only time I wear makeup is if I'm on stage, which lately is never.

Such an awesome idea, kinda reminds me of my trashy mags - "Hollywood Celebs without makeup, omg!" except of coarse we are much more classy and beautiful than them  ;)

This is truly frightening for me as I don't even go buy milk without makeup.
These were taken this morning before I put my work face on.

hahah, trashy mags are always fun to take a jab at :P

I guess the reason I made this thread though was to one show people that most of them can pass just fine without makrup, and two I was curious as to what sort of results people were getting from hrt and body modifications because I want to reach a point where I don't need makeup. where I can just walk out and be gendered consistently as female.

I think this thread is a great idea and certainly it does give another perspective for people just starting or going through.

So far as passing without makeup, for me personally I have no idea if I do or don't because I have never left the house without it! Perhaps I will go buy some milk without one day, maybe....

actually emma, do you have a good picture I could use of your face? a head on or quarter view. I'm curious if I play with some non makeup features if I could get you to full passing in "boy mode"

preferably one with hair pulled back so the full bone structure of the forehead and occipital ridges are showing.

I'm an artist, so minor aesthetic changes are always mind bogglingly important and fun to play with for me.

hmm, that's not so easy for me anymore, I have no boy clothes left and I would have to painfully bind too.
That and I think if I had to dress as a boy again, I would probably do some serious amounts of sobbing, its been a while would be kinda weird now.
Guess I will just peer over the counter so they can only see my face when I go buy milk  ;)

Even if I'm trying, I don't pass as male anymore. And I've even tried. There's just so many features that say the opposite of boy. no adams apple, my voice, face... People think that the facial hair is because of some side effect of a shot I might have had.

Emma by looking at your picture you do look feminine already just wait until your hair grows out I doubt you'll be called young man then.

alright, here ya go. I added more hair to the back and to the front(front being a bit more obvious) and it's all very rough to give you an idea. I also did some color correction stuff just because I can't help it. but as you can see once your hair properly frames your face and forehead is more covered, it's extremely hard to see you as a boy

Joanna, I think you'll pass fine once you start. I image the edges of your chine will fill out quite nicely.

Thanks tomthom! I can't wait til my face rounds out, clears up, smooths out and gets a little "puffy" and soft.  I'm hoping against hope that possibly the tip of my nose shrinks. It used to be pretty delicate and then around  age 20 the tip took on a life of its own. Fracking testosterone, ew. I can pinch it though and it's all skin and fat so its possible estrogen counteracts that. But I'm not banking on it. I'm just tired of pretending to be a man.

I know I am.

It gets tough for me, as someone who is not particularly interested in makeup, to be confident in the idea that its "okay" for me to declare myself a woman and endeavor to be seen as one when I'm not "sticking to the script" (i.e. acting feminine, wearing makeup, etc.).  And I KNOW it's totally legitimate (that "the script" doesn't really exist) and we're not all the same just because we're all transwomen....but I have this brain thing all up in my business and it gives me sh*t like 24/7.

I'm a very tomboyish girl and it's hard to believe that I could ever been read as anything other than a feminine guy.

hahaha, I'm the same way, no worries. Although I do enjoy throwing in some dramatic flair, although I think that comes from hanging out in the art community more than anything else. I fully intend to be just as much of a gaming nerd with a slight domineering streak as a woman as I have been as a man. Can't wait until I get my first "fake gamer girl" abuse so I can rip them a new one.

A lot of cis women don't wear makeup. I don't because it's a lot of work and I don't think that defines me anyway. I do use several different facial care products  moisturizer, under eye care and chubby stick lip color occasionally from Clinique, facial cleanser and hair products from Aveda, but I can't see making up my face before stepping out the door each day as a validating thing for me. Perhaps I'm just plain lazy and prefer to present in androgynous mode anyway.

Well there's lots of girls around these days who are too lazy to wear makeup aside from special occasions, so that's not that weird if it's your thing, OTOH most girls actually are feminine, just makeup isn't always the way they express their femininity [. . . .]

And I'm not talking down about these things, I'm just saying, if we believe brain sex is what makes ya trans, it's only natural that most MAAB people whose brain sex dips into the female range don't dip that far, or maybe they don't even dip into the female range, just close enough to it that it causes gender confusion.

It seems as though you're implying a correlation between how far brain sex "dips into" the female range, and the degree to which a person participates in certain activities and behaviors typically associated with femininity. I dont agree with you.

This has really been at the core of a long struggle of questioning the validity of my belief that I am female, that I am trans, because I am not inclined to this set of behaviors and activities that are "Feminine."

Femininity and masculinity are arguably socially constructed (this is a view I subscribe to), and so I would argue that its entirely possible that my brain sex is completely,  unmistakably female. A combination of personal preferences and socialization accounts for my relative disinterest in traditionally feminine things.

I suppose I should have called out the distinction I implicitly wrote into my post about not "acting feminine" because I certainly didnt mean to imply that I dont feel like a woman, or even that I dont feel like I have feminine personality traits. I believe my brain sex is just as female as any person who embraces all society deems feminine.

Of course, its hard to say that I'm not just blowing smoke, as we really dont have a whole lot of a clue what actually accounts for the gendered human experience and the formation of gendered identity.

Everything is going fantastic today so I'll play along and post two.  Hope it works this time.

One from yesterday with a wig and just little makeup to cover a couple skin flaws.  And then a wide view with absolutely nothing from a few weeks ago.  Almost no difference.   :(

Oh sorry. Well you can disregard my post, I don't subscribe to that view personally.  I have just done too much research on those things to think it is entirely social.  But that is just me.

I totally agree. Girl You Look Fierce. I was brought up uber-male, sports, music (no violin I begged my mom but she would not let me), no girlish behavior allowed. Period. I even wanted to use the girl's bathroom in first grade and did with my friend. I got caught and kicked out. Never got in trouble though cause of it. Yet, when I became a witch and started playing with Tarot cards, which is arguably femme behavior, they tried to stop that too. Of course, I was 15 and I did it anyway. Luckily, becaue I told my feinds to I was a witch, they all accepted it and we were a tight knit group. One kids had a problem with it but he was a dick and a total creep. And then there is that guy who had his penis latched off during a botched circumcision and he got a sex change and lived as a female for his whole life. Yet, he said he was a boy at a young age, wanted to wear male clothes, acted like a boy, and eventually wanted a sex change. So, even though he was raised as a girl, his brain still identified as a male, all with no penis. BTW, he killed himself. So, to say it is socially-constructed is invalidated by this. It also is extremely validating to me and anyone else who has such a horrible time adapting as a man. It's in my brain, biological (my body is pretty female: small hands, size 8 in women's, narrow shoulders, small boobs, though face wise i look male, i think.) and IMO it unchangeable.

And the other side would say you're describing gender ID, not masculinity and femininity.

I don't think the world as a whole is ready to accept that some girls act like boys, and some boys act like girls. If I passed 1 gazillion percent, I think I would still get looked at a lil weird by the general population if I said not only do I like Nascar (I don't), but I want to play football, drink beer with the guys, burp loud, laugh at fart jokes, on and on.

Now, for those who do consider themselves masculine: do your thang... I love you for you. However, I think if you expect the rest of the world to take you seriously as a female, ESPECIALLY if you don't pass extremely well, you're setting yourself up to be disappointed. People may humor you but in my personal experience, that is the stereotype of what people almost expect from trans women. I've been told by family that they thought it'd be harder to be around me in public until they saw how feminine I really am. I have a friend that, when hearing she was meeting a trans girl (me), she was expecting something different... something more manly. She told me she had no clue I was even trans even though she was expecting to meet a trans girl that day.

I think it kinda sucks for those of us who are on the masculine side and are proud to be masculine, but yeah... gender is a construct that can work in our favor or against it. But at the end if you want to be happy you have to do what makes you happy.

Be yourself because everybody else is taken :)

About masculinity and femininity... since I went fulltime I haven't changed my tastes, manners, etc... only the way I dress and of course now I wear makeup  ;D

Well, the people who only knows me as a girl thinks I'm girly, while the people who knows me as a boy usually says that I was 100% manly.

I think people use your current presentation as the startup point to build their impression about you.

I certainly meant it as nothing less than flattering - I suppose the term "classic" might be a bit fluid, but to me it conjures up finely shaped features that might be considered a bit aristocratic - or of distinct lineage.

Regardless of how I might botch what I'm trying to say, "Stunning" needs no clarification.   :)

Well I've been waiting to post in this thread for a while. I think I finally feel comfortable doing this.

Taken about a week ago

It's weird, the camera has a way of making the hairline look higher than it looks in person. I frequently wear my hair back like this when I'm in a "get stuff done" mode.

Jenny, honestly, I've seen the pictures you posted from a couple of years ago (scruffy beard and glasses), and you are very much a different person.  Even without the trappings of femininity (makeup, jewelry, etc), you look very much like any other 20-something girl.

Awww thank you Jamie :) That really means a lot to me! I think especially so because I do slightly still feel a little exposed without any eye makeup at the very least.

I did finally get to the point of seeing myself as a girl this way in the mirror. In photos it is a little bit of a different story... but I am getting there.

That really helps :) Thanks

Well, my avatar doesn't, and neither does this:

Little bit of brightening filter, yes, but it's not significant.

My avatar is without makeup on.   It was taken about a week ago after work, right at the two month mark (4 months total but not really counting the first two as they were pretty much spiro only).

Another thread for vanity?

As getting old, I become less confident in my face. The most unfeminine feature in my body is face. After praising the beauty of my body, my friends sigh at my face. For this, I once wanted HRT, but I gave up. Mostly I am without makeup except some sun creams.

Without makeup or plucking eyebrows.

True, you're forehead is high, but isn't that what wigs are for?

Rowan,

Deeply in my mind, I wanted some feminization through HRT, but the physician, who had conducted SRS more than 200 times, refused my request, although I got an approval letter from a psychiatrist. He said he will do if I come again with my wife. After that, I thought again about my motivation and the future my 3 kids and wife. Finally, I gave up HRT.

I'm sorry to hear that.  I have no idea how things work in your country but I can't imagine how difficult it would be to deal with that lack of support from a doctor who is meant to be treating you.  I take it your wife isn't supportive of you transitioning then?

Today at the clinic for my feets, I think I have an infection or something, gross.
But yep, no makeup and a hint of facial hair shadow. Still haven't gotten laser.
I passed though, a fellow short haired girl commented she loved my hair :P

I realize I look like poop, I'm not trying to say I look good w out makeup because I know I definitely don't haha. Just saying i don't need it to pass, which is great.

Celestica,

You have a very fair face, which I envy. And you trimmed well your eye brows.

And I guess you missed orthodontic treatment like my son. My son liked soft food too much and did not chew enough solid food when he was a toddler. At his teens, he gave up wearing the orthodontic case.

Looking good Kelly, I like the way you have your hair styled and the color is good and works well with your skin tone! Have you cleared all of your facial hair, or is that just the lighting in the photo that gives off the slight shadow?

Removing the face rodent is one of the few remaining things on my list.. I just haven't had the money. It was also not the best of shaves...

The only part that is masculine in my appearance is my face. I could hide it by long hair, but now I need to wear eye makeup as I hair becomes short. Most young ladies here wear eye makeup, and they have fooled me. I realized that, without makeup, their faces are as plain as mine!

Although to be fair the only makeup I wear is foundation to cover some of the blotchy scars on my face,(barely visible this morning amazingly) and occasionally concealer my very obvious raccoon eyes, I'm a kid at heart and I stay up all night playing computer games/watching movies, and I pay for it lol.

Oriah, you look fantastic w/o makeup! I can't imagine how beautiful you are with it. By the way, I love to wear makeup, and if all I had to impress were chickens and goats, I'd wear it for them, lol! You should go down to some s**tkicker farmer bar on Main Street, shoot some pool and drive those boys out of their minds there. And if there's no bar, hang out at the feed store and nurse a Dr. Pepper and drive 'em crazy there. I lived in a little logging town in Washington of 1800 souls and I was the best looking girl there. The irony was I was still in male impersonator mode. The guy to girl ratio had to be 5 to 1, and some of the 'ladies' there had too much time on their hands and too many Rainier and 'Animal Beers' and shots of Jack Daniels around their tummies (bellies). But even though the loggers all wore suspenders, cork boots and beards, some of them were really cute, sweet, and in incredibly good shape. You would drive the tractor boys crazy, girl, and I'm sure some of them are cute and sweet like the loggers were!!! You really are a gorgeous, gorgeous young woman. Hugs, Mira

I don't know...I just find all of the "girlie" stuff to be really boring. I was all excited about it when I started my transition but then I realized it just wasn't me.

ah right on, I was always into it before transition, but never really indulged too hard into make up.  nail polish though? but ya I didn't overtly masculine activities to try to "fit in" as a male so to speak, like work on cars, take my jeep mudding, and play video games pretty religiously.  Ironically, those things seem boring to me now, but that is because they were "blend in" attempts if you will.

Having known women that could fix their own car and also played video games, I never saw those two things as being very masculine. The former was due to people being sick and tired of having to depend on those whom were undependable and the latter was just something to do.

Well, I agree.  Like I said its something I lost myself in to "try" to appear male.  Never worked out so well lol. The whole video game thing inherently was a double edged sword, it put me into some kind of fantasy realm when I wasn't working, so I did not have to face how I felt, in an attempt to thinking it was better for me since it was what was wanted of me; if that makes sence. I know plenty of female friends that can do either, and very well.  One of my best friends who passed away was a mechanic, and why this amtters or not, a lesbian, and a best friend on many many many levels. I learned how to work on cars to a certain limited extent from her.  I would just overtly seek out what is generally on the masculine spectrum as a "cover my identity" type thing. :/ hope that clarifies.

anyhow, if you want to talk further on it, feel free to pm me doll :) that way we aren't pulling from the main topic and all :p

Monica, it's always amazing how a little makeup and a close shave will put you right over the top as a foxy looking woman. You have beautiful eyes sans makeup though. Get a good workout girl!

Thanks Shantel.  I've seen the difference lately on how I look as a boy.  It has to confuse the heck out of people.

My eyelashes are basically invisible without mascara because of being blonde but I have cleverly obscured them with my glasses.  It's not cheating!

I think this is one of the best threads i've browsed through in my time on this site (and oh, it's been a while). I think far too many of us hide ourselves away behind a mask of clothes and makeup. I think it's important for people to see that it's not smoke and mirrors, but that you don't really need makeup a lot of the time. We look at all the things we can do to "help us pass" but what is really needed? Surely FFS is an option for many people, but I think far too many consider things like FFS, or BA that they don't actually need. And in this case, many of you don't need makeup to pass, you're all beautiful people. We are our own worse enemy.

Without makeup I look uglier, but I realized that it is the same for most young women here, or worse.
I think 99% of beauty most women at their 20s or 30s in my country seemingly possess is produced by makeup or cosmetic surgery.

A Chinese newspaper published the following photo titled "After and before-makeup photos of some candidates of Miss Korea 2013.

(https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpostfiles13.naver.net%2F20130626_220%2F2ch1999_1372235427924Pz6rW_JPEG%2Fhu_1372235278_742643261.jpeg%3Ftype%3Dw1&hash=76933906722981d75efa41dd6a08808a9ef883f3)

Also more photos at: http://blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?blogId=tmdwls0418&logNo=80189210776&redirect=Dlog&widgetTypeCall=true (http://blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?blogId=tmdwls0418&logNo=80189210776&redirect=Dlog&widgetTypeCall=true)

I was once enthralled by a young woman at night, asking her to meet the next day to have some tea. She did not wear any makeup when we met the next day at lunch time, and I was surprised that her face was as plain as mine, or I am probably prettier than her  ;D

Anyway, wearing makeup is funny and enjoyable.

And Miss Rebel, I'm going to say that you too look amazing with pink hair!

It's a color that screams femininity.  It's like telling everyone that you just don't care, that you're who you are, and that they can just suck it up or go home.

Awesome.  There should be a "Me With Pink Hair" sticky thread on this site.  I can't wait until I can go pink.  My hair is thinning so it'll be a wig, but my god, they're pretty!

That pink was about the only crazy colour I'd never done.. Blue, green, red, yellow, purple, orange, all sorts of shades I'd done, but not pink.. I never did pink before transition because I thought it might give me away..  And then one day last year, I went, to hell with it, I want pink hair.. I only kept it pink for a week.. Next colour on the list is purple - not sure whether to go for a dark or light shade yet though. Got to wait until after my Mother of the Bride gig on the 26th though - I think I'm going to raise enough eyebrows as it is..

Hear hear!

My experience (after a year and a half on HRT):
When I don't wear makeup, half of those who flirt with me are women who like women, half are men.
When I do wear makeup, almost all who flirt with me are men.

Before HRT had its effects, I needed some makeup to attract any attention, so YMMV.

So that's why now I only wear makeup if I've just had a facial or electrolysis to cover up the red, or if I'm going to be photographed/videographed to even my speckled complexion, or I really want to attract straight guys - who are conditioned to expect, and be attracted to, non-natural facial coloration particularly of the lips and eyes.

Thanks barbie! I don't know if it was the estrogen or the retin a + SPF, or the combo of everything.. but I can't even compare the skin texture of my forehead to what it was 10 months ago. Pores have filled in all over my face and I don't think I've felt this good about my skin in a long long time.

Also keep in mind the photo is fairly low light so it's hard to really compare the two all that much

So, this is the absolutely natural and no makeup me - this morning, still in bed, not even washed my face yet :D

I'm probly speaking for more than myself when i say I really would love to post pics here for this community to see.. But that would also mean the rest of the internet can see them just as easily through a google search or something so simple. Wish there was a private way to post like this.

Yes. Everybody should eventually pass that stage. It was the same to me, but I overcame it.

Me early in the morning without makeup, and and also without face washing  ;D I purchased the red dress for this fall, but suddenly it became chilly to wear it.

Without makeup? Well, I guess people should see what I normally look like. I get to choose the picture that I like the most though. The others have been um.... mysteriously lost. Yeah...  :-X

This is me a few weeks ago waking up in a good mood without makeup and my hair in a ponytail. It was on a weekend since I didn't have dark circles under my eyes, LOL.

Sorry for the bump, not sure if there is a new version of this, couldn't find one. Took these after plucking my eyebrows and filling them in:

I haven't started HRT, I've just been growing my hair out. I don't use makeup, as my Mom is somewhat of a tomboy and I don't know what makeup I'd buy anyways.
